Alma de Casa Monastrell Cabernet, '12.

Gorgeous fruit front wine, that beautiful blueberry and plum taste first up before a more typical cabernet ending due to the blend. Love it.

Avon Brae Eden Valley Shiraz, '12.

The first wine I ever really 'loved' was Zeppelin's Amelie; an '09 Eden Valley single vineyard wine. This Avon Brae took me back there; huge front load of blackberry and black currant flavours almost to the point of being sweet before the fruit falls off after an initial burst to be spicy, peppery and a hint of chocolate. The colour was also superb; more ruby or 'red' rather than dark purple.

A wine I am glad I have another 5 bottles of.

2011 Clonakilla Hilltops Shiraz

Look, I bought a bottle despite the nightmare vintage because I thought it might improve (and becuase for the first time since 2006 I didn't buy the shiraz-viognier). It did, a bit. I'm glad I bought it, but I'm also glad I only bought 1. Still very jarring in its acidity and without much fruit to carry it, but it still manages elegance and freshness. It's nice, but Clonakilla for me is always better than just nice

Had a moment of weakness yesterday afternoon/evening. I purchased a couple of bottles of 2008 Philip Shaw No.89 Shiraz a few years ago, always intended on keeping them for a bit longer. Thoroughly enjoyable, classic cool climate Shiraz. Vanilla, pepper, cherry & plum. Loved every single drop. If you get the chance to enjoy a bottle, don't knock it back.

Teusner The Dog Strangler, 2012.

Everytime I drink this, I love it. Blueberry, earthy, vanilla, slightly savoury and very long - it really is one, if not my very favourite, grape varietal. Just gorgeous. Only issue is the 14.5%, which as usual has me very merry...

Still, its my birthday tomorrow so why not

Nailed a bottle of 2009 Mt Langi Cliff Edge Shiraz. Just getting better and better, beautiful fruit, rich but elegant, classy Victorian Shiraz.

Now I'm very glad tomorrow is public holiday

Cliff Edge or Dog Strangler?

Cliff Edge is the vineyard the fruit comes off. The Dog Strangler refers to one of the anecdotes in France about Mataro...winemakers say the skin of the grapes is thick enough to choke a dog.

Thanks Johnsy :)

Had a Brand's Laira Tall Vines Shiraz, 2010 today. Lovely soft cherry, plum and blueberry forefront followed by spice, pepper and a gentle vanilla flavour from the oak afterwards.

I also drink too much, I think...

Not a bad wine, value for the price IMO.
