Yeah, that struck me as a bizarre claim too.

What exactly do they define as "avid" that can pull in nearly a quarter of a million people? Seems pretty fishy...

Its BS. If they were that "avid" NS Oval would be packed for every game, the LC wouldn't be losing money and the bears would be in a lot healthier position than they currently are.

The Bears only hope are to partner with the 18th club prospect, if and when that ever happened.

Big "if".. it's been more than 20 years since they were a stand-alone team, and for all the power the brand had/has (depending on your perspective), the Bears are a fading memory whose flame is kept alive by the quirk that their district wasn't re-distributed to other NRL clubs.

If Sydney was realigned in the early-mid 2000s with districts feeding directly to the remaining NRL clubs, we wouldn't be seeing the "Bring back the Bears" refrain getting articles every few months.

As far as the "link up with another expansion bid" idea goes, I find it hard to believe that one of the current Brisbane bids, or the West Coast Pirates, or any potential NZ 2 or Adelaide bid would willingly drop their branding for the Bears, let alone offering a stake in the expansion team.... UNLESS the Bears can guarantee that it gets them the expansion spot - and that's only a promise the NRL itself can make, not the Bears.

I wish the Bears would f**k off and accept they're unwanted and unneeded. The name "North Sydney" and the Bears district should be given to Manly.

North Sydney Sea Eagles. That way you've got North Sydney, Sydney and South Sydney represented.

Manly were the superior club, on and off the field, with a superior brand to the Bears.

New teams in Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth and NZ deserve to have their own identify and not be linked with a failed club from Sydney that didn't even have a suitable stadium and never won shit.

A Sharks and Roosters merger could be great. Sydney Sharks, with sky blue, white and red their colours. Sky blue is the colour of NSW, so it would be great for the CBD to have a team that can tap into that brand, similar to how the Brisbane Broncos use the maroon of Queensland.

The CBD is known for its harbour, so giving it a brand that fits in with it would do more to make the club more marketable to future generations and people from other markets.

I'm actually amazed that no expansion bid has seized the red & black as their proposed identity.

No yellow, gold, grey or any other colour - just red & black.

I mean it's a classic combo, and it's fair game now.. yeah?

Well yeah, the jersey choice is obvious...

yep they’d need to bring millions to the table from backers (their LC is skint), agree to majority ownership by the other party and need the nrl to say that it guarantees another city a team. Highly unlikely.

Exactly, why would the Bears (or more accurately their backer) pay shedloads for a minority share in a joint venture?

Even if that hurdle is cleared, going cap-in-hand to the NRL asking for an expansion guarantee that they can take to inter-state suitors is borderline bonkers.

In an ideal world you'd have an NRL that already had a expansion strategy and knew exactly where, when and who and be working towards it!
With Vlandys, and his puppets, seemingly distaste for RL in Perth the only hope we may have (presuming of course there is any expansion and the push for an 18th club comes in next 5 years) is to appeal to his "tribalism" BS agenda and maybe resurrecting an old brand will appeal to his old thinking. Short of that we either have to hope he fcks off before discussion on an 18th club comes around, or we kiss goodbye to the NRL ever becoming a national comp.

Spot on. That's EXACTLY what keeps this "Frankenstein" idea going.

With forward-looking administration, it wouldn't even be worth raising. Instead we'd be broadening the game's horizons, not looking to revive an old identity to foist on an expansion market.

To be honest, I used to think the "Bears elsewhere" option wasn't a bad idea (maybe even a really good idea), but I think the window on that has closed now, it's just been too long.... and the aforementioned obstacles just add to it being something I'm growing increasingly skeptical about.

It has been good to see the recent evolution of Perth Red's open mindedness from "brand new Perth team only" to "Bears partnership could work".

Next he will be hailing PVL as the great man.

the way I see it, it is a sht second best, but if it’s the only chance with the game under myopic Vlandys so be it. It would be a travesty not to see RL a national sport and to see afl march on as Australia’s football code unattested. I’d rather a locally WA owned unique new brand but if it has to be west coast bears I could live with it for the sake of the game here and nationally in the future.

What if a Perth Bears JV happened, then the Bears (minority partner) went broke and got bought out by the Perth side of the JV, who re-brand the team as Pirates?

Heeeey.. *some* of that sounds vaguely familiar....

One of the good things about the Bears being so dead and having no fanbase is there isn't the problem of fans here who have an existing NRL team being willing toi support them, unlike the relocation of a current club. I've run a poll on the WC Pirates Supporters group page to see if fans would support a West Coast Bears and whilst many said they'd prefer the Pirates, 95% said they would support a West Coast Bears club.

I don't see the point of relocating a NSW Cup team from Sydney to Perth. If a Sydney NRL team were to relocate to Adelaide or Perth then it would make sense, as it would decongest an oversaturated and unsustainable market. Bears relocating to Perth is just an attempt to bring back an old Sydney brand to appease whiny RL fans in Sydney who think it's still 1986.

To put it into perspective, you would have been hard-pressed to see ex-Newtown fans demanding them to make a return in the early 2000s, about 20 years after they departed first grade, let alone articles speculating on their return.

Yes, I know it's different circumstances, but still that amount of time has passed for the Bears.

If Norths come back as an expansion team in Perth or NZ, maybe Wentworthville would apply to get a license for Adelaide?

It'd be "righting the wrong" from 1967, when they weren't promoted despite their 2nd tier record.... ;)
