Richie Williams sacked,

Wayward Williams sacked
By Josh Massoud | May 10, 2008 12:00am

Sacked ... less than a year after joining the Penrith Panthers, Richie Williams has been given his marching orders. / The Daily Telegraph
PENRITH have sacked outspoken star Richie Williams.
Less than a year after joining the Panthers from St George Illawarra, the enigmatic playmaker was told to pack his bags after a string of misdemeanors.

Williams was contracted to the Panthers until the end of this year, but officials lost patience after he failed to turn up to last weekend's clash against Parramatta.

The Narooma junior also missed a training session with the team's NSW Cup feeder side, the Windsor Wolves.

After a checkered debut season in 2007 - highlighted by a stunning verbal attack on Roosters pivot Braith Anasta - Williams has failed to play a single NRL game this year.

He has been stranded at fullback for Windsor, but showed his outspoken ways had not abated by being sin-binned for backchat three weeks running.

It is also understood Williams has been fined and warned several times for breaching club protocol - leaving Panthers CEO Mick Leary little option but to cut him loose this week.

Leary was unavailable for comment last night. Williams burst onto the scene with a two-try NRL debut for the Dragons last season.

But his infamous attack on Anasta just five games later put him on the outer at St George Illawarra, and eventually led to a mid-season release to Penrith.

Williams' sacking gives Penrith a little more spending money for 2009 recruits. The club is believed to be primarily interested in second rowers, with Nathan Smith (Canberra) and Tony Puletua (St Helens) both headed elsewhere.

Kiwi International Jeremy Smith, Roosters veteran Craig Fitzgibbon, Cowboys workhorse Steve Southern and Rabbitohs rookie Shannon MacPherson are all believed to be on the club's hitlist. Long-serving stars Luke Rooney and Luke Priddis are also certain to be released.

Dragons say hello Sailor

May 12, 2008 - 1:03PM

Dual international Wendell Sailor said a desire to go out on his own terms was his prime motivation after today signing with St George Illawarra until the end of the 2009 NRL season.

Sailor will make his return to rugby league in the relative obscurity of the Jim Beam Cup with the Shellharbour Marlins this weekend.

His two-year doping ban after testing positive to cocaine while playing rugby union for the NSW Waratahs expired at the weekend.

The former Brisbane, Queensland and Australian rugby league star said he wanted to repay the Dragons for giving him a second chance.

"I'd like to thank Browny (Dragons coach Nathan Brown) and obviously the Dragons for giving me the opportunity to come back and to put things right and to finish on my terms,'' Sailor said today.

"A lot of times in those two years you have regrets and you just want to move on ... there were some dark days there, days when I didn't think I could probably come back.''

He will return on the wing for the Marlins against Erina in Shellharbour on Saturday night but Sailor said he wouldn't put a time frame on his return to the top grade.

Having previously stated that he viewed Sailor as more of a backrower, Brown said he would initially return as a winger.

''(He'll) definitely start on the wing but who knows where we could venture to,'' Brown said.

"We have got a fair few outside backs at the club at the moment.''

Sailor played 185 first grade games for Brisbane before switching codes in 2001.

FINCH SIGNS NEW THREE YEAR DEAL
Monday 12 May 2008

Halfback Brett Finch has committed long term to the Pirtek Parramatta Eels, agreeing to a new three year deal at the weekend.

The new agreement means Finch, who at just 26 years of age will play his 200th First Grade game against Brisbane in round 12, will remain an Eel until at least the end of the 2011 season.

“It was always my intention to stay at Parramatta and I’m over the moon to have the deal squared away,” Finch said.

“I can’t speak highly enough of the players and coaching staff, I’ve really enjoyed my footy over the past 18 months under Michael Hagan and I’m looking forward to that continuing between now and 2011.

“The team has a lot of potential within and I’m confident things will only get better as the season wears on, I have no doubt we’re headed in the right direction.

“It’ll certainly be a great honour and privilege to play my 200th First Grade game wearing a Parramatta jersey and I’m very proud to have played so many matches at the highest level.”

Head Coach Michael Hagan said re-signing Finch was a priority for the team and for the club.

“It’s an important retention, the stability and enthusiasm that Brett brings to the team is really important both on and off the field,” Eels head coach Michael Hagan said.

“I think he’s shown more consistency and understanding of the game this year than he has in his whole career, he’s been instrumental in keeping us in games and helping us to win games this season.

“His temperament and confidence is a real plus for him at the moment and I look forward to him playing as vital a role both for the remainder of this year and also in coming seasons.

“I’ve also got to give Brett’s manager Steve Gillis a wrap, the process was conducted swiftly and to the satisfaction of all parties.”

Eels CEO Denis Fitzgerald has echoed his head coach’s sentiments, hailing the halfback’s decision to stay put as a vital one for the team.

“I’m personally very pleased that Brett has decided to commit to the Eels for the next three seasons,” Parramatta Eels CEO Denis Fitzgerald said.

“He’s in career best form and provides excellent stability and direction for the team around the park.

“He is also the kind of player you like to have around. He is a leader of men both on and off the field and is an enormously popular figure around the club.”

Bailey confident, Laffranchi re-signs

May 12, 2008
GOLD Coast co-captain Luke Bailey is expecting to make his return from a broken wrist in Friday's NRL clash with the Bulldogs at Skilled Park.
Bailey says he'll undergo X-rays before hopefully being cleared to play for the Titans, who are likely to lose Scott Prince and Anthony Laffranchi to State of Origin camp.

The Titans have also announced Laffranchi has re-signed with the club for another three years.

RIDDELL TO LINK WITH WIGAN IN 2009
12.16pm, Wednesday 14 May 2008

The Pirtek Parramatta Eels and Mark Riddell have by mutual consent agreed to release the hooker from the remaining year of his National Rugby League playing contract.

The agreement allows Riddell to take up an offer to join English Super League powerhouse Wigan following the conclusion of the 2008 NRL season.
“Mark has been a great character on and off the field since joining the Parramatta Eels in 2005 and he will be a tremendous asset for Wigan both in terms of playing strength and in his ability to promote the club and the English game,” Parramatta CEO Denis Fitzgerald said.
“While we’re sorry to see him go we acknowledge opportunities such as the one presented by Wigan don’t come along every day, and as such we have agreed to a release from the 2009 portion of his contract.
“We wish Mark all the best and we can assure Wigan Warriors fans that they are getting a player who will give his all, every game.
“We also look forward to Mark having an impact for the Eels in the remainder of their 2008 campaign, and particularly his playing a role in the ongoing development of a talented and highly promising local junior in Matthew Keating.”
Wigan Chairman Ian Lenagan said the signing of Riddell is an important one both for now and the future of the club.
"We are delighted to have signed Mark on a three-year deal,” Mr. Lenagan said.
“He is exactly the type of hooker Wigan needs to lead our forwards and to further develop young Michael McIlorum. He adds strength and size, brings spark to our attack and is a hard working defender who plays considerable game time. His kicking from hand and goal kicking skills are an additional benefit.
“We are extremely grateful to the Parramatta Club who have agreed to release Mark one year early from his contract to take up this opportunity with Wigan. Mark is a great character on the field who will go down very well with the Wigan fans and is looking forward to testing himself in the English Super League."

BULLDOGS RE-SIGN WINITANA AND KITE
Thursday 15 May 2008 10:12
by (Press Release)

The Mitsubishi Electric Bulldogs have secured the future of two more emerging stars, extending the contracts of local juniors Tim Winitana and John Kite for the 2009 and 2010 seasons. The extraordinary injury toll facing the Bulldogs has also led to the signing of Joe Williams who will play VB Cup and provide back-up in the halves.

After an impressive pre-season 21 year old Winitana forced his way into the starting side where he has had a strong impact in the centres, including a Players Player performance in the Round 2 match against the Rabbitohs.

20 year-old Kite has worked his way through the Bulldogs development pathways, playing in junior representative teams and working as a Trainee last year. The big front rower is expected to move into the top 25 squad next season.

Having played nearly 50 first grade games Williams provides a solid alternative in the halves in the event of further injuries.

"These are all important signings for us, we're particularly pleased to be able to secure the services of local juniors in Tim Winitana and John Kite," said CEO Todd Greenberg.

"They are both very capable players with a great deal to offer the club and we expect them to play a key role in a bright future for the Bulldogs.

"Joe Williams knows the demands of first grade football and is an important acquisition for us given the uncanny number of injuries we've endured already this season."

HAHA nah mate..he got sacked.

I think that was a waste of talent...he'll probably go to Souths.

I don't think you will find him anywhere near Souths. He was asked to leave Souths when he was there previously and the reason why has been left between Souths and himself.
