My preference for Perth is based on the following:
Provides games for unpopular time spots in Sydney and Brisbane
Sunday 6pm AEST?
That's just one timeslot. It's not as bad as Thursday 8pm AEST or Fri 6pm AEST.
Strong Government support
The WA Gov has been very vocal, but hasn't told us how the ly plan on supporting a Perth-based club. All they've said is the club will help draw tourists to Perth.
Solid Rugby league history
Not much stronger than Melbourne.
A good (not brilliant) available ground
Corporate facilities are terrible. The club will rely on sponsorship and corporate hospitality for much of its income.
(Very) strong potential for sponsorship.
It'll be competing against Eagles and Dockers in a parochial fumbleball market that's half the size of Melbourne. Only a few of its matches will be broadcast into Perth on FTA.
Good structured in place.
A great model (Storm) to work off.
The Storm survived on extravagant funding from News Ltd for 15 years. They spent more than every club bar Brisbane. When News Ltd sold the club the ARLC injected almost $30m over five years into the club to keep it viable. Between 1998 and 2018 it received an additional $100m from News Ltd/ARLC. A Perth-based team won't have access to this sort of money.
V'landys said "no money will be wasted on rusted on AFL states".
It's an expensive dot on the map.
It provides access to a new player pool.
Melbourne has just 5k local players. Most of them are expatriates from New Zealand, Queensland, NSW and Brisbane.
The Goodwin brothers were originally from NSW.
it represents our first opportunity to grow in a market dominated by your opposition. They won’t want this.
They won't care because the Eagles and Dockers are strongly embedded in Perth's social fabric. AwFuL can cause significant problems for an NRL team by introducing a third Perth side.
The argument against appears to be fear of risk and whatever happened in Superleague over 25 years ago.
Toughen up lads.Perth is the go.
Like I said above, it'll be expensive and the ARLC cover the extravagant funding that it will require. The other 17 clubs, NSWRL and QRL will never agree to provide Perth with the concessions it will need to survive and thrive. The Storm spent $2-4m more than they made to become strong on the field. They also benefited from the axing of the Reds, Mariners and Crushers at end of 1997. Perth won't have these advantages.
Perth will be a poor man's version of the Titans.
