Almost like he’d have been better off not locking in a 5 year extension and talking to ch9 before doing his masters (news ltd) bidding lol

best thing that could happen Imo is if a fta/streaming All in one wins nrl rights, it takes away the competition between fta and ptv and means we should get a saturday night fta game.
Hindsight is a wonderful thing

it makes people who sit at home look like a genius

Nines extension wasnt done until Dec 2021.

Dec 2021 would have been a more appropriate time to do the whole tv-media rights deal for 2023-2027. Instead the NRL signed off an extension with Fox until 2027, back in May 2020, at the heart of the pandemic.

Since then the media landscape has changed. Stan Sport launched in Feb 2021 and Paramount Plus came to light in Aug 2021.

Kinda feels like the NRL missed out on potential bidding tension from Nine/Stan, Ten/Paramount plus and Fox, hence the value of the rights deal could have been higher.. The AFL took advantage of Stan and Paramount in Sept 2022, and stayed with the status quo of Seven and Fox.

Next time, the NRL has to sign off on all the deals together at the same time, rather than doing it half arsed and prematurely.. Sign off on the deal as late as possible, like at some point in 2026, just in case if there is any more changes in the media landscape.

Allegedly Greenburg and Abdo told him to wait. But he signed with fox anyway. You do have to ask why? Surely he must have known stan and paramount were coming and would be keen to launch with nrl as its primary attraction? Something stinks!

Coming from a horse racing background, I don't think PVL realised how important a tv deal is to a football code until he heard what the AFL got.

It's one thing to get the game back on the field and another to sign off on a long term deal.

The NRL is on the way up in every area, with the aggressive attitude to expansion so will the TV rights. And Vlandy's is absolutely the kind of bloke that will be champing at the bit to make up for last time.
Have spent the last two days in Sydney`s lower North Shore, seen the usual gaggles of school kids with their boaters, one was wearing a maroon`s jumper though, looked great such an iconic jumper and the boater really made a nice contrast. :p
Last night had dinner in aspirational Lane Cove, saw one bloke sitting in a restaurant with a retro Bulldogs jumper on and a family in the mall with their kids all in Parra gear. Things are on the up, crikey if we`re not careful League will become respectable again.

Nice!

It's awesome to see the game on the up again. It makes me think more and more that AFL haven't eaten into RL at all in NSW and QLD. Both the NRL and AFL just seem to have eaten into RU over the last 20 years.

Lane Cove Tigers and Kuringgai Cubs reformed a few years ago and both clubs are booming. There is hope on the North Shore still.

I'm reading Black Box Thinking atm and his explanations make him a poster boy for cognitive dissonance.

Not only that, we can open negotiations up for the next deal, in 2024 or one year/18mths away. The AFL are still on their 2023-2024 deal, so we can do the same. open early negotiations with 3+ years to go. So really we are talking about the new deal, when it's almost upon us to negotiate. If the NRL can put a 10mth program with pre season action, say World Nines, with proper season and a World International Invitational ( WIIT) tournament ( in conjunction with Poms) call it Hemisphere champions with a play off, this action to finish in late November ( when TV rating period finish 30 nov) that's a solid program that could bring in $550 to $615 million p/a or yearly.
