If they count touch footy as AFL would there would be 1 million.

both codes count registered players, and also “participants”. Registered players are players registered with a club in the full version of the sport. Participants are people who do Auskick, league stars, school programs etc. nrl now also comments on touch numbers. I do agree we should be aligning touch much more with RL and selling that story as much as possible. Sadly nrl has decided to stop reporting registered player numbers in its annual report.

Most people outside of nsw and qlnd still don’t see touch as playing a variant of RL. Touch and possibly nines could well be the future of grassroots rl as society shies away from full contact sports.

Yep. The NRL should have a televised touch footy pre season comp with the NRL stars and the elite TF player playing together.

They did a few years ago, i watch the womens Gold Coast titans vs the Tigers, was a great game, super fast, and the planning was amazing, prior to getting touch they are setting up the next 2-3 plays

yeah, more people would have watched if they had NRL stars playing in it alongside the TF stars.

according to their website (which needs modernising lol) there are 16 jnr clubs and 11 snr clubs. Getting hold of registered playing numbers in RL is nigh on impossible.
So it's similar to Logan. I cannot see why Gosford should have a team over Logan, Ipswich or Moreton Bay.

Here's clubs from Logan that I know of. There might be more.

Rochedale Tigers
Springwood Tigers
Flagstone Tigers
Logan Brothers
Logan City Hawks
Slacks Creek Lions
Griffith Logan Redbacks
Browns Plains Bears
Waterford Demons
Eagleby Giants
Beenleigh Pride
Beenleigh JRLFC
Mustangs Brothers RLFC
Greenbank Raiders

Edit:
I forgot about Jimboomba Thunder and Edens Landing.

If/when the AFL next expand Canberra will almost certainly be one of the next 2-4 clubs, assuming that they don't attempt to go overseas.

It'll honestly have to be because they are running out of markets that could support teams. I mean where's left that are realistic chances of being a success? Not many places is the answer.
Maybe Perth can support a 3rd team. Tasmania if it's heavily subsidised by both the government and league. Then realistically Canberra is their next best option and I'd even argue that commercially it's a better option than Tasmania. After those three I can't see any options that wouldn't be very risky.

BTW, god help RL in the ACT and Southern NSW when it happens.

A Canberra based AFL side would be at least as big, if not bigger than, the Raiders from day one, and on a community level Aussie Rules is already kicking RL's arse in Canberra, so I can't imagine what would happen once the AFL flooded the local grassroots with even more resources.
So yeah, unless there're big changes to how the NRL administer and promote the sport at the grassroots, an AFL club in Canberra would really shake shit up for the sports industry everywhere south of about Goulburn.

Sydney 3 more likely & afl dumb enough to fund it along with the current 4 northern teams which forever will need propping up.
Canberra & Tasmania don't bring the return although the later may get up from pressure of afl fans.
Canberra lucky to be in NRL. Very lucky to miss chop in super rugby as well.

tassie govt has offered to fund a new club $11mill a year! Afl would love north melbourne to relocate to hobart I suspect.

This.

One sport where top male & female stars can play together. Been saying this for years.

Afl will beat NRL to punch on this too & that sport doesn't even have a non contact version!!!
Great idea, but will never happen, know one club would risk injuring their "star players" on a separate comp, most clubs struggles at the moment with injuries already, look what happened with the nines last year, certian clubs just took the piss

No they are not that dumb.
  • GWS has a 10k average attendance in Sydney over their existence, and most people whom aren't totally bias would agree those numbers are padded to some degree.
  • 30k members in 2019, but who knows what percentage of those are ticketed (or memberships of any substance), and who knows how many of those members are from Canberra (it's got to be close to half).
  • I can't be bothered looking it up, but I can't imagine that their average ratings are that great either.
I could go on but I think you get the point; in fact after looking at those numbers I'm willing to say that with the probable exception of sponsorship dollars, if Canberra had it's own team that they'd pull larger numbers than GWS currently does.

Maybe in 20-30 years time GWS will be pulling solid numbers and the AFL will look at a third Sydney team, but they'd be absolutely mad to add a third one anytime soon.

Eddie Maguire called it football socialism on the radio and it has been referred to this many times. It is an equalisation fund, the clubs complain however the AFL know it is good for the overall strength of the competition or people will end up in never ending debates on football forums about relocation etc

I'm just passing on his comment. I can get his contact details if you like and you can enlighten him if you like.

Are you an accountant or economist by any chance?
After years of complaining about other clubs, particularly Sydney, getting leg ups Eddie Maguire is now the champion of 'football socialism'. What a hypocrite lol.

Besides, describing the AFL as socialist is at best a very wonky analogy anyway. Let's put it this way, no genuine socialist with an understanding of socialist philosophy or economics would ever recognise them as socialist.

BTW what are your qualifications to talk on this subject? Or are you just trying to appeal to authority because you can't form a solid argument of your own?
