18th club, whose next?

They deserve to be on their own. PNG have enormous passion for the game. However, they do have challenges. How is it going to work? The time for them is not now.

The 18th club should be either Perth or NZ 2. Perth does offer another metro, and I would lean towards them. But NZ 2 would be great too.

They all have challenges, how they get past them is going to be interesting

They offered an extra round of afl when the initial bidding was poor

I also suspect they’ve added tasmania as well so extra future content and if they don’t get added the tv deal is less
I think the content he was talking about was the length of broadcast etc
they have 33% more broadcast time & thats why they get a lot more according to lamback

but
that wasn't the case in the previous deals , the last one had a miniscule difference in $$ terms & they had 9 more games then us
content is NOT the determining factor & never has been.

They have a extra round not only for the new years but the next 2 as well, Then of course they may bring extra teams in.

Yep so you have $240m a year of subs. I agree with that for both codes.

That is why we get ads even though we pay for Fox Sports.

One sport has ads in:

Pre-game
Qtr time
Half time
3/4 time
Post game

as opposed to

Pre-game
Half time
Post game.

So you have less chance to get a top up to subs by advertising.

On the $40 per month.

At only people having it for NRL while the game gets $600m from TV.
It would be 6 months at $40 it would take 2.5m subs that is more than Kayo has.

How many people in Perth will drop $40 a month on RL and pay for Kayo? Their fan base will like AFL so aren't getting rid of Kayo.

It certainly can get to $500m or more a season and for the reasons above that is market value to not lose money
again
content made barely an ounce of difference in the last deal
NRL 380 mill
AFL 416 Mill

& its of no significance again
we got dudded & thats the end of the discussion

600 mill is about where we need to be for 2028-32

Deserve has got nothing to do with it.

It's the NRL's decision to grant a licence, not the PNG government, not the Australian government, not AUKUS, not China.

PNG have been handed billions of dollars and what have they done with it? Pissed it up the wall, with the corrupt getting richer and the poor remaining poor.

What is going to be the difference with giving money to an NRL club?
Agree with your summary. I think the theory is the messaging gets more engagement through footy than other means.

Yeh that’s an excellent argument

Ideally yes png on their own is better

but getting 8 home games is better than none

That’s the best argument that longer game time for afl doesn’t mean much and the nrl should be aiming to at least match afl next time if not beat it

Pacific team gives us:

18 clubs
Bigger tv deal
Ongoing government support other codes can only dream of
Massive exposure from acceptance into the comp till kick off
A truly South Pacific competition
Opportunity to develop a new massive player pool to strengthen the comp
Potential Investment into the game from major companies we could only dream of
Opportunity for the game to be a force for change in countries that need development on multiple levels.
fine by me

Some are getting 25 million pa in govt funds others are getting vague promises to upgrade a decrepit ground

nz don’t even have a proper bid yet
and there you go again with stating your hypotheticals as facts
you dont know what the feds are offering
you dont know what the WA Govt is offering
HBF park isnt decrepit
If they announce NZ as the next license area bids will no doubt appear, Bears for starters.

By then the fumblers will be at $1B.

It’s funny when it’s an article from Nick polities saying Perth should get a team you believe it

25 million pa blow everyone out of the water and you know it

wa can actually come up with something competitive in response or not

I believe what Politis said, because he is quoted as saying it!
Youve taken a qoute from a news ltd journo that has no source, made up ten year duration out of your arse and come up with $250mill for a pasifika club lol
then you've made up what the WA govt is and isnt offering, and thrown an untrue jibe about perths stadium into the mix

Who knows what WA is coming up with, no one knows except those involved.
What NRL should be asking for is:
New West stand at HBF Park
CofE for RL in WA
Financial sponsorship for jnr/female programs and especially in regional WA communities

both codes will be after new deals starting in 2032 , so both will negotiating around the same time

performance will be a big determining factor & in 2023 ... we're killing em on STV

If there has to be a Pasifika Team, I think it works best as a second Auckland Team. Would have the potential for Australian & NZ government funding, but still has the potential to survive if the funding stops.
