I keep hearing this but I have my doubts

In the last 6 seasons Parra have finished 4th, last, 5th, 3rd, 6th, 4th. They have made a GF and made the 2nd week of semis 4 other times. Winning a comp is the ultimate criteria for success but apart from the obvious outlier, that is a successful period by any definition. By comparison we have finished in that same time 2nd, 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th and 6th. Obviously we managed to win 2 comps in that time but the last 3 years Parra have been more successful.

I'm not convinced that Parra winning the 2017 or 2019 comps as an example would have seen them have higher crowds than they got. Believing your team has a genuine chance at winning which has been the case for Parra a long time now is as motivating for fans as actually winning one.

Are you actually serious? You believe winning a grand final doesn’t help you pick up extra fans.

Panthers before this run had literally no fans outside of Penrith, now go to any school even in Parramatta and it’s at least a 50/50 split possibly more towards Penrith.

Also mentioned by another member. Melbourne. They basically would not have any fans in NSW had they not won.

A mate of mine in the ad industry worked on the NRL for a time back in 2015/16 and one of the stats he came across was that of all the Sydney clubs, Saints have the oldest demographic amongst supporters. So I guess they‘ve been waiting for them to drop off lol

He’s right. It was 50-60 y.o. around ten years ago. But success breeds new fans and new interest so it can change. Things come and go in waves. Kids will literally follow sides just because they’re winning. Having a competition with teams that are evenly matched ensures all teams grow at similar rates.

Saturday is sold out but tickets left for Friday and Sunday. With the success of the Dolphins I thought this would be the biggest MR yet. Tickets are bloody expensive. Starting at $50 For Fri/Sun. $40 for juniors!

That was quite the jump to a conclusion there.

If the Broncos win tomorrow night the media will lose their minds about this being the greatest TV viewing since walking on the moon. And potentially drive ticket sales. If we play like gronks we will still get a decent crowd (and ticket sales suggest that) but we might not draw into the Cowboys / Melbourne attendance territory.

I get all that, but promotion based on winning tends to lead to peaks and troughs rather than sustainable growth for the whole season and throughout the league. All 17 clubs cannot assuage the demand for wins on a regular basis.

Most encouraging crowd of the year so far was Tigers/Eels. Despite all the dismal rhetoric about both clubs in the lead-up, 29k fans were smart and committed enough to realize that an NRL game between two teams at the bottom of the ladder is perfectly capable of delivering a good game of football.

Looking ahead to the next (potentially) big club game in Sydney, what sort of numbers do we think the Rabbitohs and the Eels will draw in R12?

It's Souths' first and only home game at Allianz in 2023. It's for the Indigenous Round. It's a Friday 8:00pm timeslot.

These factors suggest it could be a big game, plus Souths are currently top 3 on the ladder, Eels 12th and rising.

I suspect Souths members and the SCG members will have their pick of circa 19,000 seats (as per the Roosters home games) in Tiers 1 + 2 of the eastern and western grandstands, plus Tier 4 of the western grandstand. Does anyone know how members' tickets are selling?

My...impression...is that general public ticket sales are slow, possibly because the game has had minimal promotion. At the moment there's plenty of general public tickets available in Tiers 1 + 2 of the northern and southern grandstands, and a handful in Tier 1 of the eastern grandstand. With no tickets on sale in Tier 4 of the eastern grandstand, it's hard to see the game selling more than perhaps 25,000-30,000 tickets.

What do people reckon? Anyone going?

Will get 30k being a friday night at a minimum unless its torrential rain.

Parra fans who couldn't go to the Roosters game a few weeks back due to it on a thursday will be curious to see the new stadium looks like and compare it to Commbank out of curiosity.

I would rather go to Allianz then Homebush more things to do pre & post match around Surry Hills and in the City in general then the hole at Homebush.

Any stats on what the uplift actually is of winning a comp? Maybe 10-20% in the winning season? Seems to me if form drops off in the following year of winning a comp the fans soon do as well. Probably need sustained 3-4 years of good form and premierships to see any sustained fan growth. Be interesting to see how many Panthers can hold on to when the inevitable happens.

The exercise has to stop there due to COVID

So discounting the 2019 roosters, of the other 21 premiers listed, 14 of them did increase their crowds the following year but not drastically with an average increase of 1732 or 12.48%. That only takes in to account teams that did increase, so using the full data set including teams that decreased the average turnaround the year after winning a comp is 505 or 4.82%

In regards to the 3 year outlook after winning a comp, using the teams up until 2016 Sharks which have full data sets not impacted by COVID, of the 19 premiers in that time frame, 12 had a worse average in the 3rd year after winning a comp than the year they won it with an average drop off across the 19 teams including those that did increase of 1361 or 6.94%.

So yeah, at this stage I'm willing to say that the notion of Parra being some crowds powerhouse if only they could win a comp is BS and that crowd growth is more tied to being consistently competitive as opposed to actually winning the comp.

As i have noticed in last couple of years. Behind the goal posts the teams playing in that match they bunch all the supporters into a bay and give them signs to hold up.

Then once the game is over its get rotated out to the new teams.

Nah each team has a designated supporters bay this year. For example, For Friday I'm sitting in the Broncos section, Saturday Dolphins and Sunday Titans.
