Combined Brothers bid

Irish catholic brothers? In catholicism there are priests and under them "brothers" that seem to just linger around boys locker rooms. I'm half joking, that is seriously my experience at catholic school there are "brothers" which are old grey dudes that just hang around the dormitories. I don't know what they actually do apart from that...

Anyway, lets steer away from that conversation, they'd definitely get support in brisbane, maybe not from the actual rivals of brothers but thats litterally a few hundred people.

Any Brisbanites tell us if they would be accepted by followers of other Brisbane clubs?

Can anyone explain why the leprechaun, what's the link with Ireland?

I think some would, some wouldn't - depends if their allegiances lie with a specific club or the old BRL as a whole (and cannot support the Broncos)

As for the leprechaun, that would be due to the catholic connections the club has/had with the church and the Christian Brothers. The original Brothers RU club was formed for old boys of Terrace, Nudgee and one other school, and - having a shot in the dark - the colours are Terrace's old colours from way back when.

There's some good history on the club on the Brothers RU page: http://www.brothersrugby.com/about.asp#ClubHistory, scroll down to the "The QRU Management Committee had suspended Senior Grade football from 1916-18" bit for where they start to talk about the rugby league club

I think it is a fascinating Bid - it could certainly tick some boxes that others could not. (community connection/juniors/broad support) my primary concern would be the fact that it presently has little specific geographic home. I love the fact they are talking about playing games in numerous cities, would have a deep history. It is the only bid so far that entirely sets itself as opposed to the Broncos style brand and corporate vibe.

The problem with the geographic centre however could be solved fairly easily by centering more west (in the corridor) rather than at the grange.

As a North Sydney supporter I want to see the CC Bears admitted. However, I will greatly enjoy seeing the Brothers bid accepted. Hoping the NRL admits the Bears and Brothers first then a WA team and/or another QLD, NZ or PNG into the comp later on.

Well just as I've said about the Bears bid, it's an advantage to have a new club that's got an existing fan base. The growth is in the South/West but needless to say that a new club should be aiming to draw supporters from all over Brisbane/Queensland.

If they can get the majority of the pro-QRL and/or anti-corporate-Broncos supporters on their side then they could be the right team to build that rivalry. The aim should be to create another Queensland club based at Suncorp with a supporter base to match the Broncos.

Yeah , interesting bid.

I really like the Brisbane base with connections to other parts of the state.

9 Brisbane home games the rest spread out the state would be really cool.

Collegians in Wollongong also grew from the Christian Brothers, they were originally called CBC I think. So, there may perhaps be some affinity there as well.

As an old CB High School boy of Irish heritage, I'd be fairly likely to take them on as a 2nd team. Ie cheer for them against everyone except my Saints.

Wonder what colours they would use? There is already a lot of blue and white in the NRL. Green, navy and white maybe?

Brothers' NRL bid hits hurdle
THE Brothers' bid to be reborn as an NRL club has hit a first hurdle, with their Ipswich chapter declaring allegiance to a rival consortium.
The Ipswich Brothers Leagues Club is a profitable operation with junior and senior teams.
It would be a key plank in the dream of Brothers' bid manager Justin Barlow to establish the Leprechauns as an NRL franchise, following their Queensland Cup demise a decade ago.
However, Brothers Ipswich is already aligned to the Western Corridor's NRL bid team and the leagues club's general manager Mark Hennelly told The Courier-Mail that status would not change.
"We support the Western Corridor bid for NRL inclusion and while the Brothers proposal is exciting we will remain aligned with the Corridor,'' Hennelly said.
"The reason we joined forces with the Corridor was to help our kids have a pathway to the NRL and nothing has changed that.

"I have seen the Brothers proposal and I wish them well. I'm not criticising their plans but we are supporting the Corridor.''

I was speaking to friend who played for Logan Brothers when he was a kid and he was a supporter of their BRL team back in the day.

He is one of those guys that has teams he likes and teams he doesn't like but he doesn't really support anybody and he is already saying that if the Brothers do get an NRL license he will become a member and I quote "I'll be considering moving back to Brissie so I can go to all of our games, if we get a license", which seems a bit crazy to me considering that his got things so good down here.

Funnily enough, he isn't worried about whether their bid will be successful or not as much as he is about them not wearing their traditional blue and white if they do get in, he reckons that they will have to go with green and orange (or something like that) because they will look to much like the Bulldogs otherwise.

So yeah, the Brothers already have a base of hardcore supporters to follow them.

Hi everyone, this is a must read for everyone! Justin Barlow has answered some questions that you have sent to us. Thanks to everyone who sent in a question and if you think of others that weren't addressed here don't hesitate to ask.

What will the jersey designs and Leprechaun look like?

The jerseys will be very traditional. There will be a home, away and clash jersey which most likely will be the butcher stripes, the jersey similar to the 87 style and a style similar to the State League jumper.
The jersey is our most important piece of IP and symbol of who we are. It is the pinnacle of what a football side is as it is the end result, the item that defines who you are once you are on the field. It is what connects us all and connects us to our history.
The Leprechaun logo is something that should be decided by our members. There will be a vote/poll to decide if we go with the 87, “running” Leprechaun or the traditional style “sleeves up” logo.

How will Brothers engage people in regional areas who don't play for them?

This is an excellent question and vital to the process. It is important to recognise that this proposal is not just about Brothers but Brothers being the most suitable vehicle to deliver as much elite Rugby League to as many regional areas as possible due to the vast, in place network. Each of the other bidding teams are focused on delivering an outcome for a specific region or city, this will of course come at the expense of other areas and communities. Should Brothers be successful, we can deliver games, training camps, community programs and coaching clinics to many areas which can be implemented by our vast regional network for the benefit of all Rugby League fans.
We are very aware that we need to contribute to everyone in regional areas and not keep our programs and contributions exclusive to Brothers stakeholders.

Which regional cities will you take games to?

We will look to take between 2-4 games per year to regional centres. We will look to have the games in areas where there is a Brothers team present, the infrastructure is approved and up to NRL standards and the local council is engaged and willing to support. We will also look to take trials to many areas as well.
While many NRL teams currently sell games off to regions, many of them are only present for a short period around game day. Through our Brothers base in these areas, we can provide longer term content for longer periods by utilising the regional clubs to assist in delivering on the ground support.
This strategy will also provide long term economic impact and job creation for several regions as opposed to one specific area. By doing this it will provide a strong case to lobby local councils and state governments to invest in upgrading fields and training facility’s, maintenance and employment training as opposed to building one stadium to service one area. That sort of money can be shared amongst several smaller upgrades amongst several cities.

What benefits will it bring to country/regional football?

More Rugby League content, more often, across multiple regions. Improved facilities and improved chances for exposure to elite opportunities.
As it is vital that the bid and ultimately the Brothers NRL team will need to be connected to all regional communities with open and often lines of communications and regular visits, the opportunity to identify and nurture talent will naturally progress. This talent, although may be invited into the Brothers NRL system, will not be encouraged into a Brothers regional system. The ultimate way to improve our own club is to ensure the integrity and standard of the competitions are as high as possible and the talent is at all times spread as even as possible. Like all areas of Rugby League, a one game philosophy must be maintained. We must always ensure we do what is best for the game before we do what is best for our team.

Brothers have clubs in Ipswich and Toowoomba. Why not base the team there?

We will look to have a very meaningful presence in the Western regions of SEQ and ensure that we can deliver a connection to the region, but without a stadium present in these areas, it makes more operational sense to be as close to your main playing ground (Suncorp Stadium) as possible. Having training fields and administration facilities in an area and playing nearly an hour away does not make viable sense. We will ensure that our presence in these regions is frequent and genuine across both football and community. Through an in place relationship, we will look to deliver an outcome focused Indigenous program with the native title holders of an area of the Western Downs, The Iman People.
It is our understanding that Ipswich Brothers are currently supporting the Western Corridor bid. We respect their decision and doing what they believe is best for their fans and players. We will look to develop a relationship with them and would love for them to align with Brothers NRL.

How will the bid/team be financed? Who will run the club?

The bid process has currently been funded personally while we build the assets and start putting a support team in place. As we progress, the bid team will be funded according to workload required through sponsorship, memberships, merchandise, events and coterie groups. As we progress through to an NRL organisation we will be entitled to grants, greater sponsorship investment and further opportunity due to increased exposure.
We are currently finalising our corporate structure and governance model which will dictate the final ownership structure of the club. The desired structure is one that does not prosper any individual. A Not for Profit where by any profitable revenues are invested back into the organisation or into grass roots endeavours is favoured or a member owned model, similar to that of the Green Bay Packers, is also a preferred outcome.
Once this structure is finalised, the bid will be run by an independent working committee made up of local business identities that are best qualified and experienced in their respective fields. There will also be a representative of the Confraternity. Once the NRL organisation is running, an NRL approved, member elect board will be put in place to guide an experienced CEO and his team.

Brothers have had financial problems historically. How will it be different this time?

The current group driving the bid were in no way affiliated with the previous operations of Brothers. There can be no guarantees in today’s business climate however, the shared commercial experience and respect for the Brothers band the working group have will determine that a viable business plan will be implemented.

Thank you for these questions and the opportunity to address your concerns. It is so comforting to see that so many people genuinely care about how this bold venture will take shape.

I look forward to hearing more thoughts and feedback as often as possible.

We Can Do This!

This is the best bid for SEQ, no question.

I liked Western Corridor, but it is clearly far too narrow in comparison to this.

The Brothers will be an epic success I have no doubt.

Certainly looking good, the big question remains financial viability but they certainly seem to have a plan.

I was for the WC bid as well, but if this bid has the finances it'll be a great club to be part of. I wonder if WC and Brothers can talk and find common ground?

If the Brothers bid starts to generate real strength as I suspect it will, the Ipswich Brothers will be very compelled to switch allegiances.

When a defined pathway for their players and links with an NRL club are available, it will be very difficult to resist.

The bid team are right to play it cool and not pressure them. It reflects a confidence in themselves that they don't feel the need to.

With the drawing power this bid will have, in being able to generate fans across the state, I can't see how any of the other bids could possibly compare. Potential sponsors will not ignore this and nor do I think will the NRL.

How would the rivalry against the Broncos rate? Would it be a ready made hate fuelled derby or more like that they have with the titans?
