The Bears don't have $30m sitting around to splash on an NRL licence. They've always been a poor club.

Why do you think the Northern Eagles lasted no longer than the Crushers and Reds?

Bears couldn't pay their share.

None of the NZ bids have $30m lying around.

Warriors are one of the poorest clubs in the NRL.

Broncos, Dolphins and Cowboys are the richest. The ARLC needs rich clubs that won't require financial assistance. Brisbane Tigers are the only bid that can provide that guarantee.

The last thing the nine Sydney clubs will want is a return of the Bears. Most of them are dirt poor and struggle for media coverage in an oversaturated market. Adding another Sydney brand will only make it harder for them.

There are loonies on here talking about teams from Sydney taking their home games to NSO to accommodate the Bears. It will never happen.
The Bears had more money than Manly at the time of the merger.

Warriors are the least watched team in Australia.

Why do you think Christchurch and PNG will succeed where the Warriors have failed?

How many people from Brisbane and Sydney will watch a Perth-based team?

The only way I see Perth having a strong following in Brisbane and Sydney is if they're powerhouses on the field (like the Storm).

Maroon Observer doesn't think Perth and PNG are viable and doubts they'll get a licence. Nor does he believe the Bears are coming back.

The fact you think Bears and PNG are coming proves your views don't "mirror" what he says.

You cannot see why I don't think Bears and PNG are coming?

How about the fact no one in WA wants the Bears?

Or the fact no one in WA needs the Bears?

Or the fact the Bears have f**k all money?

Or the fact North Sydney don't have a large amount of NRL standard juniors running around their district?

As for PNG.

No one will want to play for them.

Broadcasters won't want them.

Club will never be viable.

None of the clubs want a team to be based in PNG.

The 17 clubs are demanding one-third of the Gov's $600m funding proposal be allocated to them. That's not going to happen.

V'landys said the clubs need to approve of PNG for it to get the licence.

Only an idiot would continue to push the PNG narrative.

Who is maroon observer?! Seems to think game is dying when it's in it's best position in a long while..

I can understand his concerns.

V'landys is causing more harm than good. There's never been a better time for him to expand into SEQ. The idiot should be using the Olympics to push for a largrer Lang Park to host grand finals and boutique stadia in Moreton Bay and southern Brisbane to accommodate Dolphins and Brisbane Tigers. All he cares about is Leichhardt and other shithole suburban grounds in Sydney.

V'landys is annoying rugby league fans in Queensland and Western Australia by pushing for the return of a dead Sydney club that most fans do not want and a basket case PNG team that adds nothing but a headache and endless debt. He even managed to piss off the Papuans by pushing for a "Pasifika" team based in Cairns and playing home games in five or six countries!

The game's finances are reliant on Ch9 and Foxtel. FTA is a dying model. Foxtel is also a dying model. Both media have had to cut costs in other areas to hang onto the NRL. There's not much more they can sacrifice. On top of that, V'landys and a few on here expect them to increase the amount they pay to accommodate three new teams from markets that provide little to no return. Ch9 and Foxtel aren't going to invest in teams from PNG and NZ. Ch9 won't invest in Perth due to the time zone not being favourable for 66% of their content.

We've seen Foxtel drop rugby union, soccer and BeIN Sport to cut costs. In doing so they've lost a lot of content to streaming services. NBL is now on ESPN and not exclusive to Foxtel. They've lost a lot of drama content. BBC are cutting ties with Foxtel and will air their first run content on Britbox. There's will be more BBC content on Fetch than on Foxtel. HBO is going to launch their streaming service in Australia when their deal with Foxtel expires. Foxtel has lost The Simpsons, Family Guy, Days of Our Lives and Young and The Restless.

Nobody knows how things will play out for certain but looking around the world; FTA losing viewers has made the events with most viewers more valuable. Streamers are competitors for pay tv which drive up rights.

How many services in Australia can spend $400-500m per annum on the NRL broadcast rights?

Foxtel/Kayo is the only one that has shown interest in spending anywhere close to that amount. US companies won't spend up big for a product that's only appealing to viewers in Australia.

What happened to the merger?
Lots of bribes, money under the table, Arko and Fulton using their influence of power in ARL circles.
So many wrongs but nothing anybody could do, as soon as those papers were signed with Manly being given the NRL licence if the merger failed, the writing was on the wall, the former Norths Chairman was driving around in a brand new Maserati, the former Norths CEO had a new cushy job at Manly Leagues Club, and Arko and Fulton then did everything in their power for their beloved Sea Eagles to return the rugby leagues top tier.

Arthurson was a corrupt old bastard. He caused more harm than good during his reign as leader of the NSWRL/ARL.

The Queensland teams and Melbourne turned down the offer to play in Las Vegas because it's a logistical pain in the arse.

Las Vegas is a dumbarse idea and will fade into obscurity over time.

Yep those damn fools

bringing in 3 clubs from Queensland, one from nz and one from Perth

should’ve stuck to Sydney
If they're so great then why did they make the Cowboys and Reds cover the travel and accommodation expenses for Sydney clubs?

Whenever you're confronted with this fact you either ignore it or pretend it never happened.

If they're so great why did they provide special privileges to the Knight's in 1988?

Broncos weren't given the same privileges.

If they're so great then why did they antagonise the Broncos by bringing in the Giants after agreeing to not set up additional teams in SEQ?

If they're so great then why did eight clubs sign with News Ltd?

If they're so great then why did they walk away in 1997 so News Ltd could throw the "loyal" Chargers, Crushers, Tigers, Magpies, Stelers, Dragons, Bears, Sea Eagles and Rabbitohs under the bus?

If they're so great then why did the idiots gift the pay TV rights to Packer for free?
