First, it’s stupid to try and rationalise what individual Christians or congregations think their religion is telling them about LGB matters.
Second, it’s also silly to assume that the religious are any more consistent and coherent in their thinking than any other person when it comes to alcohol and gambling vs homosexuality. If this is the hill they choose to die on so be it.

This is embarrassing. The players need to be told to f**k off to Union or something. They act like They're being told to get involved in homosexual activity. The NRL and it's clubs ABSOLUTELY needs to show that it is inclusive.

For me, all the jersey is saying is "If you're gay, you are also welcome to enjoy the footy along with everyone else.". That's what it's all about, all of us coming together. It's not hard to see that the footy wouldn't have felt very welcoming for a gay man until recently (and it probably still isn't). We need to turn that around. Everyone should be able to go to the footy. If you're someone who doesn't want certain types of people watching the footy, you're a f**kwit.
I dunno, telling people to f#ck off because you don't agree with thier religious beliefs doesn't feel very inclusive to me.

If we told all religious players to f#ck off we'd loose about half the players in the nrl :D

"I don't know why Manly did this. I don't know why they went to the extra step," Gallen said on Nine's 100% Footy.

"I mean, Women in League round is so important. Every single one of us have been touched by women at some stage in our life: your mother, your missus, something. So, I think Women in League round is so important.

"I don't know why they had to go the extra step and wear the rainbow jersey or the pride jersey. I mean, it's 2022. I think everyone accepts that there are different people in life, people have different beliefs. I don't know why they wanted to promote this, to be honest ... I don't think it's the right thing to do.

"I think Women in League round is so important. They just should have stuck with Women in League round and should have left it at that.

"It's 2022. We know people are different. I don't understand why they had to try to promote it.

"They should have just left it (at) Women in League round, celebrate Women in League round, celebrate all the women in our lives and just get on with it."

I agree. Let's welcome white supremacists to our game and allow them to publicly share their views. I mean, it doesn't feel very inclusive if we don't agree with that. I thought the game moved past the skull types, but I guess not.

I really love this argument that everyone should accept their exclusionary actions otherwise we aren't being inclusive.

I agree. We shouldn't rationalise or decide anything based on any Christian or any other religious views.
If they don't believe that Rugby League should be an inclusive environment, then too bad. They don't like it, they can leave.

This is another own goal by Manly. You'd think a club that has kicked so many own goals off the field in recent years would have learned from the past and communicated to the club as a whole by letting the players know in advance they when they would be wearing the jersey and why they were doing it.

This just highlights yet again how this club is run, and the Penn and Fulton factions that run it. Empire building at its finest.

And are Manly that skint that they need another jersey to flog in merch?

Btw I was surfing google shopping and this caught my eye

What knuckle-draggers like Gallen (who has his own issues with bigotry, just ask Mickey Paea) don’t get is that just because we have made great strides in shifting societal attitudes, there’s still a long way to go.

I mean there’s at least two players currently playing the game today with suspensions for on-field homophobic slurs on their record in Mitch Moses and Marcelo Montoya.

This is a great initiative by Manly and I hope more teams follow suit.

Are you putting white supremists and Christians in the same category? That's just a tad of a stretch don't you think ?
The players haven't spoken out with hate speech have they ? If they did it would be a totally different situation.

Obviously it's a complex issue that despite your best efforts can't be solved on a rugby league forum.

Luckily not many people, apart from a few on here, take their social cues from Paul Gallen.

Do you think there is a single person or group who doesn't feel RL is inclusive? Off the top of my head

The Multicultural Round listed players with heritage in 40 odd countries

There are muslims, Mormons, Non religious people

Married, Single, short, Tall, Fat
Criminals, tossers like Moses

NRLW had the players kiss after origin. So we know there are gay female players

The game is for anyone.

Manly just wanted to flog off a few extra jersey's. In that respect they nailed it
I don’t disagree with anything you say here. I was merely pointing out that I believe there are differences between a religious person refusing to wear a jersey celebrating inclusion, compared to a gay man refusing to wear (in this case) a Muslim themed jersey where that group preaches exclusion as well as punishment of his minority group.

You've tried your best but this argument has been going for a thousand years and will go for another thousand. You're not going to solve it on a rugby league forum. Have a nice day.
When it comes to Christians that are so outspoken against the LGBTQIA+ community... Yes - they are both intolerant and exclusionary. It's also pretty funny that many white supremacists also justify their opinions with Christianity.

Think about the horrendous things that this community has been put through all in the name of Christianity and tell me it isn't the same at all.

I'm trying to see this from both sides. Trying to piont out how stupid other posters are from your stand piont isn't going to win any pionts.

Last year a video of a current player was released of him covered in oil getting sucked off by a bloke. He finished the year lifting the premiership trophy and with a new big contract and is celebrated by every team he has been in. I don't think the NRL has a big problem with inclusively...

As positive a move as some think this jersey was. It is undeniably one of the stupidest decisions a club has made in a while. They've somehow pissed off the LGBT and hardcore Christian community at the same time through their lack of any foresight. Possibly derailing their entire season and club image. Realistically this story has to be made to go away as soon as possible by all involved and then genuine, properly planned actions towards inclusivity can be taken (as they have been for years) to slowly clean up the game's image.

Well in that case you are correct

You're speaking far too much sense to be part of this thread.

The idea from Manly is great but probably shouldve done properly. Now theyve caught up in a difficult situation. From some reports the Manly players have been named which I dont agree with
They've chosen not to play, they basically named themselves.

A young gay Manly player has been devastated by the stance taken by seven of his club-mates to stand down this weekend rather than wear the club's pride jersey.

The players on Monday decided to boycott the clash with the Roosters, refusing to wear the jersey, which supports the LGBTQ community.

The players, believed to be Josh Aloiai, Jason Saab, Josh Schuster, Haumole Olakau'atu, Tolutau Koula, Christian Tuipulotu and Toafofoa Sipley, are refusing to play in the jersey on religious grounds.

But their stance has left a promising young homosexual Sea Eagle, who has not yet come out publicly, devastated.

"He is a good young player coming through the grades and just wanted to play first grade for Manly," a close friend of the player told Wide World of Sports.

Manly players Sean Keppie, Kieran Foran and Reuben Garrick sporting the club's pride jersey. (Manly Sea Eagles)
"But this move by the players has shocked him. He thought they would accept him for who he is if he ever decided to make his sexual preferences public - clearly that is not the case.

"He has been devastated by this turn of events - the pride jumper is supposed to be a sign of hope and inclusion.

"The fact that half the team would boycott it rather than play has deeply saddened him.

"They have no problem supporting gambling on their jumpers, which is a sin according to the Bible. But when it comes to homosexuality, they have a problem."
