I would not take any of those players mentioned by McKinnon ahead of Saints current players. Maybe Dane Laurie. I can see him being a Flanno type signing to be used like Ben Barba was at the Sharks during his time there. Unless he can make Sloan into a Ben Barba. He has the ability to do so.

OPINION
Everyone thinks the Dragons No. 1 priority is to keep Ben Hunt - but I say it’s time to part ways with the champion playmaker.
There are a lot of quality players on the market FOR 2024 and the Dragons already have money to spend, they’ll have even more if they move on Hunt.
Hunt is a great player but they haven’t won with him and St George Illawarra shouldn’t be looking for short-term success, they need a full rebuild under a veteran coach.
They need an experienced coach to come in and build the club around their young talent in Junior Amone, Jayden Sullivan and Tyrell Sloan.

Then they can use Hunt’s salary to add several quality players to their roster, guys like Jake Averillo, Luke Brooks, Tommy Talau, Dane Laurie, Brian Kelly, Adam Pompey, Tesi Niu and Waqa Blake are all available.

I know Ben Hunt and respect him and if he wants to stay, he stays. But if he wants to go try and win a premiership, which he deserves, then let him and say good luck.

The Dragons are copping it left, right and centre at the moment but they’re actually in a sweet spot right now because they have their pick of the available coaches.

But wait much longer and there could be two more clubs looking for coaches in the next month and the Dragons will find themselves in a bidding war.
It’s why they must sign their next coach as soon as possible and I’ve said it all along that Shane Flanagan is the man for the job.

When you appoint a coach, the second-most important thing is his staff and right now they’d have the pick of the best available assistants.

If you look at the clubs that have taken the biggest leaps in recent years, like the Broncos, their coach has been very well resourced.

Kevin Walters was able to build a support team he’s satisfied with and hire people with the experience to build a winning foundation.

PERSONALLY I WHOLE HEARTEDLY AGREE
Ditto word for word, except the reference to Ben Hunt as a champion play maker.

I thought breaching his ban was a lot worse.

Means he can’t be trusted.

I understand the NRL don’t think much of him.

And he should apply like everyone. He’s got the Ryles disease of grandeur.

I’m willing to forgive, but not being humble and grateful is rubbish.

The club must have its standards.
After Debellin, Packer, Amone, Norman and a board willing to sign Folou & Hayne , why would we f**k up getting by far the best coaching candidate by applying these “ standards “ now ? Flanagan has done his time & paid for his mistakes so not willing to appoint someone who has a vision in moving forward and looking for a second chance ?

For f**k sake...this soap opera of selecting a new coach has dragged on for several months putting the club, players and fans through the wringer in the media. For goodness sake just get the deal done today and we can all get on with our lives!! Every one from the cleaning lady to the Prince Harry have been touted in the media as a potential coach...get me out of this misery...
I’d be prepared to wait a couple more weeks for Flanagans announcement than to find out they have given it to Young today !

.. then the entire Board should also be binned. The uproar by fans then will make the Oust Doust protest seem like a mild squabble.

I think it depends.

I’m still a Des man all the way. If it’s not Des, I will accept another coach on 2 years, 3 with club option.

I welcome enquiries from current NRL coaches, any assistants and anyone in recruiting.

As it’s been dragging on and the interest is enormous all over the game, I can see a money making opportunity for the club with a big coach revelation event.

Dane Laurie is problematic.

Good point about the tolerance for naughty players, but Flanno has less excuses. Not shutting the door but caution is reasonable.

If everyone cheated, the game could not function properly and his Mary babysitting role didn’t change much.

I say no to Young at the moment.

Cut us to shreds in a Ressies game recently. Perhaps at 14. Jake Averillo cut us to sheds in Firsts too. Got some after burners. Luke Brooks ball skills and defense stats are moderate. Know nothing about Tommy Talau, Brian Kelly, Adam Pompey, Tesi Niu and Waqa Blake.

New Coach will have some kind of recruitment plan.

As we know, there’s a wish list of available players to strengthen the squad and suddenly new meat turns up. Lots of headaches for the accountants as the goalposts keep changing.

Then marquee lose their gloss and youngsters excel.

I can’t get over Alex describing Brooks as a good player. He’s had less than a handful of good games in 3 years. $1.1m this year for factory.

Hunt is like Clive Churchill to us basket of deplorables and seemingly expendable fans being tortured at Wests.

We’d take him in a split second. Given the overs we need to pay, I think he command $1.3 easily. That would be our starting bid. He can drag us up from there.

You may find Alex McKinnon's opinions about the Dragon's coaching, recruitment and retention in the first part of this article of some interest -

Thanks CA, it crept on here a bit earlier today. But it’s very nice of you to consider this thread and us desperados.

Standing in the wind and rain, huddling together for warmth, waiting for an announcement.

I’m sure the BOD are not in too much of a hurry as they’ll want to get a free jaunt over to Buenos Aires to speak to Cheika, before they knock him back.
I hear the Steaks & Beer are tops over there & better than Crownies.

Tommy Talau good young player, going to Manly though I believe. Brian Kelly decent player, but centre should be no where near our first priority. In fact, it's probably last. Pompey, Niu and Blake? Not good, just not good

Hunt has had six years with us and won us nothing, have we even made the finals during his tenure. If anyone was paid overs it is Ben Hunt.

We all see the world differently.

If they erected a statue of Brooks, the facial expression used would be his grimace of watching his kick go over dead ball line.

Brooksy and finals?!

If New Coach wants him, he’s unsigned.
