Well lets have them...................this should be good.

as already pointed out, temperment, he had a terrible knack of spitting the dummy and it sorely effected his leadership on the paddock. I also think he had problems with accountability, very rarely on the paddock did he put his hand up and accept his mistakes, his mistakes often were followed by a rant or spray at a touchie, ref, or another team mate. I also think he failed to dominate origin for a prolonged period of time, he had some great games but 2005 was the only series he really dominated to the level blokes like Lewis, Meninga, Langer and Daley did. His sportsmanship also leaves ALOT to be desired

he hasnt done a whole since the Knights GF win in 2001... thats nigh on 6 years of nothing major at club level, not a notch id think the GOAT would have on his belt

I was born in 1982 so I didn't really conciously see any League until the late 80s. Everything I saw Mal do was stamped with greatness, the sort of stuff you don't see from your average player. He created inspiration in any team he played in Captaining Australia and Queensland aswell as Canberra to 5 Grand Finals and 3 premierships. He brought more to the table than just skill and ability. You can't coach what Mal had.

Interesting that Mal went on the 82 Kangaroo tour but was behind Cronin and Rogers as centres, and in the 86 tour was a replacement forward - Kenny, a specialist 5/8, was moved to centre to accomodate Lewis, and was still preferred to Meninga. This was of course during the time of Mal being at his peak - before he broke his arm in 87. I don't dispute Mal being a great, but there were plenty ahead of him.

So you have pointed out temprement, you THINK he had problems with accountability ???

The spray to a touchie was after the touchie made a massive mistake that cost them the game. Not the ideal reaction, that is a given. he failed to dominate origin for prolonged time, I think you will find lewis is the only player to dominate origin, the other 3 did not dominate, in that respect lewis is alone, that is a given.

Essentially you have stated his temprement, Lewis had no better temprement than Johns, but let me guess that's ok because he had passion for QLD. & your perception of lack of accountability.

Pleeeease

temperment..you see players mouthing off each week..the dummy spit came after blowing a 14 pt lead in a GF qualifying game..who wouldnt!
the spray at the touchie..the touchie was wrong..plain and simple in an important game.. .bet the touchie wont make that mistake again..and he apologised for it.his team mates knew they did wrong.... and if your captain cant give you a rocket then who can.. im sure those of us who play any sport have copped something from their captain/team mates.played with his heart on his sleeve..thats all he did and tried to bring his teammates along with him

So club level is stronger then SOO hey?

Just remember Wally dominated SOO under the 5 metre rule, Johns didn't dominate as much as Fittler did under the 10 metre rule, that's is why I could never list Johns as the greatest i've seen. And i hate Lewis!

Ron

That comment was in response to riader 69's comment about club form. Not saying in any way shape or form that is held in any higher regard than SOO form.

SAAB

In comparison to joeys club form, I would say it is a fair comment.

You asked me to name weakness's in his game and i have
he had a terrible temperment, that hurt both his individual performances and his team's performance, he lacked leadership quailities, he struggled to accept accountability for his own mistakes, often prefering to blame others, had no sportsmanship qualities what so ever, durability was another concern, he has been a dominate half in an era sadly lacking quality halves, durability was another concern, the closest thing to a contender he has had was Kimmorley and he is rubbish, however not rubbish enough to keep johns out of a half back spot for several years...

johns is one of the best players to play the game, but to be the best these are qualities i think you must have. Johns lacked them, there for

They were class players ;-)

Johnsy, Lewis might not have made the semis all that often in his time in the NSWRL (1990 he did) but SFA is rather harsh.
He had some great games for the Broncos

Raider I don't think his spitting can contribute to him not being the greatest ever lol

why not? if we go purely off ability he was no where near, when it comes to the best of's he was a jack of all trades and master of none. He like all great players could do everything you could want, but as far as running games go, daley, fittler, kenny all beat him there, long kicking, stuart had his measure, short kicking langer beat him hands down, passing Cliffy lyons amongst others had him covered, vision lewis, kenny and stuart has him...

i mean what aspect of his game can you honestly say he was unmatched by a peer? None is the answer, and granted alot of the greats are the same, so for me i go by the other aspects of this game, the hair spliters and those are their charactor on field, leadership and sportsmanship... all of which were nigh on non exsistant in johns

he is a great player, no doubts
but he is not the best ever. Not a chance
