This has to be a Hughes-Watson opening stand record. Don't recall them getting past 100 together before today.

That was one slow over. SA didn't have the fight to at least have another crack. Smith and Tahir had a chat almost every ball lol.

If we can keep this going straight after lunch we can have the saffies beaten mentally imo

I think he has been a bit fortunate hitting the ball in the air through covers

Hughes looks pretty solid though, he normally looks like he can get out at any time but looks like he has worked hard on changing his technique
He's gone a long way from the batter he was 2 years ago.

And this is another example of why I've been in the minority calling for him to be given a proper go. Yes he has some minor technical issues that flare up at times, but he has more talent than any young batsman we've produced since at least Clarke. His eye and his timing are incredibly good and he has an ability to punish bowlers when they stray more often than most batsmen.

He's way way way too talented to drop after one poor test like some were calling for. And we don't have the depth to make young players wait until they're 30 to debut like we did a few years ago with Hussey and others.

This era is much more like the 80s and early 90s. Players like Hughes, Khawaja and Cummins have to be thrown in before they're ready like Langer , Warne and co were all those years ago.

The payoff will be in a couple years when all that young talent will mature at the same time and help us get back to where we belong. Number one.

Edit: As for the Test itself, lets not get too excited. Last test we were in an even more commanding position and it all went to shit.

So glad Hughes is making runs, he really is a key component to our rebuild of the test side IMO. He has worked so hard on his technique and it really shows. Granted it is a road but he is still facing a top class attack..

That was a great session..just about perfect considering what happened last weekend..

The next session is the one we need to win though..These 2 need to kick on to big tons because as we saw in the Seth Efrikan innings wickets can fall in bunches..

This is a good deck but you have to get your eye in before going hard..

It would be nice to see one of these 2 go onto something really big now that they are seeing it so well..

I allowed the missus to commandeer the TV to watch some shite or other. She'd better be done with it soon or I'll... I'll... sit here and sulk.

Catching the highlights now.

Some sweet shots by both Hughes and Watson.

A bit of pride back in Australian cricket after that last innings of hot cat shit.
