QLD’s best player last year in the decider was Ponga whose club team won 6 games the entire season.

It’s also pretty well known that during that period QLD trusted their players to get the job done regardless of their club form.

You don’t think Slater, Cronk, Smith and Thurston would have still been picked if one of them moved to the Tigers? Come off it. Ben Hunt’s position was never in doubt despite playing for the Dragons.

Freddy f**ked up by lazily packing his side with Penrith players expecting them just to get the job done because they’re successful in club land, rather than actually looking at their individual games to assess whether they have the right skill set the succeed at Origin.

Lets look at this series as a whole.

Game 1

Picks Hynes on the bench with no plan for him
Picks a Bulldogs prop in TPJ never seen again.
plays NSW best forwards in Martin and Murray on the bench

Game 2

Decides 2 hookers are needed instead of a Utility. Yet plays that hooker at centre
picks a Tigers prop - plays him for 12 mins because he can't keep up
Once again Martin and Murray on the bench.

Now decides that a centre and Hooker are both needed on the bench.

A centre is needed instead of going back to the previously blooded Staggs or going to Pensini who is on the way up coming off the GF.

Goes to the side who is in the bottom 4, To a player that last month was being shopped around.

That goes with Gutho at centre in 2020
Talakai selection last year

Amongst other puzzling decisions, lack of a plan is the issue not selecting guys from successful teams

Yes it really is a nonsense argument. Player in bad team must be worse than player in good team.

Best is like 5th choice centre and people are melting down. Latrell, Trbo, Graham all injured and Burton would have been picked ahead him. edit: I was looking at the wrong team, forgot Burton wasn't picked at centre after all. meh much of a muchness to me as far as this game goes.

I forgive people for not watching Knights games but Jacob Saifiti (and his brother) has been one of our worst players this year and made the bench. Now that deserves some meltdowns. Sure he's done the job before but he is an absolute plodder this year, barely deserves to be in 1st grade. Better than his brother at least I guess.

They won 8 in a row picking 4 - 5 spine players that will almost all be Immortals and some damn good props, too. Actually they often did the complete opposite of what you said? Picked players they knew they could rely on to perform at that level even if they were going busted for their NRL club.

You literally said their 2 selections from Newcastle were poor choices then said NSW did the right thing.

Who in that QLD side was playing in a poor side? Cows, Storm and Broncos were good and hence were still good in Origin

Cook has performed better at centre than Guffo.......... this is the level of coach we are dealing with

To be fair the whole shopping Best around rumour was a figment of Weidler’s imagination.

Maybe so but on pure numbers it is a poor selection 78% tackle rate, That clearly doesn't count the poor reads.

Compare that to Pensini or the test player Burton

I never disagreed that Freddy’s selections and substitutions weren’t woeful. I disagreed with your point that players should be picked on the basis of whether their club side is successful or not. It means nothing and we’ve already proven in games 1 & 2 that it’s a bad strategy as just because players look good in a certain club structure it doesn’t mean they’ll perform as well out of it or have the right skills for Origin football.

Wtf is Gutho's role?

You could cop him at fullback given Teddy is horrid now, Trent from Punchy, Turbo and Fatrell are injured and you can't have a man with no chin play Origin. But actually what is he supposed to achieve on the bench? And he takes the spot of a prop when we've been bashed in two games.

This might be the worst NSW side I've ever seen

The only thought I have is Teddy faking an injury in camp

Dropping Luai is a strange one. He did himself no favours with being sent-off in the dying seconds and his post-match antics, but he certainly hasn't been the worst performer for NSW.
I would have dropped him based on that alone

What? I only said Jacob Saifiti was a poor choice. I said NSW's centre options are thin because the first three choices are injured.

Ok, let's pick their whitewash team.

2010 QLD 3 - 0

Willie Tonga, Thurston, Matt Scott - Cowboys 15th
Thaiday, Folau, Lockyer, Teo, Yow Yeh - Broncos 10th
Hannant - Bulldogs 13th
Dave Taylor, Ben Lowe - Souths 9th

Storm & Broncos were obviously good during that time where a bunch of their players came from. Cowboys made the finals 4/8 years, with 3 of the years being 15th, 12th, 15th. Doesn't mean Thurston was shit - he only missed a few games in those 3 years.

Who is more likely to not look like a deer in headlights during Origin.

Someone who has done the job in finals, across a few years

Or someone that has struggled to be consistent and is picked off a good 2-4 weeks of footy?

NSW goes for the latter and the result is the same

I think he takes over the role of sitting on the bench and coming on in the last 12 minutes to cover a position he has never played since under 8s

As an aside people are kidding themselves if they thought Freddy was going to drop Tedesco for a dead rubber game in NSW, lol. It will (should) be his last game for NSW. He's earned a farewell.

The same Willie Tonga that won a comp with the Dogs in 2004?

Thurston who played in the same side or was a GF player in 2005?

Matt Scott was in that Cows 2005 side.

Dogs made the GF in 2009. Hannant was picked from that.

So none were picked only based on their performances in shit teams?

I’d much rather put my money on a team with players who know what it’s like to be playing in a side that might be losing the forward battle and momentum against them but they can still produce something when their side is struggling.

Despite playing in the last two grand finals most of the Penrith players looked like absolute deer-caught in the headlights in game 1 and had no answers.

I’m definitely not saying Id predominately pick players from struggling clubs, but I wouldn’t pick players just because they play for a top team either. We need to pick them based on their skills and whether they have the right ones for Origin which we don’t do. QLD have always gotten that right.

I'm gonna pick Minecraft Steve at centre, because I got high
I'm gonna pick a fullback on the bench, because I got high.
My selections are all messed up and I know why (why man)?

Cause I got high
Because I got high
Because I got high

I'm gonna pick Downhill Skier Moses, because I got high
I'm gonna put Cookie at centre, because I got high
Now the series is gone and I know why (why man)?

Cause I got high
Because I got high
Because I got high

I'm gonna pick a lazy Saifiti, because I got high,
I'm gonna pick old man Walker, because I got high,
Now I'm lined up at Centrelink and I know why...

Cause I got high
Because I got high
Because I got high.

What's Gutho going to do off the bench, other than have a great seat to watch the game. Which he can't even leave at half time if the game turns out to be crap. Which it probably will be.
He can't even refund his ticket.

Prefer Gutho playing on Saturday if I'm being honest. Moses too for that matter.
