18th club, whose next?

It’s so weird seeing so many qld wanting Perth in ahead of the tigers

most of the support for the tigers come from nrl fans from Sydney plus grotd

is this because they don’t want to share with more clubs ?

the introduction of the dolphins will see broncos crowd average rise close to 40k this year
That's exactly the reason. Broncos fans don't want to share Brisbane with anyone because they like being the glamour club that has an embarrassment of resources all to themselves.

Titans fans are anxious because their club struggles for corporate support. The club is between a rock and a hard place. It's based in a large regional centre that isn't as passionate about the game as Townsville and has competition from surfing, party culture and fumbleball.

Cowboys fans are paranoid because they believe north Queenslanders are treated like second-class citizens by the Queensland Gov. In their eyes another Brisbane team will drop the Cowboys down the food chain.

Dolphins fans will want their club to pick the guts out of Logan and Ipswich, despite not representing either region in any way.

It could be all of those strawman arguments, but you know it could be that people think the game should expand to become truly national.

reality is it barely had any effect, a winning team was far more a factor. Despite the hype of the dolphins and the boost of a derby game the Broncos crowds last year were still lower than 13 years ago.
between 33-34k is their norm when they doing well. Dolphins made no difference to that last year.
Broncos had to play a few games at the Gabba during the soccer world cup. That didn't help their attendances. Games at Lang Park drew great crowds.

That’s an old argument from over 25 years ago that has no currency now. The rights and wrongs of it are highly debatable and no longer interesting. The Perth team was genuine expansion and should have been kept in my opinion. They were sold out by short term interests. For the betterment of the game long term we should already be back in that market and should never have left. For blokes like PR, love him or hate him, throwing out Perth was a very poor call given the gains we were making there. The Perth league community was decimated by that decision and it’s hardly surprising that it still hurts. Perth lost a team, but we lost an opportunity to genuinely compete with the fumblers. Instead we gave them Perth completely and they took the opportunity to genuinely expand in return. If we put another team in Brisbane rather than Perth then we might as well give up imho. It’s time the game showed confidence in itself and hit the opposition where it hurts.
If Perth gets a team before Brisbane gets a third then my interest in the game will drop considerably. I might even stop watching it altogether.

The Perth bid is lightyears behind the Brisbane Tigers on all metrics that count.

Brisbane Tigers have $135m in assets.

Perth bid has $0.

Brisbane Tigers have an NRL standard high performance training centre.

Perth does not have a training base.

Brisbane Tigers have a footprint extending from Bulimba to Yarrabilba. It has produced dozens of high quality rugby league players that have gone on to represent Queensland and Australia. Perth produces second rate players that are plodders at best. None are good enough to make the Kangaroos and will never be stars commanding fat pay cheques.

The Brisbane Tigers are tipped to be one of the four richest clubs in the NRL when they get a licence. Perth will be one of the poorest clubs in the NRL, struggling by on $5-8m from football operations because the media will be hostile and its corporate facilities at PRS aren't up to standard.

The fact a Perth-based club will need to link up with a second-tier team from Queensland or NSW makes it a logistical nightmare. Flying players across the country to play in the Queensland/NSW Cup will be costly and turn fringe players against the club.

Do you think that the Brisbane Tigers footprint/area will cease producing players if they don’t get a team? Or that interest in RL there will drop?

Why does it matter where the players come from? Is there any other professional sport in the world that thinks along those lines?

Or, if you truly believe that having a NRL team will lead to an area producing NRL players (it won’t - look at Melbourne), then isn‘t that a good reason to place teams in places like Perth?

The problem with your post is that you started with 'do you think'.

If Brisbane get yet another team in front of Perth it will signal the lack of courage of the games administration and contentment to be an east coast game with a muted future. How on earth we will ever dominated the Australian sporting landscape with such a lack of vision defies logic. Put a side in Perth, another in NZ and, if the stars align, one in PNG and we’ve got a comp our competition can only dream of. We can actually do this. They can’t. I never include Adelaide because it’s a basket case for sport. I am happy to be wrong.

I agree with you

but the reality is Perth will probably be in before easts

if png imploded then easts come in

but adding png Perth and Christchurch pacifika bears sure is a good move

It’s not the arls fault there is no club in Perth

now they just have to wait till the game recovers from the damage they created

Mate it’s over two decades ago. That argument is over a rotting corpse. All that matters is what we do now. And we need genuine growth. And that ain’t Brisbane 3 or the (bloody) Bears.

They could have brought in Perth in in 2015 like they were talking about. Of course it is NOW their fault.

You dont recover by waiting around.

Why won’t brisbane 3 be genuine growth ?

they will be a bigger club than Perth will ever be

there’s no metric where a Perth team beats brisbane easts

Under Dave smith or later Greenberg ?

Dopes like him barely convinced the other nrl clubs to admit the titans

the only reason Perth has a chance now is strong leadership

If it’s up to the clubs Perth has no chance

at this point in time they are all as bad as each other. Gallop and Vlandys have basically achieved the same so far, an additional queensland club.
If Vlandys can deliver on genuine expansion of the game and 20 clubs time will tell and he will be judged accordingly.
