1st Test: New Zealand v Australia at Wellington on Feb 12-16, 2016

Not to nit pick but the War wasn't 8 years. Sid did 19 innings for 63. Don Voges has got him already.

Did your grandfather play first class?

They didn't just jump back in the test cricket after the War. 1940-1948 is conceivable as an eight year gap.

Edit: other replies clarify it.

Was hoping we would bat all day today and we did. 280 runs ahead is very nice. Hopefully no declaration overnight, and we can get to a 350 plus lead. Expecting NZ to post a huge 2nd innings score

We haven't lost test series in NZ (South Africa and SL as well) in a long long time. So far looks like we wont have to worry about losing this test

I get your intended point. With all respect:

1946 in Wellington (1945/46)

1946 in Australia - but this time Ashes: (1946/47)

1946 in England

http://www.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/current/match/62662.html

and what could have been given test status in 1945 (Hello Keith Miller) but wasn't:

Do not worry about 1939. Windies toured England in 1939 for tests. Earlier that year England toured Safrica for the timeless test.

Haha. That's gold.

He sounded hard case.
He was mate, bless his soul. Still miss his stories, grew up having no choice but being a cricket nut. Even my Nan was a cricket tragic and saw Bradman play his first SCG test as a young girl in 28/9

Gotta love a lass who's keen to follow the cricket ;)

Might be a more common occurrence on your side of the ditch.

Was your dad a cricket nut too, or your grandfather on your mum's side?

Cricket was in the family, my great grandfather played NSW country and a few NSW 2nd XI games. Running the family farm was more important sadly. He once played against Trumper as a young man, while my pop played NSW country and played some first grade when he moved to Sydney. Also gave it alway for family reasons. I probably ilistened to Alan Macgilgray in the womb

Brings the rural folk in Australia together I spose and becomes a social life institution.

Like the rugby union does in small town NZ.

Dad loved his cricket and player indoor at a decent level, I had no choice but to be obsessed with the game at a young age. Mum absolutely hated the game but would always be happy to watch me play lol.

Just better things to do than watch your dad play?

Sounds like a good mum.

The time cricket takes and parents not being prepared to sacrifice that time has become a hurdle for participation in cricket in NZ. It will probably happen in Australia in the future, too.

Rowing is huge here, and sports like water polo are taking off because the time commitments for parents are probably less than rugby even. Let alone cricket.

It is not a whole day or a whole weekend.

What may save cricket is T20 as a pathway through junior to higher levels. Future test players may find the Warner route the norm to star test player.

Nah AL Mum hates cricket with a passion, actually most sports but would somehow always go watch me play indoor or outdoor, anywhere and everywhere. I remember one of the few times I scored runs and got my name in the paper my nan and mum got the article and it was on both their fridges for over a decade long after I stopped playing lol.

There is a saying

"The older I get , the better I was"

lol

Haha. Same holds for their peers, relative social institutions, behaviours and products.

Don't make like em they used to. (Often in fact holds true,)

Back in my day...

The problem with your generation today is...

Your generation is soft because...

Since when was a bit of banter politically incorrect?
