NRL player manager Sam Ayoub says he wants to clear his name after being named in Ryan Tandy match-fixing verdict

PLAYER agent Sam Ayoub has expressed dismay at being implicated in today's judgement that found his client, Ryan Tandy, guilty of match-fixing.

In delivering her verdict against Tandy, magistrate Janet Wahlquist relied on a statement from former Eel Brad Murray, who claimed that Ayoub had encouraged him to bet on last year's Bulldogs-Cowboys match.

Wahlquist said the contents of Murray's statement pointed to evidence of "a guilty mind" on Tandy's behalf.

Ayoub will plead not guilty to the same charge Tandy faced - attempt to gain financial advantage through deception - at a hearing in the same court later this year.

Ayoub's solicitor, Chris Watson, attended Downing Centre Local Court this morning and told The Daily Telegraph he was surprised that his client was implicated prior to trial.

"Mr Ayoub has seen the judgment by the magistrate in the case brought by police against Ryan Tandy," Watson said.

"In her judgment the magistrate has made a number of comments about her view of Mr Ayoub's role.

"These comments have been made in a case in which Mr Ayoub was not a party, and was not represented.

"As Mr Ayoub's case will not be heard until later this year.

"He is looking forward to the opportunity then to clear his name."

"match fixing" is the end result of a match - this alleged incident in Bulldogs-Cowboys was "spot fixing" attempt.

How much debt must Ayoub be carrying to pull a stunt like this?

How dumb are these blokes? Did they think no one would notice?

How many times has this happened before?? It seems to business as usual for them.

+ Any number of other probes in to boxing, tennis and other sports

The whole ch9 advertising of sportstab during the game tops it off for me

This is going to become a serious blight on the game. It is time for the NRL to ACT NOW, distance itself from the proactive promotion of gambling and ensure integrity is maintained, before it is all pissed down the manhole

Cheers,

betting in rugby league and sport for that matter is too far gone, it's an industry which is way too big and actually pumps a lot of money back into the game via partnerships and sponsorships etc. It's an evil but a necessary one, many people don't realise how widespread this minor fixing is in the game and how long it has been happening....it's almost a tradition

If you want to watch bet free sports go watch your kid play rugby league on the weekend as that's most likely the only place it's not at all fixed in some way

with respect mate, fixing is fixing. i think that to call it 'minor' takes away from the impact it has on the integrity of the sport. i have no interest in watching a game where i know that any part of the game has been pre-decided, particularly based on a gambling outcome

won't happen. gamblings too entrenched in a lot of cultures, esepcially ours. the partnerships between betting agencies and the NRL and clubs (which i dont like) brings in a lot of revenue. I can udnerstand the nrl's position - sp[ortsbetting will ahppen whetehr we like it or not (unless the govt bans it which they wont) we might as well get something out of it.
