Played well, some solid hits and rolled his sleeves up and did the hard work. Also great effort to hold up Tedesco. Some good cover defence, in rounding up Tedesco. Not bad with the ball in hand, scored a simple try. Missed a bomb under heavy pressure. All in all a solid performance and a much better winger than Rav.

Should be in the starting team next week. Can we please play Robson on the bench now?

Lomax a step closer to playing alongside big brother

Boom Dragons rookie Zac Lomax has taken a step towards fulfilling his dream of playing NRL alongside brother Hayden after securing the right centre berth for Sunday’s match against Parramatta at Bankwest Stadium.

It is the first time Lomax has been named at centre when Euan Aitken was fully fit and follows his impressive performance on the wing in last week’s 20-10 loss to the Sydney Roosters after playing three previous matches in the bench utility role.

Lomax’s goal-kicking has helped him force his way into the starting team in the absence of injured captain Gareth Widdop and he started on the wing in place of Mikaele Ravawale against the Roosters.

However, team-mates marvel at the confidence and composure he has shown in matches, including putting his hand up to kick the match-winning field goal against Brisbane.

The 19-year-old Junior Kangaroos star has been widely tipped for a long future in the NRL and he hopes to eventually get the opportunity to play alongside Hayden, who was the first of the brothers recruited by the Dragons and is one of the club’s six development players.

“The Dragons picked Hayden up first when he was 13 and I was his brother so they saw me the year after and then they sort of signed us both,” Lomax said.

Hayden, who plays in the forwards, is recovering from a knee injury but is also held in high regard by St George Illawarra officials after winning the club’s 2016 SG Ball player of the year award and playing 35 matches in Under 20s over the past two years.

The brothers played most of their junior league together for Temora Dragons and were also team-mates with the Thirroul Butchers after moving to Wollongong when Zac was in Year 10 at high school.

“I was playing Harold Mats (U16s) and Hayden was playing the bottom age of SG Ball (U18s), and then we went and played for the Butchers,” Lomax said.

“Me and Haydo played Under 18s together there and we played a little bit of first grade together in our second year so that was good.

“It’s been our goal forever to play NRL together, we have spoken about it for a while now and hopefully that will happen in the future. Hayden has had a bit of a knee injury but he had a really good pre-season.

“Obviously that day would be unbelievable if it come so I have got to keep playing consistent footy and when Hayden is ready to go I am confident he is going to put in a few good performances.”

Try of the week: Round 7

Confidence is an attribute that Lomax does not lack and those in Illawarra rugby league circles still talk about the day he made his first grade debut as a skinny 16-year-old and walked on to the field with the ball in the assumption he would take the kick-off.

He displayed the same confidence when thrust into action in the 74th minute of the Round 3 match against Brisbane after Widdop had injured his shoulder and Broncos captain Darius Boyd scored to level the scores at 24-24.

Forced to fill in at fullback, Lomax safely defused several high kicks and team-mates said he got himself into position on the opposite side of the ruck to five-eighth Corey Norman and volunteered to take a shot at field goal on the last tackle of the match.

Hooker Cameron McInnes passed to Norman and he kicked the field goal to win the match 25-24 but Lomax said he would have no hesitation putting his hand up for the job again.

“Normy has been hitting them unbelievable so I think from here on in he is going to be the No.1 field goal taker but if that situation does come around I’d be comfortable to be able to do that,” Lomax said.

“You practice that sort of stuff and when you get your chance you don’t want to be a fish out of water. Whatever situation you are chucked into you have got to be ready to go and do what is best for the team. You have just got to back your ability and be confident in yourself.

“I am confident in myself because of the team-mates I have got around me. They make me extra confident and they bring the best out in you because of the faith we have in each other.”

Lomax will start at right centre against the Eels, with Ravalawa recalled to the wing and Aitken selected on the interchange.

Dragons 2019: Lomax out to make starting spot his own in Eels showdown

BIG CHANCE: Dragons centre Zac Lomax plans on locking down a permanent starting spot. Picture: NRL Imagery

HE'S made no secret of his desire to lock down a permanent starting spot but Dragons young-gun Zac Lomax insists he was never left disgruntled by his time on the bench this season.

Dubbed 'the gifted one' by NSW coach Brad Fittler, Lomax made his NRL debut from the bench in round 10 last season before playing his side's final three games at right centre after Euan Aitken succumbed to a hamstring injury.

It saw him finish the season with four first grade appearances to his name, two of them in the finals arena, as the Dragons reached the second week of the post-season.

He never looked out of place in the top grade but still returned for preseason behind Aitken and Tim Lafai in the pecking order, with his first four appearances of 2019 coming from the bench in a utility role.

It left plenty to question whether he was being under-utilised by coach Paul McGregor's, but Lomax said it was role he embraced.

"It's been really good. I've really enjoyed playing different positions and understanding the game from a different perspective," Lomax said.

"To be thrown in in different circumstances during the game has been an eye-opener but I've enjoyed every second I've been on the field.

"It's been a massive learning curve being chucked into the middle there and at crucial points in the game too. I've been put in there due to injuries, coming on there at the end of games.

"We won a couple by a field goal by Normy at the end and it was good to be a part of. It's definitely something I've taken a lot out of."

He was promoted to the starting 13 on the right wing for last week's Anzac Day clash, grabbing a second-half try and a goal in a tough 20-10 defeat to the Roosters.

It prompted a selection shift from McGregor ahead of Sunday's match against Parramatta, with Aitken benched to make way for Lomax on the right edge. Lomax plans to make it the first step in locking down the No. 3 jumper fulltime.

"Obviously [starting's] a good feeling, it's what I've hoped for," Lomax said.

"I feel for Euan but, at the end of the day, it's up to Mary [coach Paul McGregor] and what he sees is best for the team.

"Euay and Laf are unbelievable players. I've been sitting behind them for a while. I think the best way you can go about it is to be a sponge and just soak up as much as you can from them.

"I just had to bide my time and do a role for the team. Mary wanted me to come off the bench and to just be ready to go whenever. I was happy to do that.

"I just had to prepare the best I could for all those weeks and [this week] I'll still just be doing my job for the team. Hopefully I can go out there and do that on Sunday we come away with the win as well."

Sunday's clash sets up a showdown with Test and Origin veteran Michael Jennings, though Lomax won't be over-awed after being thrown in the finals deep end last season.

"I can take a lot of confidence out of that but you wouldn't be in this situation if you coaching staff and teammates didn't have confidence in you," he said.

"As soon as I go out on the park I know my teammates have got faith in me. I'm confident I can do a job for the team and I'm more than confident the guys beside me are going to help me every minute of the game."

Not a real good first hit out at his preferred position. Missed a couple of key tackles and gave away some stupid penalties. Happy to give him more chances, but he's going to have play much better than he did today.

Yeah not a great game, a bit of a mixed bag. Although it’s not his first hit out at center, he played a few there last year. Not the only one today though. Have a bit of faith in him and he’ll be fine. I reckon he tried to do a bit too much.

I guess my concern is that we are saying he is better defensively than Aitken, today didn't prove that at all.

You are right, he wasn't the only one, but some of the attempted tackles from him were pretty poor. As I said, happy to give him more opportunities to see if he picks up. If his defence doesn't get better, we don't have anyone else to slot in there.

Just a symptom of trying too hard as he knows the "lovechild" will be hard to displace...Defensively much better then Aitken and Great goal kicker....

I'm not convinced. There were a couple of arm/jersey grabs today that were extremely poor. It's OK to bag Dufty's defence but not Lomax because he's the golden child? Come on, be realistic - he was as bad as Aitken today.

Respectfully Disagree...Lomax had Lane running at him..and coped well

also Aitken has been a regular first grader for over 4 years and makes the same mistakes and you are comparing it to Lomax who has played less than 8 1st grade games...

come on..compare apples with apples...

He coped well? He arm grabbed the winger twice which saw him score both times. And I'm not talking about how long each of them have been playing first grade - I said that Lomax was as bad as Aitken today. He even tried to score himself when the winger was open.

Like I said, I'm happy for him continue in the position, but he's going to have to perform much better than that if he wants to stay in the team.
