That’s their problem. They have too many teams, their games go for too long and their game is shite. It’s a reason they shouldn’t have 20 teams but will anyway. Fact is we can easily accommodate a 9th and tenth game if we locate the new clubs correctly and take advantage of appropriate game times. We easily outrate them on tv now and can really punish them further if we get it right.

Not saying it isn't their problem but the ratings we see only tell part of the story.
Hopefully we get more accurate data from Kayo to help with discussions as to where to put the new teams

Yep. They could never go that without conflicting time schedules. Their problem and unsolvable unless they move to halves and shorten their goddam awful games.

They could do it now. They just wont fixture sunday night or monday nights. Players and fans object. The AFL rejected both out of hand citing attendance as a big issue.

They're going to always have 1 to 2 clashes unless they start games at 12pm. However, fewer people are watching then. Prime time slots is where the money is at. The NRL can have 5 out of 7 nights covered if it wants.

Also the NRL has never had live back to back FTA games in prime time. The closest they had was the Friday delayed game. If on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday you air two back to back games, you can target 3-4 metros in that block. E.g. Dolphins vs Rabbitohs followed by Broncos vs Storm. Suddenly that 1 million national rating becomes closer to 1.5 million across a 4 hour block.

While not identical, the NRL did kind of do this smartly - the live game in Queensland was different to the Live game in NSW - which basically guaranteed the Broncos and FTA game every week, and then the opposite game was delayed into the other market.

Thursday night, Friday early, Friday night, Saturday arvo, Saturday twilight, Saturday night, Sunday arvo, Sunday twilight, Sunday night, Monday night.

10 games. No overlaps.

The only problem with this is how would you schedule a Monday night game in with a Thursday night game? That would be incredibly difficult. I recall the last time we had Monday night games, the teams playing the Monday night fixture were absolutely cannon fodder the following week

A 7pm Monday NRL game is over by 8:50pm-ish. A 7pm Monday AFL game is over by 9:30pm-ish. That 40 minute difference is the difference between getting home at 10pm or 11pm with work/school the next day. I can see why the AFL won't do it but the NRL can and already has.

That second delayed game finished at 11:30 and was pumped full of ads. It did boost the early slot ratings but viewers dropped off for the second due to the late finish, excess ads and viewers finding out the score. The NRL has never had back to back live games in prime time and it is a massive potential money spinner.

Teams playing on Sundays right now back up the following Saturday. Teams playing on Mondays would be scheduled into one of the three Sunday games. It's the exact same turnaround length.

I guess the question people should ask is how many of Foxtel/Kayo's 4 million+ subscriptions are driven by NRL viewership. When you consider that we get about 5 to 6 million total ratings a round, that'sabout 3 to 4 million likely unique viewers across FTA and subscription. I'd suggest it's at least 1.5 million NRL driven subscriptions. Most likely over 2 million.

Hence my reply earlier, I doubt SA has many Kayo Subscribers. No need for AFL anyway

You would have to go in to conferences I think with rotated timeframes.

I’m not a huge fan of conferences but it makes it easier with highly complex schedules and travel factors.

Thatll start to change if Fox keeps pressuring the AFL to end the live match guarantees to teams outside of Victoria. Already 3 games a year are delayed for each.

Long time wook, you're doing a service bro. Have you looked into finding the SL ratings from England yet, they're about at times.

I have and folks UK ratings and crowds at me periodically - evidently i gained a few followers during the world cup from the UK. Even a french dude from time to time. Its just so much damned work keeping up with everything sometimes, but definitely something im looking at adding to the feed next season.

Another reason the comparisons are good as a guide but don't tell the full story

Theres no real one to one comparison to be made anyway. Whther its time slot, match length, overlaps, local or national fta coverage, or even estimating streaming, its just not the same from sport to sport.

And then on top of that you have to factor in the skill of your negotiators, broadcaster finances and willingness to spend, the ability to find compromises without giving up too much.

No one is yet that is the thing.

Even when AFL does reach $550 with contra. Ch7 will be covering $180m of that.

One day it will happen but we will be paying $60 a month for Kayo. Normal Foxtel packages will increase to cover such a thing
its 593 mill with contra
& 50 mill on top with telstra
