Ahh, what a complex issue. Here is where we see the true ignorant attitudes flourish. See, those seeking to dismiss the idea that people could be so offended by such a sketch that they would seek redress by legal means are really shifting the goalposts of the argument.

They're saying "so what if I call someone a nice person, it's affectionate!" when what was said in the sketch was that to be gay is to be defective, to have something wrong with you, to be almost sub-human. If "Elton Johns" were simply described as a nice person, we wouldn't be having this discussion. Hate to break it to you guys, but that's not the same as giving someone an affectionate ribbing.

What amuses me most though is when anyone has their homophobic views challenged, they immediately retort that the challenger is a moral crusader rather than trying to address the issue. When you resort to name-calling, you've got nothing.

The funny thing is, most of these posters seem rather rational in other threads, yet always resort to what, to me, seems to be an irrational fear of what's different. Except for blacktip-reefy, Raudonikis and millersnose, who are clearly insane.

As the groups he mentioned have suffered significantly as a result of discrimination against the skin colour etc, he is arguing that the potential harm is greater for them, as would be the level of sensitivity, again if I have got it right.

Although i don't believe that being Homosexual is a mental disorder, there is scientific evidence that Homosexuals do have a Gene in there body that functions differently to Straight people, which has led to calls of Homosexuality being called a Mental Disorder. The main reason it isn't called so at present is fear of a public outcry. Ill put the name of the textbook i got it from when i find it if you like.

Don't be so hasty to dismiss the findings while riding your moral chariot;-).

Look Millers, I don't expect the Footy show to be sued or whatever.
I simply argued that I can understand how it was offensive.
I explained it in a post earlier but I'll go again:

The skit, as I know it, shows a Johns brother being rejected and wanting to be returned.
That highlights a very real issue with homosexual people who can have parents and families disown them and reject them.
It also portrays that it's negative to be homosexual and it's bad.

As for your question, some are socially acceptable to ridicule - Doesn't mean it's a good thing.
