I find it strange that one article states we have no room under the cap to sign new players and then in several articles we have been mentioned as being interested in the following players;
Shackton
Fitz
Fien
David Willaims
Keith Peters ( I know a cheapie)
Matthew Bell ( as above)
Dave Taylor
Tahu

Made offers to;
Poore
Creagh
Crocker

I know not to beleive the media, but gee where there is smoke there is fire, we must have some money to spend

I wouldn't imagine that we'd make any more than 2 outside signings, the rest will be internal signings.

From that list I'd take (if possible):

1. Shack
2. Fitz on a one-year with a second in our favour
3. Poore

If we can squeeze those into our cap I'd be happy.

I'd also be happy with the previously mentioned Lehroyd-Lars and /or Logan from Canberra.

New coach Daniel Anderson’s plans to haul Parramatta back to the top of the NRL ladder are in turmoil following revelations the club is already flirting with salary cap disaster in 2010.

Anderson and other members of the football club fronted the new Leagues Club board last night and presented a dire financial situation that means the struggling Eels will again be only bit-part players in the transfer market for the second year in a row.

So worrying is the situation that while much was made of Brett Finch’s apparent run-in with Anderson, his request for a release was actually seen as a godsend in the front office where the number-crunchers were expecting major cap dramas beyond 2009.

Even with the extra $300,000 freed by Finch’s departure the Eels remain right on the cusp as they struggle to retain the likes of young props Tim Mannah and Josh Cordoba – a problem exacerbated by the back-ended contract previously offered to captain Nathan Cayless.

New Leagues Club chairman Roy Spagnolo – who swept to power as part of the rebel ticket that ousted the old board late last month – was reluctant to discuss details when contacted but confirmed that a meeting had been held at Parramatta Leagues Club last night.

“They (the football office) let the board know where we are at with player retention and the upgrading of certain players,” he said, admitting that the situation is far from ideal.

“I was a little bit aware of it, probably moreso than some of the other guys, but it will be okay.”

A source close to the Eels camp told NRL.com that Anderson and his staff faced an uphill battle in their efforts to piece together the remnants of a disastrous 2008 season and what he described as some poorly thought-out retention and recruitment decisions.

“Daniel Anderson has inherited an absolute disaster,” the source said. “I think the board was quite shocked last night because some of the things that they had heard previously were a bit of a misnomer.

“The place was a shemozzle.”

Parramatta fans have already vented their frustration at the club’s plight by voting the old board out but will almost certainly have to bide their time before any dreams of a bright new future become reality.

Having already been priced out of negotiations with the likes of Dragons back-rower Ben Creagh, Spagnolo said it remained unclear whether the Eels could afford to bring in much fresh blood for next season.

“It just depends,” he said. “I guess as time goes on we’ll know more about where we go from here but as for the presentation it was very informative and answered a lot of the questions that we had.”

Instead, the Eels look set to focus once again on retention rather than recruitment with veteran back-rower Joe Galuvao set to be offered a new one-year deal with the club.

Seemingly on the scrapheap as recently as last season – when he admitted he was happy to play out the remainder of his current deal for feeder club Wentworthville – the 30-year-old has already played as many NRL games this season as he did in 2008 and is enjoying a new lease on life under Anderson’s rule.

“He is really enjoying his football again,” said his manager, Allan Gainey, after Galuvao was forced out of South Sydney 18 months ago.

“He has a good rapport with the coach who has given him a lot of confidence and told him that he is an important part of the team.

“Souths flicked him up to the Queensland Cup which had him down in the dumps but he has come a long way since then.”

The Eels have been talking to Dragons prop Justin Poore although his signing is now unlikely.

Penrith duo Matthew Bell and Keith Peters are also in the club’s sights with the hooking role at the top of Parramatta’s list of priorities.

Some good news from Finch aprat from the obvious fact that his departure has lead to another substandard season... If we are seriously aiming at Poore, we will have to fork out a fair bit but is it worth it??? But we still need to aim hgher. Hindmarsh would be alot more influencial in attack if he had a serious helping hand in his massive defence work load so some upfront talent is essentgial. That should be our motivation to get some fresh talent.

Absolutely. With pretty much every team, the coach gets the players he wants. This means he needs to negotiate their salaries etc.

But hey, just blame DF. Everybody does for everything, so what's the difference here?

I`m not blaming him at all. I was just asking a question. In fact, if anything, I`m now wondering - if he has no role in recruiting players - why have people consistently blamed him for the fact we have not won a premiership for so long? Also, if the coach has TOTAL control over who comes and who leaves the club, then maybe that`s not such a good system. After all, one man`s opinion on a player`s ability can be horribly wrong sometimes (as we on this forum know only too well!).

agreed, this resigned defeatist garbage like "worst crop" for DA to walk into is a little over the top. look at the tigers ffs, and penrith have been woeful for years, they STILL don't have a decent halves combo.

besides chad robinson and tahu (and finch), this squad isn't that much different than the one that was tipped to go all the way. there's just alot of cultural stuff that needs to be sorted out, and DA is the man to do it.

buying new players is NOT the be all and end all of our issues atm.

If you`re talking about the 2008 side - WHO tipped them to go all the way? The media did. And Parra supporters got carried away with it. The media talked us up as being a 'star-studded' side that was going to go the next step and win the comp. That was just simply untrue. In my opinion, the 2007 side was fairly ordinary, and Hagan got them to play out of their skins in the last six weeks of the comp (something he`s never been given full credit for). I think the reason they failed so miserably last year is that , they really weren`t a 'star-studded' side and couldn`t keep playing beyond themselves. We really DON`T have a strong line-up. That`s not pessimism, that`s much-needed reality! And I also believe that the loss of Tahu and Robinson were BIG losses.

Exactly. I honestly really believe we have the talent - the two Mitchells up front and Anthony Mitchell imo will all be stars; Tim Robinson and David Baumann; all going to go far imo, and they're here. Maybe not ready yet, but they will be, and we'll be sweet.

I think we`ll be sweet, too. I`m an optimist. But I`m also a realist. I think it`s only sensible to fully comprehend that our playing roster (current first-graders) is not as strong as a lot of other clubs (maybe even ANY other clubs) at the moment. I have great faith in the coach; I also think that the original article is probably an absolute crock of sh*t; and I think we will re-build in 2011 and become a force again. I have absolutley no doubt about that. I`m excited about that. But to pretend that our current side is a very good one, is just unrealistic.

If you think the current team is nearly the same as the one tipped to go all the way in 2007 you have to be kidding.

From that team we are missing Tahu, Tim Smith, Riddell, Ian Hindmarsh, Marsh, Robinson, Wagon and now Finch.
8 out of the 17 players are not here. That's nearly half the team being different!

speaking of our cap space, how important is Kelly's signature after his 5 try effort for Wenty today.

From what I recall, at the begining of 07, no one tipped us to do well and at the begining of 08, we were tipped by many to win the comp (myself admitedly).

Even if we could keep Kelly, where would he play perminantly. I think KK is a five eight and I think Kelly would be severly hindered if he played at halfback. KK to 7 and Kelly to 6?
