Coach Power Rankings preseason 2019

Fair points. Rankings like this will always be very debatable. If you'd asked me 2 years ago I'd have Des as a top 4 coach.

More than simply missing the finals, the way he has trashed the Dogs roster for what could still be years has soured my opinion on him. Furthermore, he isn't missing the finals with a poor roster that he inherited, he was heading down the ladder year on year with a team that he built from scratch, which was in a Grand Final not very long ago. Every recruitment decision and every football decision he has made since 2014 has resulted in dropping a few ladder spots. This looks to me like a coach that has lost his touch. There's every chance he can turn it around at Manly but right now, his stocks are low.

Sticky is always controversial. I think middling is a pretty fair assessment. He's got the Raiders into a competitive outfit which is an improvement on where they were under Furner's long reign.

The main difference between Des and Sticky is that Sticky is heading in the right direction (albeit slowly) while Des has been heading in the wrong direction since Grand Final day 2014.
Exactly my thoughts, gone backwards and destroyed a club recruitment wise.

FWIW, i dont understand how anyone can think Stuart has been an improvement on Furner, or that he has them headed in the right direction.

Now we could have a great year in 2019, i dont know... but right now

David Furner and Ricky Stuart have both essentially had 5 years in the job.
Stuart - 123 games, 57-65-1 46.3%
Furner -121 games, 53-68-0 43.8%

Furner made the top 8 twice in that period, Stuart has made it once.
Stuart's squad has undoubtedly been more talented in the 1-6-7-9 spots.

Furner's entire coaching career was basically revolving door at fullback, Campese on and off at 5/8th pending his knees, McCrone at halfback and Glenn f**king Buttriss at hooker

Stuart has had Blake Austin, Aiden Sezer in the halves most of his time, and what ever you think of those players, it's undeniable they're far better than a broken Terry Campese (or his which ever jabroni we had replace him, usually Sam Williams) and Josh McCrone. He's had Hodgson who's probably the 2nd, 3rd at absolute worst best hooker in the game, and Jack Wighton.

We're not competitive, we're a shitty football team with some very talented players who can beat up badly on teams of our quality or worse, and generally get handled with ease by any team that is good and plays a solid 80 minutes.

What part of that looks like we're headed in the right direction?

That said... i'll say it again
Current Power Rankings:
Ricky Stuart is top 2, and he ain't 2.

2016 you were a bees dick from a Grand Final and while 2017 and 18 were disappointments they had some very notable injury disasters which might have been the difference between finals and not.
Overly generous? Maybe.

Des being debatable, could you rank any of the other coaches 10-16 above Ricky? I cant (sadly)

In the last dozen years, Hasler has coached teams to 5 grand finals and 2 premierships. With 10 consecutive finals appearances.

So, missing the finals twice makes him a worse coach than Sticky?

Over the last dozen years he's been fantastic, sure.

But these are power rankings, which the general idea is current/recent form. Hasler's most recent coaching seasons were fairly dire.

Balancing recent seasons V all time is tricky and it's gonna change depending on who writes the list. In the end it's pretty subjective, no matter how much methodology you try to put behind it you're still gonna have to break ties based on not much more than feeling.

Mine can be split into pretty obvious categories

1-3
coaches who have won multiple premierships and are still successful

4-5
coaches with a fairly recent first premiership

6-7
up and comers who look primed to deliver

8-9
coaches who have won premiership(s) but don't look like winning another soon

10 down
never won anything, don't look like winning anything soon

Look, they're your power rankings, you can put him where you like... I've told you where Stuart is on mine, and i stand by it. But i admittedly might be in the grips of a Stockholm Sydnrome situation. Either way, nothing by respect for my president. (He makes me call him President)

But i were a free man, i'd probably think strongly about ranking like... everyone not named Brad Arthur ahead of him. If you're talking pelts on wall, none of those guys below him... Brown, McGregor, Kearney , Pay... i mean they all suck, and suck pretty badly... but again, if i were a free man and trying to make a case, i'd argue strongly that as far as sucking goes, no one on that list has the Sucking Pelts on the wall quite like the game's best thinker. We'll likely never get the chance to know if any of those guys could suck the life out of 3 different franchises. They'll mercifully never get that chance.

But the sweet taste of freedom left me many years ago.
Ricky stuart, top 2.

Let's compare the pair.

Rookies are players who either debuted or had played limited games (3) before their respective coaches came into their careers. Let's say stars are players who either represented a Tier 1 Nation or played Origin.

Bellamy (2003-2008)
Cameron Smith
Ryan Hoffman
Dallas Johnson
Antonio Kaufusi
Matt King
Billy Slater
Jake Webster
Steve Turner
Jeremy Smith
Cooper Cronk
Greg Inglis
Brett White
Adam Blair
Jeff Lima
Israel Folau
Sika Manu

Robinson (2013-18)
Daniel Tupou
Isaac Liu
Dylan Napa
Sio Siua Taukeiaho
Joseph Manu
Latrell Mitchell

Even if we include Tuivasa-Sheck who'd only played six games prior, it doesn't measure up to what Bellamy was able to achieve.

Good info and I stand corrected.

I do challenge the value of turning rookies in to rep players as a metric for this unless the coach recruited them which doesn't really happen in this day and age. Bellamy started the same year as Smith, Slater and Cronk and I can't imagine they wouldn't have been stars wherever and whomever they landed under. Same with Folau and GI. A lot of the other names under Bellamy are more impressive because some of them went elsewhere and never played rep footy again.

Worth noting also that Robbo still has a chance to add to that list from his first 6 seasons with the likes of Radley, Matterson, O'Sullivan, Momorovski etc. although not sure if you included in Bellamy's list players who debuted under him in that period and later went on to rep duties?

Anyways, as I said, if you look at the period both have been around (2013 onwards), I give Robbo a slight edge but I still have Bellamy on top because of longevity

Let’s see how robo backs 2018 up
Bellamy has proved himself many times
3 gfs in a row.
Did it last year with a couple of halves that didn’t have a heap of experience ...or pretty much none at NRL level.

Good point

He did back up his last premiership with a minor premiership which has technically not been done by anyone else in the NRL era given the 2008 minor premiership was stripped off melbourne.
