This is where expansion needs to be focused on all levels of the game, not just the top. If we are to expand into new territories then lets do it properly and have support for the WARL across all age groups, funding to run a SG Ball HMathews and NSW cup or Q'land cup side. We have produced 5 or 6 1st graders out of the WARL jnr comp in the last few years, we obviously need to be producing a lot more to sustain an NRL team but where there is a will there is a way.

Do you think that there has been enough ground work done in WA at the lower levels that they would not be a significant drain on the talent pool on all levels? And if not, do you think that expansion would still be a good idea into Perth? (The CC im giving a pass because they will make up for it within 2 or 3 seasons)

IMO, I dont think the competition can handle another Melbourne (a side that does not add to the overall talent pool of the game, whether or not that's a reason not to expand is a matter of opinion). Perth I think will contribute a hell of alot more then Melbourne talent wise, but how long will it take before they start adding players to the comp regularly?

Note, I am very much in favour of expansion into Perth.

Good points and in the ideal world I'd say no and that we should be laying much stronger foundations at all levels of the game. Sadly we do not have an administration at NRL or ARL level that is capable of this and the only way it is ever going to happen is to get a team in at the top and build momentum from that. Ideally we would have seen the NRL at the last TV deal put aside $1/2million a year to support the WARL growing the game alongside FTA TV into WA insisted upon, 2-3 NRL games a year in Perth and the good work done by the ARL over the last 3 years started much sooner.

As it is the only hope of growing the game in WA is to get an NRL team first then let jnr development etc flow from there. We are in a much stronger position than Melbourne were in as A) we are already producing a few 1st graders which would suggest a talent pool exists (all be it shallow at the moment) and B) the NRL club will be run by the WARL so the links through all grades will be strong from day one.

I think our first 3-4 years will be covered by attracting a core of quality players back from SL/RU/AFL. Hopefully we will be in a stronger development position by 2017 and starting to see more and more quality WA players coming through (if the hard work is done by the WARL and NRL on jnr development)

The fact that the Reds will be run by the WARL fills me with confidence, but 3-4 years is optimistic.

Because of that alone, hopefully the mandate for the WARL is to have the Reds fund and be a flagship for junior footy in WARL. It would kind of be the way that it is in SA and AFL, where the licence fees paid go to the junior footy governing body.

Id like to see one day the VRL get money (hopefully perhaps they can get this money from the commission) to buy the Melbourne Storm.

Id be willing to persist with both sides at junior level for about 30 years from now. I see Perth getting pretty strong, not as strong as any of the heart land areas, but strong enough to be standing on their own 2 feet talent wise like Manly and the Roosters. If they were as strong as the CC id be stoked.

Perth's player base will build up to decent numbers in time, if they get a team and some bloody coverage. The NRL really need to push for guaranteed coverage in all states in the next TV agreement.

With virtually no coverage there is still a decent little competition here. Only 8 teams, and they miss every 2nd year, there is u/7, 9s, 11s etc. but there is a good mix of players in the clubs. Some are from families from the East or started playing over East and some have AFL backgrounds but their kids wanted to play RL, with no coverage here that is a miracle in itself.

I wasn't here when the Reds were in the ARL/SL but I'd imagine the kids would sign up in droves if Perth had a team. Not to mention the extra money in the TV deal because we'd finally be national again.

Perth would have to sign up a lot of players from elsewhere at first but it won't take long for the locals to start making it. Last year the Storm signed up a 15 year old from North Beach, he may or may not make it to the NRL but it's a good sign that Perth could produce their own one day.

Bold Bears $20m home den project

A MULTIMILLION-dollar sporting centre could be home to the Central Coast Bears in time for the NRL 2013 pre-season.

That’s the intention of Bears chief executive Greg Florimo, who has been in talks with political, business and sporting figures about the plan. Several Central Coast sites could come into consideration for the project, which has a preliminary cost of $20 million.

A further stage with accommodation and other commercial opportunities could double the cost of the facility.

Florimo said it would include a rugby league field, a synthetic playing field, cutting-edge sport science facilities, office space and a home for the Central Coast Bears.

It could possibly also be home to the Central Coast Academy of Sport. While there is still plenty of work to be done, Florimo said he wanted the “doors to be open” by October 2012.

The project is just one plan the Bears have in the works. They are also working on raising capital of $6 million through a community and private investor effort.
Letters could be mailed to members and sponsors as early as this week calling for expressions of interest in the proposal.

This news comes after the Bears latest meeting with the NRL.

The Bears, led by Florimo and head of football operations David Fairleigh, met with NRL chief executive David Gallop in Sydney last Thursday.
Florimo said the Bears provided the NRL with an update on the bid and that Gallop offered plenty of encouragement.

“David Gallop suggested the NRL was looking at expansion in mid-2011, and that the Central Coast Bears are on the right path and that the NRL is very impressed with progress of the bid,” Florimo said.

While former Gosford Townie Matt Orford was a guest at one of the Bears recent seminars, Florimo denied a recent media report saying they had been in talks for him to become assistant coach to David Fairleigh.

Gotta say that I really hope CC get in but think Perth has to be a priority as well.

With 100 players in ESL, surely we can cope with another 2 or 3 teams.

Tonight on NRL on Fox, Gallop all but said two teams was the ideal expansion target - one heartland (likely to be either CC or CQ) and one "risk" (likely to be WA).

Florimo drives Central Coast bid

A chat with Central Coast Bears CEO and former North Sydney star Greg Florimo reveals the importance of the Bears’ bid in taking the ‘expansion’ fight to the AFL, the preparations underway in league-mad Gosford, and his passion for seeing the red and black of North Sydney back in the top flight in new and improved form.

It also speaks to something else which may ultimately be even more revealing: Florimo’s willingness to promote his team by engaging even with the fringe rugby league blogosphere – and to respond directly to some of the criticisms levelled at the notion of a Central Coast team – emphasises the professionalism which underpins not only the CEO’s work but the entire bid itself.

It is this professionalism which will stand the Bears in excellent stead when the NRL delivers its verdict on expansion of the competition from 2013.

“We need to make sure that we have absolutely every box ticked,” said Florimo. More than anything, he said, this meant sustainability – convincing the NRL that the Central Coast Bears would be around not just for two or three seasons, but “for the next 100 years.”

For the NRL – still scarred by ill-fated expansion attempts during the Super League war which claimed the previous incarnation of the Bears – a safe pair of hands might be exactly what is needed to compliment more ambitious new ventures in Perth, Wellington or elsewhere.

The foundations are already in place for the Central Coast Bears, not least in the state-of-the-art Bluetongue Stadium in Gosford. As Florimo points out, as well as the purpose-built stadium, the Bears have assembled a six-person board of directors, an official bid team and a range of corporate partners, including major sponsors Mortgage House.

Throw in a large and rapidly growing local community which in Florimo’s words is “crying out for a rugby league team to follow”, and you have a compelling case for the inclusion of a Central Coast club, particularly as the game strives for a bigger TV broadcast deal in 2013.
Perversely, one of the problems for Florimo and his team may be that on one level, the case for a Central Coast team is a little too easy to make.

Critics of the bid — and those critically assessing its merits — have pointed out that establishing a team in what is demonstrably already a rugby league town and state may signal a lack of expansionary ambition for a code still battling to shrug off its east-coast-only image.

On this front, the contrast between an AFL’s expansion into the huge (and hugely challenging) Western Sydney market and the NRL’s prospective hop up the F3 to Gosford is stark.

Florimo’s counter, though, is that the Bears would provide a unique opportunity for the NRL to re-engage with the “core group of supporters” it lost when North Sydney were excluded, and to finally heal old Super League wounds.

This in and of itself would be an immensely positive development in the ‘code wars’, given the AFL’s specific marketing strategy of recruiting disillusioned rugby league fans in the aftermath of the 1990’s ructions, and the gaping strategic hole left on economically-lucrative North Shore area of Sydney when the Bears departed.
And while the new incarnation of the Bears would emphatically be a Central Coast team, ties with the old North Sydney market form a crucial part of the bid’s emotional and financial foundations.

On a personal level, it’s clear exactly what the re-admission of the Bears, in Central Coast form, would mean to Florimo – who played almost 300 first grade games for, and represented the Kangaroos from, the old North Sydney.

“I think that there is so much history and tradition that has gone into the club over the last 102 years that you just can’t turn up your toes and say “that’s it, it’s too hard, it’s all over,” said Florimo.

“You’ve got to fight for it, and that’s what I’m doing.

“It’s for all those players, fans, supporters and families that have been touched by the Bears over the last 102 years, and about bringing some happiness back to them,” he added.

Old North Sydney fans – and the next generation of Bears fans awaiting the verdict on the Central Coast bid – can rest assured that when the NRL formally comes knocking, Florimo and his team will have done everything in their power to make this ambition a reality.

Hockey quote from today:

"If the coalition is elected on the 21st of August, we will be doing everything we can to support the Bears getting back into the NRL."

Obviously no major detail but he also said this:

"The Bears are getting a proposal together, to put to the NRL - it may involve new facilities in the area - that's something the coalition would definitely support."

Awesome news.

Now if only the Knights could get someone to put a swift boot up Labor's backside perhaps at a Federal level, because the NSW Govt are f**king useless.

I love to see a Manly supporter pushing for our cause in the photo.

True Manly rugby league supporters loved the local derby, Bears vs Manly. One of my best games to always remember was the Bears 41 Manly 8 at NSO.

Lets hope it will be on again soon - whether it be the one game at NSO or at Gosford, I can't wait for the local derby and the new one against Newcastle.

GO THE CC BEARS AND WA REDS.

I love the Bears spin but to somehow suggest admitting a CC team is going to challeng the AFL is a bit of a stretch!

At least they won't grow up supporting a cheating club.
