Beer Footy & Food Festival
BEER FOOTY & FOOD FESTIVAL RETURNS IN 2019 FOR ITS FOURTH YEAR

HENSON PARK – SATURDAY 27th JULY 2019

The Music and Booze Company and the Newtown Jets Rugby League Club have teamed up again to present the 2019 Beer, Footy & Food Festival. Returning to Henson Park the Beer, Footy & Food Festival is a winter ritual for lovers of tasty craft beers, delicious food and the Newtown Jets to embrace the day at historic Henson Park in Marrickville.

Henson Park is one of the few old-school sports grounds remaining in our fast-paced world. Drenched in history, Henson Park has witnessed many historic Jets games and brutal clashes in its 82-year history and is a reminder of a disappearing tradition: a Saturday afternoon sprawled on a blanket with family and friends watching the footy.

After 3 incredibly successful years, the family-friendly event will expand on its 2018 roster and welcome 30 brewers to Henson Park from across Australia. There’s also a plethora of food on offer with 15 local food trucks and businesses setting up shop.

The Beer, Footy & Food Festival is fun for the whole family, with 2019’s festival promising the biggest kid-friendly offering yet, with a giant tiger slide, a mechanical footy, petting zoo, obstacle course, jumping castles, face painters and more. Better yet, kids under 16 get into Henson Park for free!

BEER FOOTY & FOOD FESTIVAL WANTS TO MAKE NEWTOWN JETS’ FOLKLORE A REALITY

During a wet and miserable home game in the ‘90s, Ground Announcer John Lynch made up the day’s attendance figures, solemnly advising punters that the crowd stood at 8,972. The attendance of 8972 has been part of Jets folklore ever since and in 2019 the Beer Food & Footy Festival holds the high hopes of hitting that now-historic number.

I'd rather go to something like that than a Saints game at Homebush, Wollongong, or Moore Park.

Wow, what was the game? Why was it special?

What does the club do to "engage the community"?

Some Newcastle Rugby League games use to get pretty big crowds and maybe still does (the GF gets more than 10k most years I think). So I doubt it is a record for second tie.

But very interesting non the less.

Newcastle grandfinal had over 21000 in 1977. Cessnock v Maitland. Other grandfinals at No1 sportsgound would draw 16000 plus. The administration of clubs , especially in inner city Newcastle are proving to be lazy . They now push for the district grand final to be played at the stadium instead of the traditional No1 sports ground. This grandfinal drew 5500 last year on a Sunday. Hardly a money spinner or cultural event! ? But they (local club administrators)did get it easy as no tents & marquees had to be put up. So laziness is costing the code a local experience/event at No1 sports ground . That's what's happening in Newcastle.

Always have issues viewing the map on my phone. I take it there will be plenty of premium seats still available?

There are a few to sell in maroon on level 6, once they sell level 7 east will go on sale. Hopefully some good build up in Brisbane and it might nudge 40k.

Interesting numbers. I guess that was back in the days before the NRL clubs took over total dominance of the game from top to bottom. In 1977 a player could probably still represent NSW/Aus from a local comp.
The local league teams are now little more than feeder clubs for the Knights/ other clubs. As I've said people will watch local leagues but not reserve grades..

In the early 2000s Cessnock played Maitland at No1 sports ground in front of an estimated 18000. The Newcastle league officials were caught short of ticket numbers to enter the ground.

You were responding to a sharks fan who lives in the shire

Fair enough. Still not in Newcastle. So different areas have varying set ups. Purely about rugby league juniors as well. Also think their are enough people in Sydney to support daytime NRL matches in numbers. The Eels proved it yesterday and other codes have drawn well on Saturday afternoon in Sydney.

Is Newtown somebodies reserve grade now? If so too bad because thats a degrading status. Its bad enough that they play in what is considered a reserve grade competition. They should start their own comp with no affiliation to NRL clubs allowed. Compete with the NRL.

They are affiliated with the Sharks I believe.

Toilet lines were about 10 mins. Not as bad as I expected given it was a park football game. Pretty good concept.

I know the Rabbitohs are trying to build something similar at Redfern by playing the ISP, Womens and Jersey Flegg games on the same day. They are a good 2-3 years off getting there I reckon.
