NRL faces major turmoil as clubs threaten breakaway league

I'm not defending grant, but I think certain clubs were always looking for a confrontation that would lead to this and I get the impression they are happy Grant bungled the club funding & gave them the ammunition.

NRL faces major turmoil as clubs threaten breakaway league

Politis and dib refused to sign the MOU without a clause being inserted to state it was not a binding agreement. That was obviously to protect clubs interests so if things weren't going their way they could revoke on the agreement and continue threatsabout breakaway comps. It's ironic that the...

NRL faces major turmoil as clubs threaten breakaway league

I think it's probably a bit of both, annual reports are PR fluff to begin with and I'm sure Grant is using emotive language to give the impression of clubs being greedy. Reality is the governance of the game is effectively broken, stakeholders don't trust each other, that is why nothing is...

NRL faces major turmoil as clubs threaten breakaway league

It's really ironic that the roosters, Bulldogs & panthers allegedly refused to sign the memorandum of understanding until a clause that stated it was a "binding agreement" was removed. Had they not kicked up a fuss the ARLC may not have been able to revoke the agreement.

NRL faces major turmoil as clubs threaten breakaway league

Please! He may get away with things in Melbourne where the media are sycophants and treat the afl with kid gloves but in Sydney the toff wouldn't last a month, I will never forget the interview he gave with that parrot Alan Jones, he couldn't handle it so he said he was 'on the car phone and...

NRL faces major turmoil as clubs threaten breakaway league

I don't believe that wasn't deliberate. It gave him plausible deniability, allowed him to avoid answering some difficult questions & bide him some time.

NRL faces major turmoil as clubs threaten breakaway league

The most telling thing out of this whole ordeal for me was that Grant was apparently 'blindsided' by the clubs level of discontent, something that has been public knowledge and widely reported in the media for at least the last 6 months, and he naively waltzes into what was reported as a...

NRL faces major turmoil as clubs threaten breakaway league

From 2018 they are taking their websites back from Telstra so they will control ad revenue, of which clubs were to receive equal share. That means they will be solely responsible for providing content to drive web traffic, I think the digital strategy will mirror somewhat what the AFL have with...

Gould is a narcissist, he will inevitably whinge regardless of who is the running the game.

NRL faces major turmoil as clubs threaten breakaway league

Because that is what is behind the clubs discontent the last 5 years! Club funding is just the latest of many fractures between the commission and clubs/states and it's all rooted in a constitution which gives stakeholders no say in the makeup of the board deciding the games fate. Clubs resent...

NRL faces major turmoil as clubs threaten breakaway league

A lawyer needs to draft a revised constitution to reflect proposed changes negotiated between stakeholders.

NRL faces major turmoil as clubs threaten breakaway league

Apparently the money is no longer available for the clubs because the commission has identified digital as an area they want very significant investment.

NRL faces major turmoil as clubs threaten breakaway league

Grant is the deputy chair of the RLIF which during the four nations held a congress in London that voted on hosting nations for the next two world cups, among other things. It's not an issue IMO, the problem is why nothing was done during the other 11 months he was in Australia. Like most things...

NRL faces major turmoil as clubs threaten breakaway league

Not up to him, clubs have no say, which is part of their problem.

NRL faces major turmoil as clubs threaten breakaway league

Unless he caves he's gone. Constitution provides two mechanisms to remove a director, Simple majority of all 26 members (50% + 1) ie. 14 clubs Or Super majority 10 clubs + QRL + NSWRL Either way Grant is f**ked. I think clubs probably hope he caves and stays on, otherwise the commission...

NRL faces major turmoil as clubs threaten breakaway league

They can, they do & I think they will. They need 10 clubs as well as the QRL & NSWRL, the only question mark would be the QRL. Betros was with the chairman at the pub... Problem is, if they get rid of Grant he will only be replaced by the commission anyway, so it would only really be a...

NRL faces major turmoil as clubs threaten breakaway league

The game is crippled by indecision, to have made zero progress and to have actually gone backwards in twelve months is embarrassing leadership.

NRL faces major turmoil as clubs threaten breakaway league

It's an absolute mess, nothing has progressed since last December and now even that work has been undone. Back to square one. What a farce. Where's the leadership? Neither side seems capable of compromise.

It's closer to $40m in revenue and have you never heard the saying it takes money to make money? There are expenses in servicing those revenues.
