Wing in Parramatta's sights

I along with Peter Sterling, Phill Gould, Wally Lewis, etc, have all played alot of footy. They seem to think he is a (in Gus' word) super player.

And just because he had a blunder in the in goal, dosent make him any less of a player. Your sound like HJ with Jarryd Hayne, ignoring the positives and focusing on the negatives.

I think we wouldnt have been happy about Gidley possibly coming here because we already have 2 fullbacks. Hayne and Burt.

Come on, now - at that stage Hayne wasn't really playing fullback on that regular a basis and Luke Burt...Well, most posters here would sell their own livers to see him not don a blue and gold jersey ever again, so he was hardly ever going to realistically keep Kurt out of the fullback spot if he joined.

There is a difference between a 'super' player and a 'great' player. I agree that he is a super player. But not a great player.

In my opinion, Jamie Soward is a super player, but Jonathan Thurston is a great player. Trent Barrett is a super player, but Darren Lockyer is a great player.

As for the blunder, I've explained it a few times - to me, it points to a lack of natural feel. I can't help but feel that your Wade McKinnons, your Billy Slaters, your Brett Stewarts, etc. wouldn't have made that elementary blunder because they are natural fullbacks.

And a natural five eight has a strong kicking game and usually good last tackle options. Gidley lacks those qualities. Do you think Gidley should be playing five eight for NSW? Because last year Qld picked one of your "great" players, cutie, to play five eight and that was a complete failure.

Hunt is a great player - at fullback.

I'm not sure where I'd play Gidley, but I think there are better, more rounded out options for fullback. And I am positive, had he been available, that Brett Stewart would have been fullback for Origin I anyway.

Maybe as a 14...But then Wing would miss out.

It's a tough choice. If you go for youth, Gidley would beat out Wing.

But why does he even have to be in the team to begin with? Nathan Hindmarsh isn't. Glenn Morrison wasn't, and when he was in the NRL he was one of the best back-rowers around.

Also, let's not forget that Gus and Sterlo also rate Brett Finch as a 'super player'.

Also, these days your average 5/8 is just basically another ball-playing lock, anyway. The days of your Brett Kennys and Cliffy Lyons are over. Now it's all Shaun Timmins and John Suttons and Feleti Mateos and Terry Campeses.

They clearly admired the things that he did, not condemed him for the mistakes he made. Finch did alot of those 1% things, but he cant handle preasure, thats why he often failed.

Back to Gidley. I agree with the Hayne at fullback for Origin 2, but I cant put the captain of our Origin side on the bench. Now that Bailey is out, the only two who could take over as captain is Gallen (please no) and Farah who isnt experienced at Origin yet.

I like Finch, because he's passionate and gutsy. But a 'super' player he ain't, in my honest opinion I'm just pointing out that some people can have a good eye and a bad eye for talent at the same time.

I think Gidley's biggest problem is much the same as John Morris's - they're utility players, so they can play well in any number of positions but not well enough to make it a matter of black and white.

I mean Stewart is probably a better all round fullback than Gidley. Campese (or Mullen) is probably a better all round 5/8. But Gidley brings a lot to the table and you have to find a place for him. The problem is it comes at the expense of someone else. But because he's so versatile he can do it all and his specifics aren't as good as others'.

As for Gallen, if he plays for NSW again it will be a joke of epic proportions. Sure, he's aggressive. He's also scum.

Actually, Kite could probably captain NSW. I don't particularly like him, but he's won a Premiership recently and he's played for NSW and Australia for a while now. He's experienced.

kidley just proves that the pidgeon holes of positions in modern league are gone. although i agree he isn't the best talent wise overall at 1 or 6 compared to others, where he surpasses all of them is workload, attitude and the knack of being able to inject himself into EVERY game. he rarely has a bad game regardless where he playes, well at least FAR less than stewart at 1 (as origin proved) and campese and mullen (as origin proved)

Souths star linked to Eels move: Wing falls silent, Rabbitohs are hopping mad

June 12, 2009

SOUTH SYDNEY utility player Craig Wing has refused to comment on reports linking him to NRL rivals Parramatta.
The Rabbitohs were forced to release a statement yesterday denying they had given Wing permission to talk to other NRL clubs after several media reports linked the 29-year-old with a move to the Eels.
Wing, who is contracted to South Sydney until the end of 2011, was reportedly left $150,000 out of pocket when his third-party deal with a real estate agency broke down. But the NSW Origin star remained tight-lipped when asked about the possibility of a move away from the Rabbitohs.
"There's been talk about everything for the last eight months," Wing said in Perth yesterday ahead of tomorrow's clash with Melbourne Storm.
"I've got nothing to say about it and nothing to do with it. People can write whatever they want."
But the Rabbitohs made it clear Wing would face a battle if he wanted to leave the club before his contract expired.
"[The] Rabbitohs have not given Craig Wing or management permission to negotiate with other NRL clubs," South Sydney said in a statement.
"Wing is contracted to the South Sydney Rabbitohs for the next two seasons, and the club wants Craig to honour that contract."
Wing has also been linked to a move to a former club, the Sydney Roosters, as well as a possible switch to English Super League club Bradford but denied those reports on Wednesday.
Wing was more forthcoming when asked about the Rabbitohs' must-win clash with Melbourne in Perth.
South Sydney are three points adrift of the top-eight and desperate to atone for last week's 46-12 loss to North Queensland.
"It's a big game. We've had a couple of losses and we are coming up against a really good team in the Storm, so it's going to be a tough day in the office for us," Wing said. "I think our defence is letting us down a little bit and our control of the ball.
"Looking at the stats over the last few games, other teams have spent more time in our half than we have in theirs, and the other team have had more ball, and as a result they end up with all the momentum and invariably end up with the points.
"It's not rocket science," Wing added. "We need more con-centration from our players."

hodges made those diabolical mistakes in the ingoal in origin and despite being a goose is still probably a great a player. i believe hayne would make a better fullback for origin for his support up the middle of the ruck. on the wing he has to wait for the ball to come. and on topic i'm over this wing crap. he supports a player and scores a try in origin and suddenly he's one of the best on the field. give me strength

Stewart played well in Origin, I thought. And Campo was quiet, but solid.

Interesting...

Hayne, too, made a mistake by throwing the ball wildly behind him for Lockyer to pounce on it and score. But both he and Hodges have an aura of greatness about them.

On topic, it seems like this 'HUGE' name, if it ever even was there to begin with, was never Craig Wing at all.

The fact that Wing refuses to comment on specualtion that he is linked to Parramatta makes me think their may be something in the pipeline. Why wouldn't he just come out and refute it if he wasn't negoiating something? It looks like the biggest hurdle is overcoming a mutual severence between the bunnies and Craig Wing. We might be in business..

Wing would add a great deal to the side, he can play in the halves or at hooker. And he could play play Lock at a pinch. He has won a GF and played in winning Origin series. Lets face it we had Finch here on 300k anyone else is a bargain.

I`m not keen on Wing. Although he`s a better player than Finch, his career mirrors Finch`s in a lot of ways. He`s a player who has never really settled into one position - he`s not a specialist anything. He`s had injuries (and I`m not counting the one where the Easts player nearly ripped his arm off). And he would command a lot of money. And I think there are better half-backs and five-eights out there. I don`t think we need another hooker, and we definitely don`t need another lock. I wouldn`t sign him.
