Will the Bears be admitted into the NRL?

With the NRL increasingly confident of expansion in 2013, I thought it timely for a quick update of the progress of the leading contender – the Central Coast Bears.

The NRL has increasingly stressed that they are not looking to just place pins on a map but rather are looking at the quality of each individual bid and its strategic impact.

So to be successful, a bid must be highly advanced and add value to the game.

So how do the Bears stack up?

The Bears are without question the most advanced bid of the contenders – 3,300 financial members with no team to support is an incredibly powerful statement.

In a recent meeting, the NRL expressed their delight at the bid’s progress. The bid team has targeted 5,000 financial memberships by 31 March 2011 – an incredibly high target, but one that looks possible with the ever-increasing momentum the bid is generating.

The WA Reds have just commenced a financial membership drive with a target of 3,000 by end of 2010. CQ are not attempting to attract financial memberships while the Western Jets bid is still being crafted, hence there model is unknown, but financial memberships are currently on zero.

In terms of Facebook fan sites, the Bears are about level with the Newcastle Knights at over 20,700 fans. These numbers compare favourably with Cronulla Sharks (14,500), Penrith Panthers (13,130) and Canberra (8,220). Central Queensland’s bid has 8,240 fans, WA Red’s 700 and the Ipswich Jets have 47.

Innovative ‘Bears @ Work’ corporate drives have reaped an outstanding array of diverse sponsors – finance for this bid is not in question.

An innovative private capital raising model will allow fans to buy shares in the Bears – the first community owned team of its kind in Australia. Combined with merchandise and membership sales, the Bears are budgeting for an excess floating capital reserve of approximately $5 million – the envy of all NRL teams with the exception perhaps only of the Broncos.

The success of the bid can be put down to a grassroots campaign in effect on the Central Coast over the past 5 years which has been ramped up over the past 12 months. Participation at untold community events, shopping centres, fundraisers, charity and school support have proved to the Coast that the Bears are committed to the community and here to stay forever. The majority of members are now Coasties, and by March will comprise around 2/3 Central Coast, 1/3 northern Sydney.

This mix is crucial – it goes to the heart of the Bears’ strategic appeal for the NRL/ARL. David Gallop has expressed his desire for this bid to prove by financial memberships that both Central Coast and northern Sydney will support the Bears, which would allow the NRL/ARL to reconnect with northern Sydney at the same time giving a heartland area a team it desperately needs.

The 2010 success of St-George-Illawarra, the closest geographic model to the Bears’ bid is very timely.

The NRL/ARL, like any army at war, attempts to build fortresses in heartlands to prevent incursions by the enemy. With the heartlands secure, the army can go on the offence, and secure new territories. These new territories are obviously Perth in the short term and perhaps another NZ team in due course.

The only heartland area in Australia requiring a fortress is northern Sydney, with the new Western Sydney AFL franchise on the doorstep in the Hills district of
North Sydney’s junior league district.

Add to that the threats from strong private school support for Rugby and traditional soccer support.

So not only do the Bears have a bid that’s the most advanced and muti-faceted ever to be submitted, there’s an urgency to reestablish support among the 750,000 people on the northside of Sydney disenfranchised when North Sydney were lost to the competition.

Admitting the Bears will indeed expand the game into a wealthy demographic, which is why sponsors are so eager to jump on board this model.

Key selling points for the Bears, of course, are the propaganda triumph for the game in re-establishing a Foundation Club, thus healing the wounds of the Super League War (particularly in combined with a return of another victim, the WA Reds).

Add to this the huge tribal rivalries that can be promoted between the Central Coast Bears and Newcastle and Manly (plus other Foundation rivalries with Roosters, Rabbitohs and Wests Tigers) – clashes that will benefit all clubs enormously in stimulating interest/pride in the local community and hence merchandise/member/attendance revenues.

The final point of course is the Club’s access to perhaps the two most attractive grounds to watch rectangular sport at in Australia – Bluetongue Stadium and North Sydney Oval.

Perhaps the final and most significant advantage for the Bears is that they were the second most watched team on free-to-air TV in the 1990′s – of massive importance that can be used to leverage for an increased TV deal, particularly if the NRL/ARL (as appears likely) choose to add WA Reds as a higher risk play to offset a sure winner in the Bears.

Two teams equals one more free-to-air game, possibly on Saturday night.
Hopefully within ten years all four regions will have teams. All hopes now rest on the NRL/ARL’s ability to secure an enhanced TV rights deal.

Hi guys,

Picked up a flyer at Chatswood station yesterday. I've stuck it on one of the walls at work. Dunno if you'll get anyone sign up as a result but at least it's out there :)

Nice flyers btw

All this self promotion might just work.

There is a desperate need for another team in QLD but they don't seem to be ready. I would agree CC Bears are ready now. I guess it will be up to the IC to decide where the expansion teams go.

SPORTING stars traded their usual headwear for bandannas last week to help sick children.

Mariners Jess Van Strattan and Brad Porter teamed up with former NSW State of Origin, Australian Kangaroos player and Central Coast Bears chief executive officer Greg Florimo at Erina Fair last Thursday and Friday, with the sporting trio greeting fans and doing their bit to raise much-needed funds for CanTeen.

National Bandanna Day is the biggest annual fundraiser for CanTeen, the Australian organisation for young people living with cancer.

All funds from the sale of bandannas and merchandise go to CanTeen’s camps and programs, aimed at empowering young people living with cancer by encouraging them to get involved, share their stories, make friends and have fun.

CanTeen Hunter and Northern NSW division manager Simon Cavaliere said once again the response from coast residents had been great.

“Residents have got behind CanTeen and shown their support which is great,” Mr Cavaliere.

The sportsmen were joined by youngsters who had used the CanTeen service “making it a great two days”, Mr Cavaliere said.

Promotion from the fans and members not from the CCBears themselves. Just shows the passion some of us have for the Bears and the lengths we'll go to having our team up and running on the CC.

Supporters given chance to buy into Central Coast Bears
Adrian Proszenko November 14, 2010

THE Central Coast Bears are yours to own. Club officials have given rugby league fans the opportunity to buy a piece of the franchise through a public share offering.

An expression of interest letter - obtained by The Sun-Herald - has been sent to Central Coast and North Sydney Bears members last month in an attempt to raise $6 million to $8 million from investors.

Should the NRL - or an independent commission - ultimately reject the Bears' bid for inclusion in the competition, the money will be returned to investors.

''Our financial modelling suggests we need to raise a considerable cash fund to underwrite our bid,'' the letter states. ''To meet these criteria, we plan to embark on an exciting program to involve the entire northern Sydney and Central Coast communities in a plan to finance our bid to bring back the Bears.

''This is the next key step in our plan. We wish to determine the extent of local financial interest in the project and report back to the NRL to confirm the necessary financial criteria can be achieved.''

Respondents were asked to fill out a brief survey, including whether fans would be prepared to watch games at Bluetongue Stadium at Gosford and if they would consider investing in the franchise.

Bears chief executive officer Greg Florimo said that a formal document to interested parties would be sent out early in the new year.

''The response has been outstanding,'' he said.
''We've had between 12 to 15 per cent of them come back and there is a generous level of indication of financial support.

''This is a unique opportunity in rugby league and demonstrates, that you're not dependent on the leagues club or an independent owner to cover the costs every year.

''The shares will also be transferable and tradeable.
''We've done this with the blessing of the NRL. Our last meeting three weeks ago was very positive.''

The Bears have engaged Coffey Commercial Advisory to prepare an official bid document, which will be handed to the NRL in March. There have also been high-level negotiations with potential owners.

''There is significant interest in the franchise from a number of levels,'' Florimo said. ''I'd like to think that our final model will be made up of community investment as well as private ownership.''

The Bears, trying to become the competition's 17th franchise by 2013, hope that an independent commission will look favourably at expansion when it is finally established, which could be as soon as next month.

Central Coast Bears get behind 1000 jobs drive
LOCAL NEWS
16 NOV 10 @ 08:13AM BY STAFF WRITER

MAX Employment ambassador Steve Mortimer with Greg Florimo
THE Central Coast Bears don’t just want to bring an NRL team to the area - they also want to help create jobs.

They have begun a joint initiative with the job placement agency MAX Employment to try to place 1000 Central Coast job seekers in work before Christmas. They hope the enthusiasm of the Central Coast Bears and their fans and the expertise of the employment agency will do the trick.

“As corporate citizens and part of the community fabric, we want to help drive up job opportunities,” Bears chief executive officer Greg Florimo said.

“We believe we can get 1000 new jobs by Christmas and we’re appealing for organisations to pledge jobs through our website.”

MAX Employment business manager for Gosford Mick Kirwan said he was pleased to have the spotlight on unemployment issues and welcomed the support of the Bears.

“We place people into work daily, but there’s always room for more job vacancies to come through,” he said.

“The Bears have a strong profile in the community and a great network of employer contacts.

“We hope their relationships will shine in this campaign and employers will come forward pledging their vacancies.”

Already five jobs have been pledged by Advantage Recruitment and branch manager Brad Peyser welcomed the challenge of bettering this pledge.

Pledges can be made through either the MAX Employment or Central Coast Bears website, or drop into a MAX Employment office.

Inquiries: 4349 9900.
