I'm shaking at my head at people explaination of Pearces selection. " There's no one else... " And people bag the selectors....

#7 is just that - a number. The only difference between halfback & 5/8th nowadays is one feeds the scrum.

Tell me; what is the Pearce can do that no other NSW halves can do?

Organise, well that's not to say that no one else could do it. Walsh & Maloney are both very good organisers too but are in my opinion inferior players.

The difference between the number 7 and 6 varies from team to team, some clubs like to split the halves some still prefer the traditional 1st and 2nd receiver. However at nearly all the clubs the role of the halfback is to direct the team round the park, the role of the 5/8 is to pick the ball up wide of the ruck in open space and create something.

Unfortunately we don't have the luxury of having one of the best players in the world at dummy half (Smith) who can organise the team thus allowing QLD to pick two 5/8's (although Lockyer & Thurston always had some organising skills but it was never their strength).

Pearce has improved slightly, but not enough to be considered 'good' yet. Despite the NRL and origin experience he has, he is still young and he still won't hit his prime in club and state for at least 2-3 years.

this is exactly what ive been saying

now there is a left half and a right half. every single team does this. there is no first and second receiver. obviously during the game sometimes they drift depending on where they are in attack but generally they stick to one side of the field.

most teams generally have one 'senior' or 'dominant' half who will organise, or a lot of teams leave this to the hooker.

the players in contention play on the following:

pearce - right (played left for nsw last year)
soward - right (played right for nsw last year)
maloney - right
carney - left
campese - left
mullen - left

so really you should take one from the first 3 and one from the bottom 3

I completely agree. I hadn't realy thought about it much, but now that you say it it's so obvious.
But probably unlikely because it is not currently a popular approach with the NSW family.

Walsh can't run the ball. That is one large aspect of his game that Pearce has ahead of him. Pearce and Campese are traditional halves anyway, Campese is at his best running out wide, Pearce is best in close to the ruck.

Walsh is possibly the worst defensive half in the NRL too. It may not seem important to some but at SOO level if you can't tackle you will get found out quick smart

Carney is a pretty average defender as well, something Campese is actually really good at.

Doesn't really matter how good your halves are defensively if NSW picks a mobile pack. A Qld side at full strength is going to score points no matter how well the halves tackle so you may as well go with the halves that will produce points. That's the main reason I reckon Pearce is not the right option.

This I don't agree with. The first two games this year when the Blues were well in it Qld only scored 24 points in total to our 30. That is an average of 15 points to 12.

A successful campaign would be built on a strong defense just like any other campaign whether it is an NRL season or a four nations tournament.

Balance is the key.

Base your game plan on attack and you risk leaking points, especially close to the line. Base it on defence and you struggle to score when opportunities arise.

Early defence is key and the right attitude.

- Game I last year, Smith toe one through and while the Blues look and marvel at such a nice grubber, the only on chasing is Thurston.

- Then Morris and Dugan decided to do a comedy act, while the only one with eyes on the ball is Yippy Yow Yea.

It has been a constant theme for this whole 6 year period. I like how Belly Act trials future prospects for Melbourne. He has them do some hard larbouring jobs and has the supervisor report who puts in the most. Attitude is worth as much a natural ability at Rep level. Remember Craig Fitzgibbon, was never selected for any rep stuff growing up, so he adopted a strong work ethic which lead him right to the top of Rugby League.

Maloney and Campo strong halves pairing. Both can defence have good size and play making ability.

Carney still has to prove he is serious about his footy.

Yet the Storm players for NSW were rubbish. Obviously you need a good attitude to succeed at this level but talent comes first.

Since 2005, the Storm players for NSW have been Matt King, Ryan Hoffman, Brett White, Anthony Quinn. (also Brett Finch when he was with the Storm was selected). King played the most.

King went well and Hoffman had his moments too

Also, you forgot Steve "facepalm" Turner from that list of Storm players

Just recieved a transcript of Fulton SOO 2012 plan for Sticky, Laurie and Gal

Sticky: Field Marshal Fulton has formulated a brilliant new tactical plan to ensure final victory in the field............Daley: Ah. Would this brilliant plan involve us running out of our changerooms and walking very slowly towards the opposition?...........Captain Gallen: How could you possibly know that, Laurie? It's classified information!........Daley: It's the same plan that we used last time and the seventeen times before that...........Sticky: Exactly! And that is what is so brilliant about it! It will catch the watchful Hun totally off guard! Doing precisely what we've done eighteen times before is exactly the last thing they'll expect us to do this time! There is, however, one small problem...........Daley: That we always get slaughtered in the first ten seconds............Sticky: That's right. And Field Marshal Fulton is worried this may be depressing the men a tad. So he's looking for a way to cheer them up...........Daley: Well, his resignation and suicide seems the obvious choice.........Sticky: Hmm, interesting thought. Make a note of it, Gallen.(might have plaguerized BlackAdder, but if leading Polictians can do it so can I)

I think we have been beaten by QLD 1, 6, 7 and 9 for the past series, realistically we dont have the same ability and depth that QLD have there but also some stupid decisions have been made.

QLD picked Slater when Hunt, Bowen and Wesser were in form and I think NSW have to do that with either Hayne or Stewart (Dugan is a gumby). Farah has to be in the 9 and given time while pick to halves and stick with them, Pearce and Soward are sh*t but is there anyone smuch better. Campese, Mullen and Carney are just as up and down as those two.
