History of crowds of Brisbane/Parramatta games at QE II/Suncorp Stadium:

QE II Stadium

1993: 51,517
1994: 31,701
1996: 22,412
1998: 18,163, 21,172 (Finals match)
1999: 45,257
2000: 20,208
2001: 28,531
2002: 17,667, 19,115 (Finals match)

Suncorp Stadium

2003: 26,340
2004: 23,550
2005: 25,843
2006: 25,525
2007: 25,702
2008: 25,656

The 31,701 in 1994 was in the opening round, I believe. I think it was on a Sat afternoon. for 31,701 to turnout to a Sat arvo game is pretty impressive

Pretty poor crowd in Townsville but the Cowboys form may be part of that... and the whole Murray situation perhaps?

We're averaging 16,595 which isn't bad for the first official weekend of winter...

Looked bigger on TV

I say that here every week. I sound like a broken record.

Looked like 15,000 imo. I just take 3000 of the figure when im guessing the crowd these days.

I do think Melbourne people like the 5:30 games though, mainly because its after the AFL day game and before the game at night. The NRL should look into giving a few more of those, and Sunday arvo games.

what this illustrates for me more than anything is that the season is simply too long for people to maintain high interest.

It would be like the world cup finals going for 5 times the length: what would be the point?

But no, we are a comp ruled purely by tv needs, not fan or game needs, and this needs to be balanced. A max comp length of 22 rounds or even 20 rounds would see better atmosphere at all games in the form of crowd averages, thus driving up the appeal of league somewhat markedly. Fans would not be losing interest, and the game would come across as more exciting.

IN the past 5 years I have found myself switching off more and more as the regular season gets into the final month or so. The league season is too long, the players feel too strained to make it through and its shortening their career-span.

I just think that if the game cannot make the money it needs to survive off of 20-22 rounds, with state of origin and internationals thrown in, then what on earth is happening? Its a "fake" situation, in that the tv company is keeping the comp going for its own benefit, when everyone is tired of playing so many games, is fatigued from a gruelling season, and fans have been worn out as well.

What is the point of such a competition for players and fans? Never mind tv, that is derived from the players and fans....so why are we letting it be the other way and having players and fans derived from tv???

Its messed up, and it needs to be changed. Apart from the above listed benefits, this would also serve to balance each of the games "levels", club state and national more evenly. Because at the moment, tests are taking a back seat, and origins and clubs are smudged somewhat by having club games immediately before and after origin.

Very well said. I'm certain the mid season crowd dip has a lot to do with the length of the season.

The size of the crowd up here was to be expected though, Penrith aren't that popular up here, coupled in with the sacking of Murray, and the way they have even been performing of late makes even us diehards that have been loyal since day one a tad p!ssed off and reluctant to attend. They played with a bit more heart this week, just weren't good enough to come away with the cookies............

Apparently conditions were atrocious, so a decent crowd considering.

Are we going to be in for another wild, wet winter?

Me thinks if we're going to bid for the FIFA WC we better build some rooftop stadiums in Sydney.
