At least we have some test quality tail end batsmen. The only part of our team that's test quality.

Comparing Hughes to Trott & Amla is fairly laughable. Hughes' average is more comparable to someone like Ian Healy.

When he is batting in the same position as Trott and Amla then he has to deliver performances comparable to those players. It's a sad indictment on australian cricket that Hughes has been the man to bat in our most important position, we need a guy whose numbers can be compared to those players and come across as at least respectable in comparison.

Seriously, how the hell did you soapophobes put up with being this shit for the best part of 20 years? Or does the ingrained Pommy pessimism help with not being too dissapointed? It's more frustrating than watching Peter Wallace and Scott Prince trying to work out what the f**k to do 10 meters out from the try line.

It's not a question of being test quality or not. It's a question of being one of the 6 best batsmen your country has. Watson and Hughes certainly are.

It is about being test quality. And they aren't, evidenced by their mediocre averages in a batsmen friendly era with shorter boundaries & more favourable pitches.

You'd expect even average batsmen to jag a century once every year.

I'm just gutted we have to wait 3 years to play Australia in a Test series. We'd be our best chance to win a series against them in the last 25 years or however long its been.

Hughes got 81 not out IN THE LAST TEST. Even with his last 2 failures he's probably been our best top 6 batsman with that score alone so far in these ashes.

You can't drop someone if there's noone better to replace them.

Hughes, Watson, Khawaja and Rogers are in the team because there is noone better.

Yes I mean the last time we played your batsman looked scared of Pattinson.

Wato, you're dead right, but your argument will be fruitless against that dickhead BM.

Hughes has struggled to have an average that rivals a competent number 7 or 8 batsmen for quite some time now against quality opposition.

He is not test quality sadly. Neither is Watson, Warner or Cowan imo.

But they'll keep getting picked.

Yea sadly we lack any quality players to replace them with thou. I was a huge fan of Watson's a few years back but his last 12-18 months have proven that it was form and not class that took him the the AB medal. I would like to see Jordan Silk get a go at opening the batting in 12 or so months time, I have not seen a lot of him but from what I have seen he looks like a quality young player.

Watson and Hughes will know the clocks ticking and both need big innings over the next few test matches to solidify their places in the side, I can't see the selectors sticking by them past these ashes series if they fail to fire. Hughes especially needs a 100 his yet to get one since his recall and if he does not have one by the end of the ashes that will be about 17 tests without a 100.
