You're probably right, but unless Stoinis takes a bag full of Shield wickets, I don't see how it's justified.

Selectors using cheap BBL wickets as some kind of justification is about par for the course though.

Look, they are taking an all rounder. That’s just a fact.

Would you prefer it to be BigRigBigDickRigDick Stoinis, or Mitchell f**king Marsh?

In the absence of an option C I guess Stoinis. Then after that failure he can be crossed out as well.

Sometimes people just need to jump in fire to find out why they're being told not to jump in the fire.

I think the best option C would be Faulkner as his swing bowling is best suited to England. But he hasn’t played a FC game in forever and seems to be a bit of a forgotten man.

He did play his only test in England and handled himself quite well.

What's the verdict on the new kid? Patterson?

Pretty terrific test for Aust, but hard to know what to make of it because it's pretty much a Sri Lanka B side, and their A side is pretty terrible

FMD.

This test match has hurt our Ashes chances, Khawaja & Starc just bought themselves time when the pressure was largely off.

Particularly Khawaja who did the same thing last summer.

He’s a good, honest batsmen. Nothing spectacular, but he plays genuine cricket shots & looks nice and calm out there.

Done enough to be on the Ashes tour, that’ll be the real test.

Haha Mel calling Starc's bag of wickets "delivering when it counts." Definitely, towelling up a truly awful, and injury-decimated Sri Lankan side after being smashed for about 2 years...definitely delivering in the crunch!

Scored a ton last summer when the pressure was off too. Other than that ton against Pakistan he’s never really stepped up for Australia.

This days play hurt our Ashes chances.

Right, cos having Starc and Uzi find confidence is bad for Australia... FMD

Having Smith back will take the pressure off him having to be the best batsman. Hopefully he’ll just play his strokes and he’ll be right.

We know that Khawaja doesn’t play well outside of Australia. He found form last year at Sydney and then did nothing in South Africa.

He averages almost double the runs in Australia than overseas.

He’s probably only played one great innings for Australia.

Sorry but he just doesn’t perform under pressure.

Re Starc

He’s totally unsuited to Edgbaston. It’s not a mistake England scheduled the first test there, they know we’ll fall for the trap of playing Starc on a surface that demands accuracy.

Starc should play a part in the Ashes, but not the early tests.

He had Smith all last summer & only performed in the 5th test.

I’d put money on him averaging below 30 for the Ashes.

Horses for courses selections is something Australia has failed at dismally, I’m surprised it’s controversial to point that out.

We always back form over conditions, that might’ve worked when we had one of the greatest teams ever, but when you have senior guys who clearly don’t perform in certain conditions they shouldn’t be a lock for selection.

It’s not a bad thing per se that Khawaja & Starc did well today, it’s a bad thing that it gets them automatic selection for conditions they might struggle in. We just need to be smarter with our selections.

Yeah we should play Lasanage or Harris instead. Who have never delivered for Aus and I can’t see them doing it on a tour of England.
