Souths star linked to Eels move: Wing falls silent, Rabbitohs are hopping mad
June 12, 2009
SOUTH SYDNEY utility player Craig Wing has refused to comment on reports linking him to NRL rivals Parramatta.
The Rabbitohs were forced to release a statement yesterday denying they had given Wing permission to talk to other NRL clubs after several media reports linked the 29-year-old with a move to the Eels.
Wing, who is contracted to South Sydney until the end of 2011, was reportedly left $150,000 out of pocket when his third-party deal with a real estate agency broke down. But the NSW Origin star remained tight-lipped when asked about the possibility of a move away from the Rabbitohs.
"There's been talk about everything for the last eight months," Wing said in Perth yesterday ahead of tomorrow's clash with Melbourne Storm.
"I've got nothing to say about it and nothing to do with it. People can write whatever they want."
But the Rabbitohs made it clear Wing would face a battle if he wanted to leave the club before his contract expired.
"[The] Rabbitohs have not given Craig Wing or management permission to negotiate with other NRL clubs," South Sydney said in a statement.
"Wing is contracted to the South Sydney Rabbitohs for the next two seasons, and the club wants Craig to honour that contract."
Wing has also been linked to a move to a former club, the Sydney Roosters, as well as a possible switch to English Super League club Bradford but denied those reports on Wednesday.
Wing was more forthcoming when asked about the Rabbitohs' must-win clash with Melbourne in Perth.
South Sydney are three points adrift of the top-eight and desperate to atone for last week's 46-12 loss to North Queensland.
"It's a big game. We've had a couple of losses and we are coming up against a really good team in the Storm, so it's going to be a tough day in the office for us," Wing said. "I think our defence is letting us down a little bit and our control of the ball.
"Looking at the stats over the last few games, other teams have spent more time in our half than we have in theirs, and the other team have had more ball, and as a result they end up with all the momentum and invariably end up with the points.
"It's not rocket science," Wing added. "We need more con-centration from our players."
