Maybe this is more relevant then.

Ok, maybe it would be wrong for them to use the Jets moniker considering it has been used before, by a true foundation club no less.

HOWEVER, even if Newtown were upset, do they even have the money to take the matter to court?

For everyone out there, i am sorry but the NRL is the NSWRL. Only the name has changed, is that a good thing? idk but while we count 1908 as the start of our competition and count every NSWRL premiership winning team from 1908-1994 as premierships for NRL teams, then the Jets have played in the comp before.

I agree.
The game has a pretty f**ked up way of keeping its history books in order.
The history is claimed back until 1908, but the comp has changed about three times since then.
Your last bit throws up some dust, if the titles aquired by teams pre 1998, and indeed pre 1995, are counted in the official NRL tally, then by that definition the Jets did play in the "NRL".
An issue that could probably have been avoided had the NRL sorted its sh*t with regard to its history once and for all.

On a side note, it would probably also solve the sh*t fight that has become the "Mergers and Premiership Tallies" thread.

Newtown certainly would not take Ipswich to court over the name only if they use our trademarks, that would be the only way, however Trade practices would have to determine if there would be anyway the brands could be confused, There is a JETS brand that produces swimwear that registered the name as a trademark and too action which was settled in regard to merchandise and was settled when Newtown agreed not to produce any swimwear merchandise in any form, They may be a different battle for Ipswich should they join as the league produces towels and associated products.

Good luck to Ipswich with their bid, but to use the Jets logo is a joke.

The Jets will always be known as Newtown, and last I looked their club is still running around in the lower grades, it is not as if we are talking about Annandale.

Just pick another monicker, it is not as if there is nothing left to choose from.

What a joke. If Newtown objected to Ipswich using the name Jets they should have said something 25 years ago when Ipswich was deciding what the nickname would be. To take legal action after 25 years is laughable and will look like sour grapes.

NSW and QLD cup are not professional competitions, they are semi-pro at best.

The Newtown Jets, like it or not, are an will always be part of the history of the NRL. Therefore their mascot should not and will be be allowed to be used by another team in the same competition regardless of any plan, or lack of plans, for Newtown to rejoin the comp.

If Redcliffe stopped the GC titans from using the name dolphins and Cronulla Stopped the GC Suns from using the name Sharks, the the Newtown Jets will definitely stop Ipswich cashing in on an already existing brand in the 'jets' regardless of anything else.

That's a joke, right? Did Gold Coast Titans and Gold Coast Suns have the names Dolphins/Sharks for 25 years?

Not sure why Newtown would bother as there are no assets in Ipswich and if the Q Cup mob had anything of value at all they would have been wound up years ago to pay their debts.

excuse me?

I wasn't 'raggin' on my own team, whatever that means. I was just pointing out your logic. If bluebags are worse ever and Rabbitohs are 2nd worse, where does that leave a white fat dog? or a titan or a rooster?

They are just names that get the kids going, no need to insult certain teams especially when your team does not hold up to the same level.

I for one love the name 'Bulldogs' but as far as sports team go, it is not one of the best.

You seem to have 3 teams. Bulldogs, Bunnies and Bears.

I don't think a Jets team should be admitted to the NRL unless it has some link to the Newtown Jets.

Pick another name from a defunct non-NSWRL/NRL club, or from a club from another comp or code. OR, make up your own.

The Ipswich Hansons? The Hanson Xenophobes? The Ipswich Reds? Toowoomba Cyldesdales?

I still think that Diehards is a great name in the Defiant, Dreadnaught tradition and is ripe for re-use.

Why shouldn't the Ipswich Jets use the name they have had for 25 years?

So if the Bears fail to get into the comp in 2013 and Ipswich decides to call themselves the bears you have no problem with that?

Its the same thing.

How is that the same thing? Have Ipswich been known as the Bears for 25 years?
