Think about someone like Katich - he was batting for his career every time he walked out to the middle despite how good he was. Khawaja has spent most of his career on his last chance. But guys like Marsh can average single digits for a season but the selectors retain him.

The old saying 'class is temporary, form is permanent' springs to mind. The problem is that the selectors tend to assign 'class' to their mates, and 'form' to blokes they don't really want in the side.

It's getting worse as well. At least with Katich he genuinely had quality players above him for the first probably half or three quarters of his career. Then he had a little rough trot 2004/2005 and was dropped, and only came back in at the age of 33 so there was always the threat a younger player might take his spot.

Guys like Burns and Renshaw are still in their 20s and have Aaron Finch and Shaun Marsh "above" them

Obviously we will likely never know the whole truth of it, but a lot of the chat has changed to "he didn't even know". Which is absolutely a failure of leadership in itself, but honestly I think you bring Smith straight back in. He just never captains Australia again.
