Pip, I learnt a long time ago that lifestyle is way more important than real estate.
I semi retired a few years ago, not because of age as I'm way too young for that, but for peace of mind.
This place is for hoots, I do know that you get that. Nearly every post you do gives me a good chuckle.
Now I'm feeling beer/philosophy, and I'm not talking to chick's.
There's only one answerr for that,
Cook some pizza.

The Brisbane Tigers have heated up the expansion date by declaring they would instantly become one of the NRL’s wealthiest four clubs and could field a team in three years.

The Tigers are undaunted by the Federal Government’s push for the competition’s 18th team to come from Papua New Guinea and believe they could field a competitive first grade team in 2026.

Club powerbrokers Shane Richardson, one of rugby league’s most experienced executives, and Shane Edwards (formerly Broncos CEO) have done a lap of Sydney, meeting with five NRL clubs plus broadcast executives to present their case for inclusion.

Industry experts claim an 18th team is worth an extra $375 million in the NRL’s next TV rights deal and Papua New Guinea surged to early favouritism following the promise of federal government backing.
Bids from New Zealand, Perth and North Sydney are also expected.

The Tigers, who have a profitable leagues club at Coorparoo, have declared they have cash reserves of $25 million, total assets of $57.4 million and equity of $52.4 million which would make them one of the most financially sound teams in the competition.

They believe they can tackle the threat of the Springfield-based Brisbane Lions head on in the Ipswich corridor and also nourish the Toowoomba and Logan City regions.

Like the Redcliffe-based Dolphins they have ancient roots in Brisbane rugby league stretching back to when the club was formed in 1933 and they believe they can grow the game from the bottom up rather than being a created team which works from the top down.

“We have a strong financial base and have been successful on and off the field and that enables us to contribute to the game in a way none of the other clubs who are vying for a licence could,’’ bid chairman Edwards said.

Rugby league is under siege west of Brisbane due to a dollar charged assault from the AFL but Edwards declared “we are not afraid.’’

“We will take up the challenge. We see it as a positive that they have seen the benefits of that region and we have been out putting programs in that region for some time now. We don’t have the money to compete with the AFL but we have the ground support to keep growing the game.’’

Far from feeling their club would cannibalise the Broncos, Dolphins or Titans, Edwards believes the figures show that they would grow the game in the same way the Dolphins have done this season.

The Tigers have noted that the Broncos signed more than 8000 new members this year and with the Dolphins recruiting more than 30,000 this means around 40,000 new members have been drawn to the game.

“People thought a second team would cannibalise the Broncos but the Dolphins have drawn new fans and the Broncos have responded really well to the challenge so it proves the Brisbane market is not saturated. They have grown the game and Brisbane is still under-represented.’’

The Dolphins have noted that despite the presence of a second Brisbane team, Suncorp Stadium was vacant for nine weeks of the season so they could fill some of that space.

Due to the presence of the Wests Tigers, Easts would not be able to use their time honoured tiger as a mascot.

They have adopted the Firehawk but have not totally locked in to using it.

Let’s be honest brisbane tigers would be a stronger club than any other choice

rugby league is spoiled for choice

if it was me I would add the easy / heartland clubs like nz2 png and Brisbane 3 to get to 20

that would provide a strong platform to go into the remaining afl states in terms of player depth, finances and momentum

Again no one is denying they dont have the resources and infrastructure in place. Same as say Bears in Gosford.

The question still remains does the NRL want to grow its competition and footprint with genuine expansion or keep on consolidating its already reached markets? That will decide where team 18 -20 ends up.

You could’ve made that argument about the dolphins yet here we are

would brisbane tigers make the nrl stronger ? Majorily so

if the arlc hasn’t sat on it’s ass for so long we would already have these clubs in the comp

Not really, everyone could see Brisbane2 was a no brainer and has been for 25 years. But now having got Brisbane2 the need for Brisbane3 is much diminished. Especially as we have some strong other options that actually grow the game.

Depends how you define stronger.

No argument there, Crushers, Reds and Adelaide should never have been cut. RL In Australia would be in a very different place now if that had been the case.

They won’t announce club 19 &20 without knowing what the 2033- tv deal is. unless of course they get radical and sign a ten year tv deal, in which case they could well do.

Interesting they’re saying they’ll represent Ipswich & Toowoomba. Unclear whether that would be with the help of the Jets in a potential “merged” bid or the Jets will launch their own bid again to run against this bid.

Here is the jersey mock-up nobody asked for. Team 20 - West Brisbane Hornets (Jet Variety).

The longer the ARLC holds off on announcing the inclusion of an 18th team the stronger the case for the Brisbane Tigers to get the licence. It's unlikely the 18th team will be added within the next 2 seasons because there's still so much time left on the broadcast deal. We're looking at a launch date of 2027 or 2028. The Dolphins will be well established by then.

If a team were added for 2025 then only the Brisbane Tigers will have the resources to enter the NRL at such short notice.

I know RL fans in Perth, PNG and NZ want the 18th licence, but the bids from these places are not in the same league as the Brisbane Tigers.

PNG will need to be subsidised by the Aus Gov and based in Cairns due to PNG's poor infrastructure and high crime rate.

Perth Oval isn't NRL ready. There's no clubhouse and high performance training centre for a Perth-based club. It will take a few years for Perth to build that sort of infrastructure.

New Zealand doesn't even have a bidder.

Keep in mind that if a Perth bid is accepted & given a decent lead-in time (ie closer to 3 years than 2), then that gives plenty of time for not just building a squad but also assembling a sponsorship portfolio, securing State Government assistance & setting up a lot of the related club-infrastructure you cite.

Also, I wouldn't discount NZ just because there's no publicly visible bidder (certainly not with the PR bluster of Brisbane Easts!), as I imagine that a bid -- or bids- wil emerge once the NRL calls for bids.

Remember, the NRL hasn't formally called for bids YET - and keep in mind that over here we're usually a bit more low-key until we get direction - bit of a cultural difference between how NZ & Australia typically approach things.
