3rd Test: Australia v India @ Gabba Brisbane Dec 14-18, 2024

Crazy thought: should India declare now?

play this out: Australia have to set them a total quickly and declare to give themselves enough time to roll them tomorrow to win. They’d likely bat about 15-20 overs and score about 100-120. This gives India about 70-75 overs to score 320ish and win the game.

Well actually with all the rain delays there will probably only be about 50 overs tomorrow.

Is the Bison hurt too? Seems weird he didn’t trundle in for a few more?

poor day for Australia

he had a niggle leading up to the match and was OK to bat but possibly wouldn't bowl, looks like he is still carrying some sort of injury

Not with one bowler down (two really Lyon ineffective), unpredictable overs left, gives india opportunity to win in a couple of sessions basically. The wickets isnt doing anything terrible

From Indias POV - would it be worth declaring and making the Aussies decide if they go for it or not? As you said, they probably would play it fairly safe but was just good for thought.

Game is essentially over now they’ve avoided the follow on.

It's just about the only way they're a shot at winning tbh. They might be happy with a draw, ofc. But if they wanna win then yep, declare and take the risk.

There's still two innings to get through in a day, so anything but a draw is obviously long odds.

The flipside I suppose is they get bowled out in an over anyway. But putting it on us isnt a bad idea

Khawaja, Marnus and probably McSweeney with most to lose going in to tomorrow... Another single figure dismissal by any/all of them in an otherwise pointless innings further dents their confidence and beats them up psychologically ahead of Boxing Day....

The bowlers, especially Lyon are replaceable. Even the quicks who have become legends as a group have very good players ready to step up.

It is our batting that is faaarked. Half the top 6 is in mediocre form and it is hard to think of 1 bloke banging down the door let alone the 5 we need to replace the 30-somethings.

very interesting comments here from Boof and he's an ex coach so he'd have a bit of a clue

It isn't like there are any batters come through shield putting pressure on the current top 6. Bancroft/Harris/Burns/Renshaw have had the last 3 years to consistently make runs and haven't. No other batter in shield either has been challenging. When Green got dropped from Australia he made 100 nearly every shield game while no one else got runs

have to agree - think someone like Nesser has been hard done by when injured front liners get in ahead of him while he is 12th man and then when they are out injured they pick someone from shield to go straight in

Would like to think test worthy batsmen are killing it at shield level. I think more than 1 ton by this point in the season is not asking too much. We have exactly 4 blokes who have more than 1 shield century this season. One of them is an incumbent (Carey) and the other 3:

Konstas
Hunt
Inglis

I do rate Konstas but if Hunt and Inglis are our 2nd and 3rd best domestic batsmen we have serious problems with our batting depth.

Head and, Marnus were average Shield players, well nothing screaming out to be picked in the test side

Smith came into the side as a leg spinner. Warner was a white ball boy.

Point being, if those guys can go to another level (eventually) and have a long international career then those guys we mentioned can as well. I think we will be fine, just maybe need to be a bit patient . Love to give Konstas another year of Shield/red ball, before test cricket

The shield is an average competition. Impossible for it to produce superstar players. We're gonna have to hope some of the leading bats kick on at a higher level, because there's not much value in CAs molested shield comp IMO

Do we really need to go over this for another summer? It's not the 70's the captain isn't out there swinging his dick around. The coach and system pick the fields and bowlers
If a captain lets a coach and a system set the fields and pick the bowlers the he has no business being skipper in the first place. Can this game and team get anymore corporate???
