I am sure it will have some popularity and it will be great for the game in general (continually improve international football and foster greater development of rugby league in those areas) but you will never get 3 million Australians watching it.

Pacific Islander was roughly 207k in 2016. As I said before you might get ok to decent TV numbers but you are not going to get millions of people watching it.

I’m just being realistic mate.

A game involving Australia (potentially) if international rugby league continually improves and rivalries grow could reach that number but a game involving two other nations would not be a chance.

I’ll give you a couple of examples

Soccer World Cup Final which would be the biggest event in sport (maybe some Olympic finals might match it) only achieved these figures

World Cup TV Ratings: SBS scores with 9.1 million viewers across 57 matches - Mediaweek

SBS has released its ratings figures for the 2018 FIFA World Cup Final between France and Croatia in Moscow, watched by an average audience of 600,000.

Australian open final involving an Australian winning the tournament was the highest ranking women’s final and even then some SOO matches have attracted similar numbers

Ash Barty’s drought-breaking Australian Open match was one of the highest rated Australian TV moments of the 21st century.

Achieving ratings that SOO that generally obtains every year is extraordinary and it often achieves similar or better ratings than many of the biggest international sporting events. The idea that a Samoan va Tongan or other such fixture would achieve similar ratings is implausible at the very least.

How am I nitpicking?

I’m just suggesting that SOO ratings are incredible and that Australians watch things that Australians are involved in. To suggest that ratings for two island countries would reach those numbers I think is incredibly optimistic or borderline fanciful.

As I said though I wouldn’t care about the ratings because I think its value would be in other ways and in my opinion, it’s value to the future of the game is much more than SOO.

Outside of Luai, their spine isn’t crash hot. It’s either filled with mediocre players (Levi), blokes who are past it (Milford) or blokes with a lot of talent but might not be suitable for the role (Sualii)

What i like to see with end of season internationals is to bring back the 4 nations. Below the 4 nations, have a second tier of 4 countries and have promotion/relegation. A team that comes last in the 4 nations gets relegated, and the team coming first in the second tier, gets promoted.

Strange that Crichton, Luai and To'o are good at club level but average or rubbish at Origin/International level. Then you have the likes of Munster and Cameron Smith who can play consistently at any level
