Shame they’ve ditched weekend origins and in doing so destroyed mid season test match opportunities. all so ch9 can get a couple of hundred thousand more tv viewers and pay no more money! Sigh.

Our game is controlled by the broadcasters. If we drew attendances of 25k or more each game then we would be in a stronger position to tell the broadcasters to get stuffed. Not many sporting leagues draw an average of 25k.

at least 10 decent wealth countries have sports comps with a 24k plus avg. just a shame ours is afl not nrl!

pre covid nrl sat about 27th on world domestic sports comps attendances

There will be 18 teams. Need the extra game
NZ makes the most sense to get rid of some bad time slots
looks very likely it will be a two horse race. If perth can put some serious cash on the table and agree to support the nrlwa then we’ll be in. If nz2 can show some level of financial sustainability and backing and skynz come to the party they’ll be in. Not very long term strategic but that’s the nrl for you.

I’d rather the nrl were strategic and working with the wa govt to get some serious govt support for stadium upgrade and nrlwa CofE rather than just worrying about short term cash in the table.

weve had two years of $5billion surpluses, the govt is cashed up and nows a great time to be hitting them up with a promise of a club.

It is unlikely it will be perth anything. West coast, WA or western somethings is much more likely.

or maybe we’ll just go with “The” lol

West Coast Pirates?

Although the funny thing is some people in the 80's were pissed the Eagles were called West Coast when they entered the then VFL in 1987.

The clubs have already voted their support for nz

from a financial viewpoint nz adds the most to the tv deal due to sky nz also paying more. The nrl could potentially sell that 9th game for 50 million or more based on the current market rates

factor in five years down the track and it will be a whole lot more

also taking on rugby union in nz will be far easier than taking on afl in wa given the collapse of super rugby

a Christchurch based team also playing games at Wellington, denedin and Hamilton should be the way to go

if vlandys adds nz2 to Brisbane 2 he will have added the two areas that can add the most to the game. Contrast to gallop who added the titans before these areas, or Greenberg who added nobody

No.. that's spreading the games too thinly.

I'd go for

Warriors - 10 home games in Auckland, 2 home games in Hamilton, trial game in Rotorua each year

Southern Stingrays (or whatever NZ 2 is named) - 10 home games in Christchurch, 1 in Wellington, 1 in Dunedin, and 1 trial game per year in some other city south of Lake Taupo.

Basically splitting NZ at Lake Taupo
North of there = Warriors, South of there = the new club.

It divides the population of NZ more evenly than "North Island/South Island", as North Island is approx 4 million vs 1 million people in the South Island.

Plus it gives scope for a third team in the long run, based in Wellington which would break the country into Upper North Island (Warriors), Lower North Island & South Island.

have the clubs voted this?

is there any confirmation that sky will pay that much?

This idea that NRL has to take on AFL in WA is stupid. A lot of Rugby League fans have this dumb idea that if you can't be the number 1 sport in a region then its not worth doing.

No they havent
No there isnt (people are getting excited because of the increase in the new SkyNZ deal but that was all about competition from streaming, the Sky NZ deal has been pretty static up till now for many years)
No it wont. but adding another major capital city that is booming economically and is predicted to grow to over 3 million with another mining boom on the way, the strongest grass roots RL outside the traditional states and millionaire backers committed to the cause is why you'd go there over Union NZ cities that have none of those things.

of course it will never topple AFL in WA, VIC or SA but it's not a game of Risk is it lol.
