One positive if Starc can perform then that should spell the end of Johnson. And if Pattinson/Cutting perform then cya Siddle.

The problem with that is Starc is a left arm quick named Mitchell who can on occasions grab a bag of wickets, but more often than not sprays it around and goes for 4.5 rpo without taking any poles. I'm not seeing the advantage yet.

Surely Johnson is behind Cummins and Harris in the pecking order?

Siddle could do well at the GABBA as he did last year

I feel for Copeland but realistically he isn't a long term option IMO. Just too slow which is a shame.

I am not sure of who we will go with for this test but I'll be disappointed if Cutting doesn't get to debut at the Gabba this test.

I have no issue to be honest. For once we are picking blokes IN FORM- Starc is coming off a 5for in the Shield, Cutting is the best bowler in the Shield this season and Pattinson was the best quick in the tour game. Copeland, was pedestrian in the tour match in SA, and was deadly average today, accurate sure, but as penetrating as Mike Hussey!

No, With Hazelwood fit again I would only see Copeland minding his seat. If not Copeland then Butterworth.

But not having anyone in the attack who can bowl the long tight spells is a recipe for disaster. Any fool can look good when wickets are tumbling, but when the pitch isn't doing much for you, and the batsmen are set, it's long spells of tight bowling that dry up the runs get you wickets and I don't see anyone in the selected 12 that can be relied on to give us that regularly.

Actually the exact opposite. He was beating the ball all day, but doing too much and then when the ball did find the edge it was dropped. Could easily have had a 5-fer. Maybe try watching the stream rather than going on the figures.

Pay that. There is definitely hope for Starc. Just don't think he's ready yet.

I dont think the 3 of them are ready yet, but f**k I'm glad to see them in the team ahead of Notch, Siddle and co

this is what we've all been screaming out for..................change

they may not be an instant success but we may see the benefits in a year or so for picking them now, Sids and Notch are as good as they are ever going to get but this new batch of quicks has so much potential to be so much better imo

Very true he also did that against Sri Lanka and his wicketless match with the blues, he has been very unlucky so far this season with the ball but its the last point I have to agree on most. Siddle can be tidy on days but he can't be relied on to do so and Starc, Pattinson and Cutting are likely to leak runs rather then hold up one end. If they wanted to go with two of Starc, Pattinson and Cuttings then i think Copeland is essential IMO.

I saw this headline and all I could think was HOW CUTE! Australia may have stumbled a bit of late, but there is still a long way to fall before you could even compare New Zealand to them.
'No fear of Australia at all' - Bracewell
ESPNcricinfo staff
November 27, 2011

New Zealand seamer Doug Bracewell has said his team has the "mongrel" to topple Australia on their own turf, ahead of the two-Test series that gets underway at the Gabba from December 1. Bracewell, now in his second tour with the national team, said New Zealand are capable of playing a tougher brand of cricket.

"There's definitely no fear of Australia at all," Bracewell told the Sunday Star Times. "We've spoken about being more ruthless and having more mongrel as a team. Whether that's guys sledging or however they go about their business, we just want to be a tougher, more consistent team."

New Zealand haven't beaten their trans-Tasman rivals in a Test since 1993, and have not won in Australia for 26 years. However, the current Australian line-up they're up against at the Gabba is already depleted with the loss of Mitchell Johnson, Shane Watson, Patrick Cummins, Ryan Harris and Shaun Marsh. The bowling attack features three rookie fast bowlers, with Peter Siddle leading the attack.

Despite Australia's early setback with injuries to key players, Bracewell called his side the "underdogs" who have nothing to fear.

"Before we came over we said we want to be more aggressive and ruthless, especially playing the Aussies," Bracewell said. "They like to think they're the best team in the world and what not. We are the underdogs so it gives us that mongrel to go out and show that we're better than them - that we can beat them. We'll be looking to take it to them and show no fear."

New Zealand are coming off a short series in Zimbabwe, where they sneaked a Test win despite a spirited fightback by the home side. Bracewell said certain senior players and the coach John Wright are responsible for shaping the team's self-belief.

"It's mainly come from the coach and the likes of Rossco [captain Ross Taylor], [Daniel] Vettori and [Brendon] McCullum," Bracewell said.

He said a win in Australia is long overdue. "We owe it to the New Zealand public to try to get a win over here," Bracewell said. "I know our followers will respect us a lot more if we beat Australia over here. We're thinking about that. It's something to get inspired about."

Bracewell, who took a five-wicket haul in his debut Test in Zimbabwe, was in good form in the drawn tour match against Australia A, scoring an unbeaten 73 and taking four wickets.

Everything he said is very cute. I laughed.

Before you go off your chops, I was actually AT THE GAME yesterday, as Iwanted to see Copeland bowl, and he was 10 times worse than Hazelwood, that is without looking at stats, it is watching the game. He had one catch dropped...yeah so, every bowler does!
