Can RL take over from RU in NZ?

Rugby Union in NZ also have some of the most passionate fans around. That's why it has been around more than 105 year and will be around for many more.

New Zealand can have four NRL teams and it still wont happen . Just like if you put two NRL teams in Melbourne and it won't overtake AFL .
Just like a local derby between Brisbane Lions and the new Gold Coast AFL team won't overtake league in Queensland .

lol at turdy.

ignored at planet rugby.

avoids TFC because he got made to look stupid.

hes a dead set nomad.

I've been away for a few days, but Te Kaha earlier on this thread you labelled as 'total bollox' my asserftion that Islander players are renowned for tackling and ball carry. Well, just to be clear, that's exactly what I'm asserting.

Do you disagree with that because it's a generalisation?

No i disagreed with your assertion that PI's are more suited to League than Rugby because they are renowned for tackling and bal carrying... because they are renowned for so much more than that and are just as suited to Rugby as they are League

ratings for the Super 14 have fallen by 22% in NZ.

comments by a former boss of the NZRU that RL is a better spectacle than RU now.

comments by many union commentators that they need to make your game more like RL, that RU is boring.

WOW... you have shown that 2007 was a bad year for Rugby OMG OMG OMG... everybody and their uncle knows that... what you havent shown is how League is going to take over....

Also pointed out in this thread is that the NZRL is broke... they are one step off insolvency... their main sorce of funding SPARC is looking at withholding funding until the mess that is the NZRL board is sorted out...
Its been pointed out that playing numbers are below 20K tho that is PW so there is no proof of that, compared to 120K for Rugby....
You have not shown any League ratings for 2008 after it was pointed out that League is now only shown on Sky digitals second sports channal.. out of reach for your average blue collar league fan....
Its been pointed out that the NZRFU is looking at restructuring the domestic and international comps... finally listening to the main gripe of Rugby supporters... its been pointed out there is a RWC in 3 years... something that will increase support for the game again...

So once again... How, as you have ascerted so many times, will League overtake Rugby in NZ?

so basically less teams in NZRU = a stronger competition. yep as a RL fan, im all in favour of less union teams.

also club union needs a WC to rekindle interest. yep as a RL fan thats what i think, the club game is boring and a few internationals save the game.

in terms of playing numbers, all i see are more RL juniors in the NRL each year so nope dont buy that. quoting turdy is hardly a proper source.

how will RL overtake RU - as ive said before the next TV deals will give RL a massive advantage over union. that advantage will make RL players salaries much more attractive. on top of that, if NHRU clubs raid NZ, it will definately become a 2nd rate competition with dud players all round.

NZ simply hasnt got the population to sustain an elite rugby competition that can compete with the NRL. with NH RU clubs also taking their pickings, it wont leave much left.

hope this helps.

Some interesting Crowd figures for Rugby in Australia

Overall CROWDS Union in Australia
Year, TOTAL
'03 2,574,717
'04 787,980
'05 799,459
'06 1,017,400
'07 876,951
'08 22,287 (Looks like yawnion has not been releasing gate figures for 2008. What do they have to hide?

Those average Yawnion figures have been going down since 03 no wonder Yawnion is going broke! Take a close look at the Totals for each year ;-) Maybe if you sustain the average you might break the 1 million barrier this year but a far cry from 03. Those totals are very alarming mate. Looks like the AFL is effecting Yawnion more the League. Maybe because the AFL are targeting the same people as Yawnion in their marketing of the game in Sydney and Brisbane.

So the good old Rugby had a bad year in 2007 does not cut it based on these figures. Union crowds have been declining since 03 even with the Force coming on board............Big trouble Irish Warrior.....What do you have to say about that?

Overall CROWDS league in Australia

'08 590,137 19,037 50,612 6,138

League is as safe as houses Average constantly between 16 & 17 thousand with totals increasing each year with last year the biggest total crowd numbers. Looks like League's average is also up for the season. At the rate League is going we might break the 4 million barrier in the Centenary year!

Don't Worry Warrior......I am looking for the Union figures for NZ as you need all the help you can get :p

so basically less teams in NZRU = a stronger competition. yep as a RL fan, im all in favour of less union teams.
Not less teams... less fully professional teams... There will still be 20 odd provincial amature and semi pro teams that cover the length of the country... something League doesnt have... these will feed in to the 8-10 FULLY pro teams

also club union needs a WC to rekindle interest. yep as a RL fan thats what i think, the club game is boring and a few internationals save the game.
It doesnt need to re-kindle interest... the main problem is the comp structure... that is being addressed.

in terms of playing numbers, all i see are more RL juniors in the NRL each year so nope dont buy that. quoting turdy is hardly a proper source.
and there are 10 times - 20 times the number of juniors coming through in Rugby... so thats hardly helping League... and the big difference is that the School comps are mainly Rugby... League is concentraed on a few areas... this will ensure a much biggier supply of juniors to rugby than League

how will RL overtake RU - as ive said before the next TV deals will give RL a massive advantage over union. that advantage will make RL players salaries much more attractive. on top of that, if NHRU clubs raid NZ, it will definately become a 2nd rate competition with dud players all round.
Pure specuation... you are assuming that the "bigger deal" will be big enough to firsty entice All Blacks to give up both being an All Black AND the much bigger offers generated in Europe... of course you are wrong there.... and no it wont become a second rate comp... there have been players leaving the country for years... they are always being replaced... wont stop now.

NZ simply hasnt got the population to sustain an elite rugby competition that can compete with the NRL. with NH RU clubs also taking their pickings, it wont leave much left.
hope this helps.[/quote]
Rubbish... the NRL wont ever be able to compete with the deals offered from Europe... remember 1.7mill a year for one player!!!... No NRL team will be in a position to compete...

The NZRL are also looking at restructuring the domestic competition.

They have to... currently they dont have one at all... they should never have canned the bartercard cup

Warrior I am getting close

Yawnion in trouble in the land of the long white cloud.
http://www.stuff.co.nz/dominionpost/4464938a6033.html
"There were 31,571 at Westpac Stadium for last week's match against the Crusaders, but only 16,000 turned up to watch the Reds in the second round, and 16,900 for the Chiefs match a week later.
It's a far cry from the average crowds of more than 27,000 who watched the Hurricanes in 2000, 2001 and 2002 when they were losers, but entertaining losers."

Very Alarming Warrior

A great article on the true state of Union in the Southern Hemisphere. It's like I wake up every day and the picture for Yawnion gets worse.

"Rugby in Australia might be sailing close to the wind financially, but it is only going to take a modest shift in the breeze for New Zealand and South Africa to start luffing themselves"

"And the worst may be yet to come, because unless a miracle arises in the next couple of years, the NZRU stands to lose $30 million or so from hosting the 2011 World Cup. Now is it a little clearer why the Kiwis wanted the number of competing teams reduced from 20 to 16? "

"As in the case of New Zealand, the real crisis for South Africa might be lurking just around the corner. If the SA Government keeps pressing for rugby to fall into line on the transformation issue and start selecting black players en masse in the Springboks, the financial underpinning of the game there could collapse. "

"AFL is expanding, targeting the Gold Coast and western Sydney; the NRL, having bedded down the Titans, is now looking at pushing into Wellington and the NSW central coast as well, while football's A-League is just a year away from bringing in new teams. Rugby cannot be seen to have a stagnant product. "

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news boys. At least you can watch the six nations on TV at 3am in the morning or move over to pommy land to get the Rugby fix.
