There are not minimum standards for clothing quality in Australia set out by the Govt. The industry have some minimums but none are mandatory or enforceable. There are things like pilling and colourfastness that can be tested and if say colour leaks too much retailers may voluntarily recall them to avoid getting cleanup bills etc. So long as care and content labelling are present on all garments and they are fit for purpose as per the Trade Practices Act then the actual quality of the garment is not taken into consideration as it should have been sighted and approved by the Buyer.

Hmmm. Clothing is obviously different to machinery etc that I buy.

It would seem that the clothing industry here is "self regulated".
I find it quite alarming actually. I would have hoped that enforcable standards would be applicable to atleast some things. eg the flamability of kids clothing especially pyjamas etc. I find it quite scary actually. What's to stop a parent from unwittingly dressing their kids in clothing that will ignite easilt upon exposure to an open flame in the open fireplace at home etc.

We weren't talking about PJ's for kids, we were talking about garments in general and that is safety not quality. Flammability for Kids PJ's is a mandatory safety standard enforced by the ACCC.

Not true sorry, I work in QA for an Aust Retailer, the Aust company is responsible for the quality/safety of the merchandise. You see samples, you commit to the order, you are then responsible for what you bring in. The only comeback the retailer has is if the order doesn't match the quality of the sample you approved.

My bad. There was a typo in my post where I did a cut and paste.

What you said is what I mean and I agree with the previous post in regards to the govt setting the standards. But each company also have their own standards and branding.

So you can say made in China is bad quality but you should be blaming the companies who are willing to sell the product at that quality not the Made in China brand.

In my industry, the ANZS or CE, whichever applicable if not both, sets the minimum safety requirements also. ANZS would not allow a machine to be bought in to the country which does not have adequate protection for the user against the electrical components of the machine for example. Another example would be the use of materials in a building. It stops rogue builders from putting in materials that are not "fit for purpose". Safety glass for balustrading and doors is governed by ANZS 2208 (i think) for example.
As I have said, it obviously differs from industry to industry. The clothing industry is obviously very different.

in terms of whether china (or whatever country it is at the time) makes garbage ... yeh, I agree, the quality is a product of what the owning company is willing to put into it - and yeah the quality of stuff from china has improved as companies who want to make better stuff have shifted there .... but generally companies who are setting up businesses in somewhere that has low wages (like has been the case with china over the last decade) are doing so to save money and often in the process cut quality to "save money" .... I have noticed a drop off in the quality of lots of brands of clothing - sports gear like Nike, addidas, etc are far worse quality than 7 or so years ago.

I am not saying its the chinese's fault (altho there are some poor standards in some areas of manufacturing there) - but when companies setup there its generally to save money and the quality of the inputs probably head downhill, so the output suffers too.

The last decade it was china - I remember my mum saying years ago you wouldn't have touched sh*t from japan, then japan turned into a manufacturing giant with high quality standards .... its probably moving to India now ... then to vietnam ... will probably end up in africa one day .... we'll run out of countries with cheap labour one day

At least they aren't made in china. Chinese made stuff is usually dodgy quality.

I remember back in the sixties when "made in Japan" basically meant "stuck together with chewing gum"; but things change. I remember buying a guitar in the early eighties that had "crafted in Japan" stamped on it - and who could argue?
Chinese quality has improved out of sight in recent years. There are some great bargains to be had on very good quality items from China - particularly musical instruments, I believe.

Can you still use last years B&G army and Season ticket cards to get a discount until this years have bean posted out?

What discount?

I was discussing this with Chris at the BGA store. While last year, STH and B&G Army members received a 10% discount on all purchases, this year the only get a $20 voucher to use once during the year.

The only club that as far as I can see still gets their discount at the BGA Store is the Eels Supporters club.

So the $20 vouchers replace the 10% discount??

lol so it pretty much means that I'll purchase from the store once a year. If the pricing at footy heaven is anything to go off there's no way I'd shop there regularly at full price.
