“Stuff understands that in the past the Warriors have tried to get the Anzac Day game moved to Auckland, but the NRL hasn’t budged and as it draws one of the Storm’s biggest crowds of the season, because of the ex-pat Kiwis that attend, they wouldn’t be keen on relinquishing it either.”

How many do you think would pack into mt smart at 9pm on what is essentially a Sunday?

The fixture doesn't work in NZ unless you made it the day game and moved Sydney to the night

I think as league fans we should be delighted that the Storm have an annual marquee fixture.

However to make it fair to the Warriors, why not schedule a yearly fixture against the Storm or someone else on Kings Birthday long weekend in NZ.

Storm vs Warriors should be an Anzac Day game. If it can’t be made to work I. Auckland on Anzac Day it stays in Melbourne.
That said- why can’t it be the early game with Roosters vs Dragons in the evening when it’s played in NZ?

The Warriors existed for 14 years before the Storm came up with the idea of the fixture and made it a marquee game.

Funny how it was never an issue before then.

Also an expansion team creating a marquee fixture which is there biggest game of the season is insular?

I knew Swans fans were ignorant petty wankers but that takes the cake.

I would assume that whenever this is doesn't match NSW, Vic or QLD observation of that day, so it wouldn't work for TV.

Very interesting choice of wording by Stuff. They don't actually say that they've spoken to anyone at the club, the NRL or elsewhere, they don't have any quotes or comments from anonymous sources or any form of actual evidence, they just 'understand' this had happened.

Personally I don't believe there is much substance in that line, otherwise Stuff would have said as such. Maybe some informal inquiries were made, but there is no evidence of anything more than that. When I worked at the NRL the Warriors were only ever supportive of the ANZAC concept and were not happy about what happened in 2015.

The concept never would have happened if it wasn't for the Warriors working with the Storm to push it. They've played a huge part in making it the marquee game that it is and helped get past a very unsupportive NRL management when it first started.

With regards to your comment about the NRL being too insular, 100% agree there, but this is one scenario (and there are very few) where I believe they haven't intentionally look to treat anywhere out of Sydney poorly.

A bit early, but here is where we are for Broncos vs Rabbitohs on Friday night.

Black line is pretty much sold out. Purple line selling. If these areas are pretty well filled without many no shows you'd expect 35-38k. however, we know how fickle the stadium members are, so I would say that if the game were tonight, the crowd would be 33-34k.

Anything from now is a bonus and we are well on the way to 40k+ weather permitting. It reminds me of 2014 - we weren't good that year, but the media raved about it every night and the game ended up selling out (was on Anzac day though). Crowd of 44k - it was the first year of GA bays and memberships. I hope the media bleats on about it every night.

The article says the warriors have approached the nrl about hosting it some years and been denied

the article quotes a current warriors player who said he would like nz to host it some times

along with not having a kiwi on the commission and the whole neglect of nz that’s insular

what happened to the idea of all clubs taking home games this year to nz to thank the warriors for their covid sacrifice

the nrl won’t be taking over the pacific as claimed whilst it pays lip service to nz
