18th club, whose next?

Has the government actually ever tabled this supposed 25 mil or did the media just take an off handed comment by a politician during a political visit to a pacific island and run with it

If they have then I'd be countering and asking them to instead spend the 25 mil on grassroots, scholarships, training & welfare programs and RL facilities in PNG

The NRL and the clubs get the most out of increased player pathways and quality from png, and the best way to gain this is to invest in the actual game in PNG, not send a team based in Aus there on a fifo basis - a PNG team today has no financial value outside of accepting the gov on their word for grants

I'm sure Port Moresby will one day have a team of its own in the NRL, but that day should not be today, especially one lumped together with the rest of the pacific, and based in regional aus

I'd rather see the Australian government buy meat and produce from Australian farmers and provide it in all schools across PNG alongside a dedicated rugby league program. Getting undernourished kids in PNG well fed will do more to get Papuans in the NRL than this FIFO team that Albo wants. Papuans need to increase their height so they can physically compete with Polynesians and whites in the NRL.
A good diet from childhood will add a few inches to their height.

I think looking at the rivalry between the broncs and dolphins that a 2nd NZ team will have the inside running for next off the rank. I'd leave another brissy team till last , making it 20 teams. Let this rivalry get established.
NZ2 won't be like the Dolphins. It'll be based in a regional city of a country that worships RU. The "derby" will be Aufklame vs regional city that is half the size of the Gold Coast. It won't generate 1 million TV viewers. Nor will it bring in 52k fans to the stadium.

Surely Perth offers more to the broadcasters and NRL than NZ2?

take telstra out of both of their last few deals
they're at 356 to 366 million cash
their cash went to 550 million

my point stands!

$550m counts 24% extra to allow for inflation though. So is $420m in 2023 money… on par with the NRL equivalent

The AFL this time was announced as $4.5b over 7 years.

That includes Telstra money for internet rights ( Last deal was $60m a season) - Making roughly $400m OF the $4.5b internet rights.

Leaves $4.1b - The press release when the rights were announced stated Marvel upgrade money was included.

The Victoria government is paying $250m for that. A 50/50 split is likely.

This leaves the TV money balance at $3.8 billion across 7 years - or $550m.

Now every year the deal won't be the same. So that includes around 20% inflation for the 2031 figure - So the deal is starting at way less then $550m.

Compare that to NRL that announced a per year amount of over $400m. That one will increase each year because the total is capped in the announcement.

2023 - is $400m cash
2024 - $412m cash
2025 - $424m cash
2026 - $436m cash
2027 - $449m cash
2028 - $462m cash
2029 - $475m cash
2030 - $489m cash
2031 - $503m cash

Now you add up the same period of time.

2025-2031

AFL $3.8b
NRL $3.2b

leaves $600m difference,

The last 4 years of the NRL in that period will be the new deal. I think it gets $100m extra with the new team.

Leaves $200m difference. or $28m difference Which is about where they have sat in the past.

This looks way more because to 2 deals aren't on the same timeline
you really dont understand how this works do you despite me showing you? lol
Its $400mil avg cash and contra over 5 years. A total of $2bill. Its starts under $400mill a year and finishes over $400mill a year. Around a 2% change each year.

NRL
so for us with a 5 year $2bill deal worth around $370mill a year cash avg it will be around (on 2% shift)
2023 $355.5mill
2024 $362.5mill
2025 $370mill
2026 $377.4mill
2027 $385mill

AFL
For them on a cash basis of $550mill cash avg a year over 7 years it will be somewhere in the region of (2% shift)
2025 $519mill
2026 $529 mill
2027 $539.2mill
2028 $550mill
2029 $561mill
2030 $572.2mill
2031 $583.6mill

So in 2028-2032 just to match them we'd need to be delivering a cash tv deal worth around $570mil a year. Thats a jump of $200mill a year on the current contract.
I was wondering where afl red has been

he’s back with a vengeance

Extra $200m from 2028 onwards isn't out of the question with if we add a 9th game and if the Dolphins continue to pull Broncos level ratings.

The only reason we have so many options is because we've starved Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide and New Zealand of teams for no other reason than to have nine in Sydney. No other sport in the region has been stupid enough to cater to one city to the detriment of everyone else.
Yes, can't disagree with that. It's good to see we are now looking outwards and also amazing to hear the admin say that if the Bears got back in there is no way it is in Sydney because we have enough sides there.

I used to think rationalising Sydney was a great idea, but I've come to realise that the last thing the game needs is to start causing that sort of shit in the game again just as we are getting our act together. I want our game to grow, not give a ''six again'' to rival codes.

And he has been told many times that the NRL has been reported as cash, He ignores what doesn’t suit his AFL loving view
