Central Coast Bears and MAX Employment aim to create 1,000 jobs before Christmas Day
29th October, 2010 | Posted by Central Coast Bears.

Santa will arrive early on the Central Coast this year, with the Central Coast Bears joining forces with MAX Employment, in helping find 1000 jobs in the region before Christmas Day.

MAX Employment is one of the largest national Employment Services providers, with sites in every capital city and most regions across Australia.

The Central Coast has an unemployment rate of seven per cent, that’s higher than the national average and the Central Coast Bears want to help tackle the issue.

Following the region’s overwhelming support for an NRL team in 2013, the foundation club wants to give something back to the community.

“As corporate citizens and part of the local community fabric, we want to help drive up local job opportunities,” Central Coast Bears CEO, Greg Florimo said.

“We believe we can get 1000 new jobs by Christmas and we’re appealing for organisations to pledge jobs through our website.”

Through the Central Coast Bears website, there will be an opportunity for job seekers to find jobs and employers to post vacancies.

All this will be driven through MAX Employment, who will appropriately match employers with job seekers.

“We’re inviting local employers to pledge jobs through our website to give local job seekers a fair go,” said Florimo.

Another rugby league legend, Steve Mortimer, will also help drive the campaign. An ambassador for MAX Employment, Mortimer has provided valuable life and career advice to MAX clients.

“The involvement of the Central Coast Bears in this initiative and the huge following they have will make our target of 1000 jobs that much easier,” said Mortimer.

“This is a great example of how sport can give back something to the community.”

The public can keep up-to-date with the campaign’s progress, through the Central Coast Bears website, as well as our facebook and twitter pages.

Local media will also be supporting the project, with Sea FM and the Central Coast Express Advocate providing regular updates throughout the campaign.

Up Up the mighty BEARS!!

The five-point plan to fix the NRL
by Nick Tedeschi

The ARL have reportedly agreed to the long awaited introduction of an independent commission. This means that News Limited and the clubs ‘only’ have to agree with the ARL’s proposal before the game can finally get what it has long needed.

Contrary to popular belief, the independent commission will not solve all of the problems in rugby league. It will, however, will be good for the game and help tackle some severe issues facing the sport in Australia.

The first matter on the agenda, and one that will have a large impact on many others facing the game, is the new television deal. The independent commission must ensure that rugby league gets full value for its product while ensuring it retains control of scheduling.

The NRL can no longer be the meek citizen, oppressed and prepared to accept second best. Rugby league is the most watched televised sport in Australia and has four ratings bonanzas in the Grand Final and three State of Origin matches along with games that regularly out-rate competition. The independent commission must ensure the NRL is rewarded handsomely.

It is also imperative that the NRL take control of scheduling and enforce its next broadcast rights. At present, Nine and Fox Sports determine when matches are played while Nine are permitted by the NRL to completely ignore the code outside the heartland states, despite a contractual obligation to show free-to-air matches at a reasonable time outside New South Wales and Queensland. The new television deal needs to put scheduling powers back in the hands of the game.

The independent commission must also implement a plan to grow the game and that means ensuring NRL matches are shown at a reasonable hour outside of New South Wales and Queensland. Digital multi-channelling certainly makes this easier, yet Nine have refused to come to the party this season and cannot be expected to act in the best interests of the game when not obliged.

A new television deal will also give the independent commission flexibility with regards to the salary cap, the next Players Association deal and possible expansion.

There has certainly been significant player unrest over the last few seasons regarding player payments. A more reasonable television deal will allow the NRL more flexibility with the salary cap. The independent commission will face plenty of questions regarding the salary cap once the new television deal is signed. Will the salary cap simply just increase in line with an increase in the annual club grant? Will there be greater dispensation for long serving players and local juniors? Will the independent commission introduce a dual salary cap system that includes a centrally determined points component to ensure a Melbourne Storm-like systematic breach is avoided in the future? Will the cap remain the same and a fund established by the NRL to pay the stars of the game more, keeping them in rugby league? Will rep payments rise?

The independent commission will have many options regarding player payments and the salary cap and it is critical they get it right to ensure the players are happy, the fans get to see the best players and the game continues to grow.

The competition must expand over the next five years and the independent commission must develop and implement a long-term strategy for the growth of the NRL. There is no doubt that there are enough quality players to fill two more teams. Simply look at those driven to England due to salary cap constraints.

One of those new teams must certainly be in a new market. The Central Coast Bears will be the first team, repaying a growing rugby league district while welcoming back a foundation club after more than a decade on the sideline. The second should be in Perth. There is a strong junior base in the area, it is a moneyed town and there is no doubt inroads made in Perth would help fill the coffers of the game.

One of the first acts of the independent commission should be to establish a rules committee. At present, the rules are amended at an annual conference of stakeholders and are driven by coaches seeking an edge. The good of the code is rarely considered and the result has been increasingly technical and overcomplicated rules and interpretations that baffle fans and confuse referees. The beauty of rugby league is its simplicity and a rules committee should be established to undo much of the overcomplicating of the last decade and ensure future changes are made with the overall product as the primary consideration.

The current video referee system must also be canned. It simply isn’t working with the primary problem being the onus taken off the on-field referee, who simply refers anything with the potential of uncertainty upstairs. Video referees then often feel the need to justify their existence with cute calls, nit-picking and pettiness.

NRL needs a move to a challenge system similar to the NFL, where the on-field referee makes a call and a decision can only be overturned by the on-field referee, who will check the video in a booth provided at each end of the ground, if a team challenges and there is overwhelming evidence to suggest the decision was wrong.

It won’t be all beer and skittles for the independent commission. In fact a rocky road awaits. The concept at least provides hope for those who love rugby league, however, that the game will finally look out for itself rather than be crippled by internal self-interest and small-time politicking as it has been for so many years.

I always find it interesting when people want to blame the salary cap when players decide to go and play in the UK.

Haven't people heard of a lifestyle change. While the money the UK clubs can pay has to be a factor, so must be playing in another country especially one so close to Europe.

If a club in the UK offered me a contract the same value of one here in Australia you couldn't get me on a jet quick enough to go. I suspect most of us here would do the same thing.

For me its a cop out to say players going to the UK is all about the salary cap. Phillip Ronald Gould has brainwashed everyone in to believing that. He has an agenda to either get rid of the cap or have it changed in a way that it will no longer work.

Nothing against the Bears, but I would rather see Perth and another team from NZ come in. I am not sure that a team from the central coast will bring a lot of value to the NRL.

The game needs to expand its boundaries and placing a team at Gosford will not be doing this. All this will create is another Sydney team. When we have too many already.

My wife and I are heading down there in an hour or so. Should be good.

Make sure you pass by the Central Coast Bears stand, even if you don't plan to buy anything from it. Have a quick chat to the volunteers and see the enthusiasm and passion they have for the Central Coast Bears bid. The more people that see the hard work physically being put into this bid, the better for us, the local community and the game in general. I think Flo will be there too today. Ask some questions and take some pics if you have a camera/time.

It's all appreciated by us.:)

Have a great day mate and enjoy the food, vino and atmosphere.

Most definately R&B.

It's not lost on us as to how passionate our volunteers are nor the Administrators of the club in charge of the bid. This is why my wife and I make the effort to at least attend these organised member drives if only to show our support which I am sure they appreciate. We have recruited other NRL team fans we know to join, we are doing our bit as I hope many are ;-)

I am in a fortunate position with our junior and senior rugby league club to have spoke to Flo on various occasions re: our bid for entry in to the NRL competition. You see the passion in the man's eyes when he talks about it. He lights up. It's inspiring stuff and it will be very rewarding to see us granted a license if only to see that man's reaction.

About to head off. Looking forward to it.

CENTRAL COAST BEARS PELICANS TO TRY OUT FOR THE WOMEN'S INDIGENOUS ALL STARS RUGBY LEAGUE TEAM
2nd November, 2010 | Posted by Central Coast Bears.

Following their success in the women’s tournament of the NSW Aboriginal Rugby League Knockout, up to 10 players from the Central Coast Bears Pelicans will be trying out for a spot in the Indigenous All Stars team.

The 2011 Women’s All Stars game will be held as part of the NRL All Stars celebration, which will be played out on the Gold Coast in February.

Central Coast Bears Pelicans, captain Melanie Sutton says: “I’m extremely proud of the girls.

“We were a throw together team and to finish third was a great achievement.

“We lost to overall winners, Redfern in the semis, in a game many likened to a grand-final.”

Sutton is one of several Pelicans trying out for a spot in the Indigenous All-Stars side on November 13th in Sydney.

Central Coast Bears CEO Greg Florimo congratulated the Pelicans, whose playing jerseys were sponsored by the Bears.

“It’s a fantastic achievement and the start of a great relationship with the Central Coast Bears and the Darkinjung.

“We see many great indigenous players out here on the Central Coast and we want to try and nurture that by focusing on indigenous programs and relations.”

CEO of Darkinjung Local Aboriginal Land Council, Sean Gordon, agrees.

“This shows a good partnership between the largest Aboriginal organisation in the region and the Central Coast Bears.
“The Central Coast Bears show of support for the women’s side was viewed positively among spectators and it shows the Central Coast coming together as a community.”

Sixty six teams competed in last month’s Aboriginal Knockout tournament in Woy Woy, making it the biggest in the event’s 40 year history.

The knockout tournament is the biggest cultural, social and sporting gathering on the Aboriginal calendar.
