Wayne Bennett
WAYNE Bennett has cast a huge shadow for a return to the St George Illawarra Dragons but the man in charge for the moment, Paul McGregor, does have his supporters.
The Leader understands the Dragons will table a three-year, $3 million offer to Bennett — for a second stint at the club.
Bennett coached at the Dragons from 2009 to 2011, winning two minor premierships and the 2010 grand final, beating Sydney Roosters 32-8.
Since Bennett told Newcastle he was leaving last week, Bennett's name has been strongly linked with the Dragons.
But, despite pubic denials, the three Queensland-based NRL clubs, North Queensland Cowboys, Brisbane and Gold Coast Titans, are interested now he is available.
McGregor, who took over from sacked coach Steve Price, has taken the Dragons to ninth on the NRL ladder, in his six matches at the helm.
McGregor has impressed the players with his footy knowledge and ability to relate to them.
Should Bennett not coach at the Dragons, the Leader understands, that McGregor would then be the front runner for the job full-time in 2015.
In other news, Trent Merrin is out for two weeks with a shoulder injury, and injured winger Brett Morris could be a late inclusion for next Monday night's clash with premiership leader Manly at Jubilee Oval.
Lock Merrin damaged his AC joint in the first tackle he made in last week's third and final State of Origin game at Suncorp Stadium.
Jack de Belin retains the No.13 jersey.
Morris hasn't played since dislocating his shoulder playing for NSW in State of Origin Game One in Brisbane in May.
He will have a fitness test on Monday to see if he can play against the Sea Eagles.
