Its getting really messy now:

KevinDing KEVIN DING
NBA source says trade was NOT discussed at NBA owners meeting, says other owners did NOT kill the deal, but league office did.

@daldridgetnt: League spokesman: "Not true that owners killed the deal...League office declined to make the trade for basketball reasons."

mccannsportslaw: Stern has legal authority to block trades for best interests of game (per league constitution, which every NBA franchise assents to)

ESPNSteinLine Marc Stein
Our own @Chris_Broussard on SportsCenter: Chris Paul fuming and exploring legal options w/NBPA director Billy Hunter to fight blocked deal

So now we find out that the owners didn't veto it for financial reasons, but rather Stern did it for "basketball reasons"

To me that makes it much worse. At least I could understand the financial side from the owners perspective.

Wtf is basketball reasons lol this is one HUGE mess, Paul is looking to take action and wont show up to training camp and you know the Lakers are going to have a response, if this trade was with the Clippers or Warriors would basketball reasons still exist, just a comical situation.

My man Reggie Miller "where we're they when Lakers stole Pau"

I know that benefited the my Lakers but thats a good point, this is a dangerous precedent to set and this is only the beginning. You know the Lakers are going to come out firing.

If the owners had vetoed it for financial reasons, then I would have said no to the precedent issue, since the case of the league owning a team is incredibly rare. And after how this thing has blown up, I'm not sure if the league will want to go down that path again.

But if it's true that Stern vetoed it because he didn't like Paul being able to dictate where he wanted to go, then It's incredible shady. Where was he for the Melo trade?

The Pau deal got the lakers back on the map. That's why it was allowed. A Lakers that matter is good for the league. A lakers creating a new era of dominaiton is not.

Don't feed on the NBAs rhetoric. They are trying to kill the "owners did this" angle to reduce any conflict of interest if Paul does pursue legal options.

Also if he's worried about big 3 teams he's basically made it easy for NYC to pick him up in FA. There's no way they could trade for him so Stern has just made this whole situation f**ked up.

Lakers getting CP3 was at the expense of two star players and even though Pau isn't a franchise player he is still all star quality this move is boggling.

The NO fans have been robbed too and I feel for them as a Pacers fan, the chance to replace a star player with equal quality and probably with the better deal just doesn't happen for small market teams

Legal action? There's nothing wrong with the trade at all

A commisoner is legally entitled to block deals in the best interest of the league. Established precedent from 1976 MLB case.

Other owners are not allowed to kill a deal in blatant conflict of interest.

The NBA is obviously saying it was the former, common sense and recent history tells you it was the latter.

That's actually a good point.

“I guess that means I’m a Laker if the trade didn’t go through,” a somber Odom said in a phone interview with The Times. “I don’t know what to do for the Lakers. I’m even weirded out by the league doing what they did. I don’t know what to do.”
Odom said he thought it was “a lie” when he was first told about the trade to New Orleans.
“And then it doesn’t go through,” Odom said. “Oh, lord. I don’t know what I’m going to do. I’ll pray about it.”
The Lakers open training camp Friday at their facility in El Segundo.
“Maybe I’ll see you there tomorrow [at practice],” Odom said. “But I doubt it. You don’t want to go to no place you’re not wanted. I’ll try to give them what they want as much as possible.”
