Zac Lomax

I think Lomax will back himself to make first grade.

He will persevere for another 18 months.

Robson is a different cookie.

He hasn’t been prepared to sign a long contract up to now.

If Mary stays, I see Reece leaving at season’s end. Can’t keep them all, but 20 minutes per game would certainly see Cam McInnes is not fatigued by SOO.

Heard on radio and haven't read it but there is an article on Zac visiting a seriously ill young man in hospital .
Zac went to see him and it made the young boy very happy.
Very sad to hear the young man passed away.
Well done to Zac and the dragons for a least bringing a bit of joy for the boy and his family .

I hope when Lomax gets his next crack at first grade he really dominates and shows he's a future star.
Look at Nick Cotric. He burst onto the scene at 19 and just dominated. He's big strong and fast.
I don't want to be negative here but I don't see Lomax in the same league as Cotric from what I've seen so far.
Cotric is only 10 months older.
I know people will say Cotric was given a shot thats why he's doing so well and Lomax is being blocked by Mary but Lomax has played a few games now of NRL and overall has been average.
When I saw Cotric play first time I knew he was a star. Lomax I see potential but I am not sure he'll make it.

Lomax will be better than Cotric. He handled Inglis last year in the final and also played well against Brisbane.
His only problem is McGregor keeps putting him on the wing. He deinately is not a winger. His footwork and ball skills are really good.

Footwork and ball skills are not enough. Speed and power is needed.
My money is on Cotric.

I'd say that if we knew the playing instructions Lomax has been restricted too, you would have your answer. The words came from the mouth of Lomax himself. Words to the effect of 'no fancy stuff, just run straight and hard and get to a quick play the ball'.

Dumbing down bright young talent with a good football brain is one of Mary's well know traits. How do you really expect Lomax to progress or shine under such instructions. And we all know what happens if you do not adhere to Mary's instructions!

You say "overall he has been average in his 1st grade appearances" are you referring to when he came into the side last year or in the trials this year or both?
If you think he was average last year then best you go back and have a look at his contribution in both attack and defence and take into consideration the pressure on him to perform at a time we were in free fall.
If it only refers to this year then tell me who did outstandingly well in our "illustrious" trials a they are truly shambolic affairs and for the greater part he was playing well and truly out of position.
No doubt Cotric is a very fine player but considering the number of games he has now played he also has had some bog average games and that is to be expected as they begin their journey which will be 10 or 12 years if they remain injury free.
FMD who would have thought B Moz would turn out as good as he did from the bumble fingered oaf that 1st came into grade.
Lomax has untapped potential and is very ice cool and clear thinking in tight situations which others his age are not.

This is a good discussion.

I understand Crush’s concerns. Zac is very talented and proved he can handle 1st grade last year. He has a good step and defended very well last year. My concern is a lack of genuine speed and tackle breaking power.

He has been called the ‘gifted one’ I think by Freddie Fitler but I don’t see it. He will not get quicker because that is mostly locked up in the genes given by parents. He may fill out naturally as did Matt Cooper and get stronger. His goal kicking ability appears very strong and will help recommend him over time.

This young guy can play for sure. I think that lack of higher end speed which Cooper and Gaznier processed is the issue. Also speed is power.

Give me a break.
Always Mary's fault....

Yes, when I said on average I meant across all games he has been selected in the top grade including last year and this years trials.
B Moz always had blistering pace to go with his big, although wirely, frame.
Lomax appears to be a good footy player with smarts and great footwork but a question mark over his ability to be a weapon like the top centres are with combined speed, footwork and power.
I'm not bagging him btw, just a discussion point.

Lomax showed his real self in the two finals games last season. Under pressure and without first grade experience for most of the year, he shined in defence and attack.

Then early this year he came out in a media report repeating the dumbing down instructions from Mary. Tell me how is he to look brilliant without contravening Mary's instructions.

If you separate the NRL games V the trials surely you must agree his efforts in real games as a centre have been more than useful and certainly not average.
The trials have confused the issue due to his disappointment of not being a starting centre and being forced to play an unnatural position.
Lomax regardless of his top end speed has the ability to make breaks and set players up so what he needs (not unlike Lafai) is a winger outside him with the top end speed that gets tries as a result of the centres work.
TBH Lafai would look very much better if he had a speedster outside him as well.
Everyone wants to bring Gasnier & Cooper into the conversation but they had the benefit of real power and speed (NIghty not that slow when younger) outside them which made them even more potent as a centre combination.
With Lomax's skill set there isn't a top winger that wouldn't benefit playing outside him and Lomax will score more than his fair share of tries based on that skill set.

Lets see how he goes OT.
I have no doubt he'll be a decent centre but will he be a top line centre?
Latrell, Roberts, Chambers. Will his name be up there with these guys in a couple of years? I hope so.

I believe whats between his ears in terms of maturity and composure as well as signs he has some class others can never attain makes up for his lack of top end speed, he can search out a quick support, weve seen him do that already with Dufty last year. Play him and we wont be disappointed.

I agree and hopefully we have lots of good times discussing how good Zac becomes.
Roberts and Chambers both have plenty of deficiencies in their games and Mitchell hopefully will mature further as he still has brain explosions which is something Zac doesn't appear to do.

Zac’s problem isn’t about becoming -
as both he & Reece have already won top shelf player awards, and in Zac’s case proven himself in front of 40,000 fans in the pressure cooker of 2 semifinals

No, his problem is in overcoming .... overcoming Waterboy’s dumbing him down & now lowering his expectations to that of supersub, which is the poison chalice & kiss of death at our Club

How long this fraud of selecting Turnstile over Zac continues for depends on how long it takes Zac’s management & family to realise they’re being sold a lemon - and react:

....after realising Waterboy will not move his flawed Lovechild from #3 (with both hitting the media - self promoting big time to stubbornly & egotistically confirm this reality)

Without change, I suspect we’ll be watching Zac, Reece & Jai in different stripes very soon. Only Gareth’s injury & a lot of bullshit kept Matt here this year

Detect a pattern?

If Aitken fails miserably and costs us the game today, I'm sure Mary will be pressured into dropping Aitken to the bench and selecting Lomax at right centre. You can be sure that if this happened, Aitken would get more minutes than any prevouse utility Mary has had on the bench. Solving two problems.

If Dufty has a bad hair day or gets injured, Lomax will come on as fullback and may just answer some of the problems we have with the fullback position.

‘Try assists’ might be one measure of a centre’s true worth to a team? Aitken has 5 in 83 games

Wouldn’t that be an all time record Waterboy?
WTF
Last one in 2017

Done good

Euan Aitken runs hard

If he plays in the forwards I expect to see him occasionally rag dolled.

Perhaps if he comes on when the opposition forwards are tired, he may bust the line.
