When did I say “trust the coach”?

I’ve said in certain situations that we should trust our system, when talking about replacing different players, but I really don’t recall saying “trust the coach”

It was an interresting read, especially in relation to training and how they set NRL standards for the lower grades, including Jersey Flegg and SG Ball squads, in all training tests so that the players in those squads are acclimatised to NRL intensity before they make it to the NRL. Its thought that is what has helped the entire club develop its reputation as being the fittest.

Analysis: The three-time defending champions have once again lost a number of key players to rival clubs in the offseason, notably Stephen Crichton and Spencer Leniu.

Crichton’s shoes will be especially hard to fill, proving last year that he was one of the best centres in not just the competition but the world.

Tyrone Peachey will likely be given first crack considering he’s been in the system for some time and is generally pretty reliable when his number has been called. However, youngster Paul Alamoti has plenty of ability and will be knocking the door down for selection at some stage this season.


Lindsay Smith enjoyed his best season in 2023 but with Leniu’s departure, there’ll be a little more pressure on him to perform.

The number 14 jersey is an interesting battle. Soni Luke started played 20 games off the bench in 2023 but wasn’t selected during the finals season with Penrith electing to go with Jack Cogger in 14 as insurance for Jarome Luai. Cogger has since joined Newcastle.

Luke Sommerton, Daine Laurie and Brad Schneider are all bench options as well.

The new salary cap rules for the supplementary list players seems vague though. Clubs have a supplementary player cap of $650,000, for at least four, maximum six players, that are paid $80,000. Plus a bonus of $3,000 for any NRL game.

So with $80,000 x 4 totaling $320,000 of the $650,000 cap, I assume the $3,000 per game extra they receive for any games played would come out of the remaining $330K supplementary cap, rather than out of the main $11.25 cap?

If so, we could afford to keep Sommerton on the supplementary contract and still be able to afford to pay him $3k a game for the whole season if needed.
