Interesting they’re saying they’ll represent Ipswich & Toowoomba. Unclear whether that would be with the help of the Jets in a potential “merged” bid or the Jets will launch their own bid again to run against this bid.

Here is the jersey mock-up nobody asked for. Team 20 - West Brisbane Hornets (Jet Variety).

so East Brisbane and also far west of Brisbane... makes sense. I guess the other Tigers represent Balmain, Ashfield and Campbelltown.

the nrl is in a very enviable position
- fed govt for png
- junior base whole country in the nz
- new market with tv time slot perth
- recapture market share - Brisbane tigers, norths

all 4 deserve clubs
- Brisbane tigers can’t use tigers so should join with norths - Brisbane Bears
- Perth should join with png and do 8 games perth and 4 png - they have mining $ and fed $
- nz needs another team for rivalry

this gets us to 20 with 2x 10 Conferences

AFL has Tasmania, are worried, need to go to nz as quick as they can - but that won’t happen as nz body types are not the same and afl is not supported in nz. Also Australian FL. Australian clubs would be against it, but it may work. #19 teams for tas, so where for #20? QLD is probably what they are after. Or Canberra?

a new 10th game would make them more money, however they would need to maintain competitiveness, we need a draft to equalise out our teams who do exceptional at juniors (penrith, qld, nz) - rest are just competing

a draft would send penriths best juniors out the door to tigers, dragons and canterbury

Brisbane Bears won't happen, that was a failed AFL team owned by a con man. They were about as popular as syphilis.

Great points. We have an over demand for new teams. They have no demand. In fact they did not want the Tassie bid and it’s not even secure given the brawl going on down here over the stadium. My first preference is Perth, then PNG and NZ at a later date (2030?)

PNG will need that amount of time to get its house in order but announcing it will support the fed govs pacific strategy.

Holding off on NZ 2 gives the Warriors a chance to gain some glory and traction prior to the new NZ club.

I don’t support a 3rd Brisbane team. Ffs can just for once we have the confidence to say we own QLD lock stock and barrel?

Sorry but, dumb... a draft would end any chance of penrith actually producing juniors on mass, the draft has already been scraped in court, and if every club actually properly created junior pathways properly, and nurtured juniors as they do, there wouldn't be a need to poach heavily from clubs like sharks, tigers or panthers, theyd just pick out certain positions to fill via the market, as it stands there are too many clubs that rely on the market or a feeder club to be competitive, instead of creating a nursery.

As for the next 3 licenses, it will be Pasifika (Png run, in cairns) Perth and NZ2 (i wouldn't put it past the bears to travel to NZ)

The longer the ARLC holds off on announcing the inclusion of an 18th team the stronger the case for the Brisbane Tigers to get the licence. It's unlikely the 18th team will be added within the next 2 seasons because there's still so much time left on the broadcast deal. We're looking at a launch date of 2027 or 2028. The Dolphins will be well established by then.

If a team were added for 2025 then only the Brisbane Tigers will have the resources to enter the NRL at such short notice.

I know RL fans in Perth, PNG and NZ want the 18th licence, but the bids from these places are not in the same league as the Brisbane Tigers.

PNG will need to be subsidised by the Aus Gov and based in Cairns due to PNG's poor infrastructure and high crime rate.

Perth Oval isn't NRL ready. There's no clubhouse and high performance training centre for a Perth-based club. It will take a few years for Perth to build that sort of infrastructure.

New Zealand doesn't even have a bidder.
Id say the opposite, the longer the introduction of team 18 the more likely it will be nz2 or perth (Im still struggling to see a super conservative NRL bringing in PNG with its inherent risks) .
If the NRL wanted to fast track a team before 2027 then Tigers would be the safest option. But with 3-5 years build up it gives NRL and a future new club time to form and build ready for admission.

The downside to all this is if the NRL think they cant announce team 18 until the 2028- tv deal is done and signed off. That could mean no announcement until 2025/26 ish. when the next deal gets negotiated.

In an ideal world we'd go:
Perth club 18 2027
NZ2 Club 19 2031
Adelaide Bears club 20 2033

Gives NRL its national metro footprint, grows the game in NZ, all new market growth for the game.

The Storm's inability to sell out the smallish Melbourne Rectangular Stadium for the final against Roosters isn't a good sign for Perth. Lang Park was sold out last week. The NRL makes money from all finals games. It's in their interest to have as many teams in Brisbane as they can fit to maximise their chances of having more finals games at Lang Park.

It'll be interesting to see how much support the Warriors get tomorrow. The RWC is on and the Warriors were smashed last week.

replace Adelaide with another south east Queensland team and I’m with you.

should set the NRL up nicely up Until 2050.

There's no way the ARLC will put teams in Adelaide and Perth within a 5 year window. An Adelaide team will rely on players who learnt their trade in the lower grades of the QRL, NSWRL, NZRL and PNGRFL. A team in Perth will be lucky to field 2 or 3 players from the WARL system over its first 5 years. That will place a huge burden on the game's heartland to prop up two new teams. The 17 NRL clubs will never agree to it.

Keep in mind that if a Perth bid is accepted & given a decent lead-in time (ie closer to 3 years than 2), then that gives plenty of time for not just building a squad but also assembling a sponsorship portfolio, securing State Government assistance & setting up a lot of the related club-infrastructure you cite.

Also, I wouldn't discount NZ just because there's no publicly visible bidder (certainly not with the PR bluster of Brisbane Easts!), as I imagine that a bid -- or bids- wil emerge once the NRL calls for bids.

Remember, the NRL hasn't formally called for bids YET - and keep in mind that over here we're usually a bit more low-key until we get direction - bit of a cultural difference between how NZ & Australia typically approach things.

It'll come down to what the Australian broadcasters think will provide them the best return on their investment.

It should go Perth, due to the Timezone & new market, 3 years later, NZ2, gives the Warriors a chance to consolidate after the COVID years and then 3 years later Brisbane Tigers, gives time for the Dolphins to establish and no doubt will get in the ear of Ashfield and pay big dollars to take the Tigers name and Wests to revert to Magpies (won’t happen but they’ll try)

sorry mate but I’m not understanding your question?
In 1995, ARL expanded to 4 teams Perth, Townsville, Auckland and Brisbane2, its heavily stripped the competition of the player pool,
Expanding to Perth and Adelaide will not yeild local players to be able expand further, and the quality of competition between teams will suffer as did the likes of crushers, cowboys and reds.. Auckland had no such issues as they were boosted by both their own juniors and players from the market, and they narrowly missed the finals in thier first year due to a suspension of 2 points for some minor interchange infringement early in the season, which cost them a finals berth... if we are Expanding at a rapid rate, it needs to be to places that are choc ful of players, or a local competition, that are competitive or it will drain the player pool
