Just to get a picture of the current situation, with just the one round left:

This year's aggregate up to and including R24 is 2,749,886.

Last year 2017: 2,865,152
Year before 2016: 2,921,617

We only need 115k to beat last year's aggregate. That should be easy enough.

The 171,731 to beat the 2016 figure needed - could be more difficult. Last night's crowd factored in means we need 159,424 from the last seven games.

Having a shot at likely crowds
Warriors v Canberra 28,000
Storm v Panthers 19,000
Knights v Dragons 24,000
Titans v Cowboys 27,000
Eels v Roosters 11,000
Bulldogs v Sharks 16,000
Broncos v Manly 42,000

That's 167,000 - some 8k more than needed, which is great. Let's hope we see those crowds.

Update...
Now we need 114,192 from the remaining five games to crack 2016's figure. Will be borderline on the numbers below - hopefully they all outperform.

Knights v Dragons 24,000
Titans v Cowboys 27,000
Eels v Roosters 11,000
Bulldogs v Sharks 16,000
Broncos v Manly 42,000

(Only 58k needed to beat last year, which will be a walk in the park.)

I wouldn't call Lions and Suns flourishing in non heartland areas.

And as far as GWS is concerned, the AFL are throwing money around like confetti. They depend on at least 5,000 ACT members, and the add ons of a netball team.
Yet their TV ratings are sh*ttier than a portaloo.

The Swans have an all seater stadium, rarely play on a Thursday night at home, never at 6pm Friday.Their TV ratings have made little headway over 36 years.
And you should be aware the Storm have reached 25,000 members, greater than the swans(ably assisted by sth Melbourne) in the same space of time.

The NRL expects a $40m plus profit this year.
.
SOO now being played or will be played, in AFL heartland cities to big crowds.
AFL did not last in Wellington NZ,a failure.

A new headquarters for the VRL provided by the Vic Govt, ditto for the SARL.

Hush money OK for harassment issues at clubs,OKayed by the CEO.
Brawls at AFL games at least on a few occasions in Adelaide and Melbourne.

It's not a one way all great street ,Light my Fire.
Off field it has not been a good year for AFL. They have made a mess of Lions and Suns. GWS has gone backwards. But the Swans are killing it with their crowds (Sorry to correct you but they had more members and crowds than Storm in year 20). It will be interesting to see how Storm’s crowds go once Slater and Smith are gone. Great crowd tonight given ordinary weather. Hopefully they schedule next weeks’s final at a time that doesn’t clash with Vic clubs AFL finals and they’ should get another big crowd. Saturday or a Sunday arvo is the go.

Yes, the NRL are trailblazers in professional world sport, still scheduling games in 1960s era venues, and times when the bulk of supporters don't want to go.

Of course the Swans don't do these things. The AFL aren't mongs like our mob at Moore Park

Surely you recognise that 2 top 8 teams hosting games in the last round is more conducive to big crowds than 2 bottom 4 teams hosting games (at ANZ)?

Sorry to be pedantic. The difference in year 20 was minimal, in fact a year or two later did not the Storm have more.,yes I know for only a year or so.You cannot ignore the fact the Sth Melbourne members (remembering this is the phoenix of that club)gave the Swans ,a decent membership boost.

Of course they are killing it with crowds.Schedules that suit them to a T in the overwhelming majority of cases. How many at 6pm Friday. No wonder they don't play at that time.
An all seater up to the minute stadium, with facilities that make the SFS look like an outback pub.A media that gives them favourable coverage, whereas in the case of the NRL negativity is the byword.Close to many of their supporter base.

You'd be aware of the coverage the Storm gets in Melbourne, opr should I say lack of it,the Swans is the complete opposite, and has been since they arrived in Sydney with Barry Round & CO.

Interesting the Swan's fans hated going to ANZ stadium, yet that is more suited to them than rugby league. And people wonder why rl fans hate the current configuration.
And their biggest leg up a SL war and then a G/F in the 90s.

But their local TV ratings except for final series have remained static.Yes you can praise them for crowds, but they have everything laid at their feet by the AFL/media/SL/marketing spends/and far better facilities than any Sydney NR: club.
And further the Swans have had year after year of either being in the top 8 or close enough to it.Get down to the A*se end of the comp ,and the latte section of their fans will drop off in bucket loads.

The real test for any comparison is having a new SFS/a reconfigured ANZ and Parramatta stadium.
You forget AFL who have been here since 1982 have two new up to date stadiums as of now,teh rectangular codes certainly do not.

BTW I'm more than embarrassed with some of the NRL crowds in Sydney ,but if you have ordinary facilities, lousy scheduling much of the time and well supported teams like Parramatta and the Dogs down the end of the table,it sure don't help building crowds.

And yes I would like to have the crowds, income of the AFL and guess what, the facilities, they have extracted from Governments over decades.

I agree full stop.We should have had lobbyists getting new stadiums 10-15 years ago.
But I also state, having decent facilities at your home ground sure as hell helps.
You think they'd(Swans) get 35,000 with the old SCG hill.
The AFL are excellent administrators I agree, they also are very capable with the sweep things under the carpet, until the cleaners arrive.Fremantle dockers and sexual harassment allegations, AFL CEO saw no problem with. payout for silence.
Our media exposes every nose pick.

Will the western Sydney clubs play finals games at ANZ or WSS next year? Has there been any word?

Takes a shine of things when you sell tickets at pay what you want though.

Why? It's called promotion. And we don't need warm Pommy beer or free Yorkshire pudding to do so.
They have opened it up for everyone to attend, the butcher, the baker, and the local town drunks.
Stop complaining.
